I am a beginner at crafting. What happens when you lose durability? Can you get it back so an item can become pristine? I am currently working on a rawhide leather backpack and lost durability so it only made a 4-slot backpack vs a 6-slot backpack. Thanks for your assistance.

Until you get to level 10 you have no durability buffs. At 10 the one you get those are only for the specific path you choose. Outfitters get sewing, weapon, and armor buffs. Craftsman get food, woodworking, etc.

I suggest you only use the progress buffs that don't take durability away or a chance of success so that leaves the one that gives progress and costs power. At that level I just used it non-stop as power permitted and hoped for the best.

You can get durability back at higher levels of crafting but in my own experience its better never to lose it. At low levels your only hope is to get the item done as quick as possible because once durability goes down thats all she wrote.

So you're saying that once you lose the durability and the "unknown" line disappears...you can never get it back. I think I'm doomed then on making a pristine rawhide leather backpack. :(

At that level unless our an outfitter with sewing buffs it won't happen.

It may take 6 tries, but you will get a pristine item if your using your low level buffs correctly.

Also experement with every buff you have and write down results. Buffs always have the same effect when triggered.

Your default pulse is +50 Progress -10 Durability. This can be changed by buffs and critical success/failures on your skill check. This is a 5 to 1 ratio.

So trigger a single buff alone 4-5 times and write down the results.. If you get say +56 -11 a couple times, then that specific buff will give you +6 Progress -1 Durability. Even though this buff drops your durability by 1, you get 6 progress from it. This is more then a 5 to 1 ratio, so its better then just letting it plug along on its own. Note that some buffs lower your chance for success, these are "normaly" a good idea to use when your skill is high. The return you get tends to higher then any failures over the long run. But if you find a buff or buff combo that gives you a lot of failures, put it on hold for a couple levels. ;)

Once you get an idea of what your buffs do, its trial and error for which combos work best. I generaly suggest using all of your starting buffs on every pulse if your power does not drain to fast. Using all your low level buffs and having a decent skill level will result in pristine about 20% or higher of the time.

Note: Sub-componets do NOT have to be pristine and usinig pristine gives you no advantage. Only the TOP componet on your finnal combine must be pristine to try and get a Pristine finnal product. While you can make high quality sub-componets for exp, they do not effect your finnal result.

Note: You have a chance for a skill incresae on every buff, and on completion of the item. So you should be using your buffs as often as possible. At least 1 every pulse, if not 2 and 3. Also the chance for a skill increase seems to be tied to the con of the buff. A yellow buff may give you a skill increase every couple times you trigger it while a grey buff may only give you a skill increase every 100 uses. (random number).

What are the buffs? I didn't know there were any buffs. How do I get these buffs?

Press the EQII button then press your knowledge button. Click on the tab that says tradeskills. Your buffs are in there. Read each description and you will see what it does and to what skill it applies.

Everyone has the basic ones, they are in your book with spells and abilities, just split onto their own tab.

You get new buffs at tradeskill levels 10, 20 and I belive 30. Generaly your level 20 buffs replace your level 1, while your level 30's are an improved version of your level 10.

rest assured that if you don't cast a buff when an Event occurs, you will suffer either a HP, Power, Progress or Durability drain, depending on the severity of the event. So it is quite important to use the buffs at the right time too!

After you discover the buffs, put them in a new hotkey bar. Try to avoid using the one that lowers durability for progress unless that's what the specific event calls for.

Making backpacks isn't easy at your level (or mine): I just made six of them as a level 9 artisan, and made 5 normal and 1 pristine. If you didn't know already, your primary ingredient (in this case, rawhide plate) has to be pristine for you to even have a chance at a pristine rawhide backpack. Then you have to use those buffs you just learned about, and keep using them as often as possible, stopping only to regain power between items.

Anyway, even your crude bags are useful until you can replace them later. Throw them in your bank for some extra storage. Later you'll get some strong boxes, but anything helps, right?
