I am confused on how to go about upgrading my spells. I am only level 6, about to leave the IOR, but I don't want to make a =big misstep and not upgrade when I should.

Where do I get a higher level of a certain spell? From vendors or quests? Any help would be appreciated.

You start with App1 (apprentice 1). App2 can be purchased from vendors called scribes or trainers in your home city. App2, App3, and App4 upgrades are player made. Check out your town's broker to see if anyone is selling the upgrades you need, or you can even make your own if you're into tradeskills. The level above Apprentice is called Adept. Adept1 spells drop from creatures you kill; people tend to sell the ones they find but can't use themselves. Adept2 upgrades are supposed to be quested, but apparently aren't in the game yet. Adept3 spells are player made from rare harvested items, and usually sell for outrageous prices. I don't know about the 3rd level spells - called Master - since I've never seen one.

Note - you don't have to go in an even progression up the scale from App1 to App2 to etc. You can go right from App1 to Adept3 if you're lucky enough to find the upgrade.

You should craft your spells.

In fact it is so easy, that I made a App 3 Smite on the Isle of Refuge.

To get recipies for higher level spells, purchase the Artisan Essentials books from the Wholesaler merchant.

Keep in mind that the higher in level you go, you may need to select the appropriate tradeskill subclass to continue.

A lot of Scholars make App IVs, so go for those instead. On Antonia Bayle, they got for around 35-50sp for level 1-20 spells.

If you don't mind waiting, you can get Adept 1s for those levels at usually a lot less, 15sp is typical. I usually just buy App IVs and wait for someone to sell the Adept on /auc.

The recent patch should drop Adept IIIs in your spell level by quite a bit if what the devs are hinting at are right.
