Assassin -- Shadowknight -- Defiler

Templar -- Gaurdian -- Wizard

I would say ,

Bruiser - Fury - Necro

Bruisers make decent tanks when buffed , furys can buff,de-buff ,heal , and necros add not only DPS but a 4th party member (his pet) who can either tank or be DPS (either the fallen hero or the grim spellbinder)
Just my 2cp

I am partial to:

ShadowKnight, Fury, Necro

Shadowknights can hold agro, they have damage wards and lifetaps, and have a pet for during combat.

Furies get nice buffs/debuffs as mentioned, and heal well.

Necros also as mentioned get pets and dots.

Figher/mage HOs are also very nice. You can get some AC/Stat buffs from some, and decent DD spells as well.

Figher/priest HOs offer group heals and AC/stat buffs and some DD spells.

hmm.. well at the core you want a priest class of some sort.. and a tank of some sort.. the third person should either be high DPS or crowd control... both would be good but it's hard to get both in a single character.

I would be tempted to toss necromancer or conjuror (good or evil) or a coercer into the mix instead of a straight wizard, their crowd control skills will not be used too often if you're lucky.. but the times you do need them you'll be grateful to have them.

conjuror or necro will bring another DD into the group with the summoned pet and an impressive one at that (once they have adept 1 or higher) also conjuror DOTs can do extreme amounts of DPS. The pets can tank fairly well and the conj. or priest-class can heal it.. which will take a little stress off of your true tank player.. If the pet looses hate, he can then taunt or whatever to take hate back..

Coercer will bring to the trio solid DPS (not quite as many dots as a conj. but they have a few) and a bit of nuking.. but they have obscene levels of crowd control.. allowing your trio to go after things you would otherwise be forced to leave alone... plus Coercer is not good / evil affiliated..

regardless, since you're purely a trio... you'll need versitility a lot more than a full party which can often outpower most encounters through sheer numbers.. so my vote would be...

basic formula.....

priest of some kind - tank of some kind - versitility of some kind..

i.e.
Templar - Guardian - Coercer or Conjuror

Inquisitor - Bruiser - Coercer or Necromancer

Shadowknight - Defiler - Coercer or Necromancer

Paladin - Fury - Coercer or Conjuror

etc.. etc...

i just started a trio last night with RL friends. we are heading down these paths. Berzerker, templar, swash buckler. we did from 3 to 8 int 2 and 1/2 hours, getting off the island and doing our citezenship quests, topped off with 3 armor quests. kicking butt the entire way, MOBS didnt even stand a chance, once engaged they had a 3 - 5 second life span and then it was on to the next one.

basicaly, i agree, you need a healer, a tank, and i would go DPS all the way, mobs drop fast everybody lives, and if you guys all are decent players even group pulls shouldnt be that much of a problem as long as its not more than 3 or 4.

Actually Coercer is evil, Illusionist is the good version. But yes they have great crowd control and some good DOTs.
