FFXI to EQ2Follow

How would you compare the two? I am mainly looking for if the gameplay is similar to each other? I played FFXI and loved it but felt it was very repetitive in certain areas, even with the enemies (Same crab look but at different areas). Does it have the same party system? How about crafting and advanced jobs? I have WoW and love it but it misses some of what FFXI offered.

I am just hearing so much negativity of forums about how it sucks but it got good reviews so it can’t be too bad? Can it?

There's a lot of ex-FFXI players in EQ2. I've read a lot of positive comments from them. They seem to find it more flexible, specially in terms of what equipment you *had to have* in FFXI, and the fact that all classes can solo in EQ2.

Hopefully someone will answer you more fully Smiley: smile

look at some of the older posts, where people go VERY indepth on the differences. I came from playing FFXI since its launch, and im loving EQ2. Theres so much more to EQ2 than FFXI.... soloing(yes, its possible!), racial flexiblity in jobs, SUPER in depth and fun crafting, NO DOWN LEVELING!, actual perks for completing quests (armor, money, exp), a stable economy, and massive nonlinear zones(unlike Kazaam, which reminded of levels from Crash Bandicoot! >_<). The change will be refreshing... that is, unless you play WoW, which i havent touched. Ive heard WoW is a departure from FFXI in that it is a very fast paced game, therefor leading to little lasting ingame friendships. personally, ive made some good friends in EQ2 and FFXI alike, from hardcore adventurers to skilled crafters to witty friend-figures. To wrap it up, it feels to me that EQ2 eliminated many of FFXI's faults and borrowed some of its strong points. All in all, i strongly recommend this game.

I had just typed up some notes on EQ2 earlier today, was gonna post it in FFXI forums:

Here are some observations on EQ2 for FFXI players who haven’t played EQ1 or 2. I have over 1500 hours of playing time in FFXI, and about 15 hours in EQ2 (I haven’t played EQ1). In EQ2, I’m a level 10 summoner, headed for conjurer.

EQ2 is generally very similar to FFXI; there are far more similarities than differences.

EQ2 has better graphics. In general, things look more realistic—surface textures are more detailed. NPCs move (look around, stretch, etc.) even when no one is engaging them.

NPCs talk (with sound). This initially seemed cool, but now it’s annoying, since they’ll talk to me even if I haven’t targeted them. Perhaps there’s some way to turn this off that I haven’t found.

FFXI’s music is much better.

Mob names are color-coded to indicate their level compared to yours and whether they are aggressive. (Blue=easy, green=decent, etc.; the name text is outlined in red if it’s aggressive.) If you target a linking mob, other mobs of its species within linking distant will also light up.

The biggest difference is in jobs. You can’t switch jobs as one does in FFXI and there is no support job. You start out as one of four archetypes: fighter, scout, mage (like BLM), priest (like WHM). At level 10 you choose one of three job classes, then at level 20 you choose between two subclasses. As far as I know, when you advance you retain the spells and abilities of the preceding archetype and class. (e.g., a level 10 summoner has all the spells & abilities of a level 9 mage). There are 24 (4x3x2) different subclasses (jobs) beyond level 20, but to me they seem somewhat redundant, so there aren’t really any jobs that are substantially different from the ones in FFXI.

There are more character races in EQ2, but here again some seem rather redundant (e.g., half-elf), and there isn’t anything nearly as cute as a Tarutaru nor as sexy as a Mithra.

When you create your character, you choose to be either good or evil; good characters start in the city of Qeynos (pronounced KEY-nos), evil ones in Freeport. Some jobs/races are predetermined as one or ther other. At level 15, you may do a difficult quest to switch sides. I don’t yet understand the implications of the good/evil dichotomy.

EQ2 has much better mapping feature. When you call up the map of your current zone it appears in a movable window on top of the main screen and about 1/3 its size. Your position and direction are updated on the map in real time. I like this a lot.

EQ2 has a Quest Journal that tells you what the next step is in each of your quests. This saves a ton of time. The current task for your currently selected quest is shown in the top right corner of the main screen at all times. Generally, quests are simpler (some are absurdly simple) and more numerous than in FFXI, although perhaps not as important.

FFXI: Alexander server, Neuron (hume, drk52, whm38, war37, smn25, etc.), Golgi (taru, whm7).
EQ2: Unrest server, Arreaux (high elf, summoner 10)

I'm an ex FFXI person and my thoughts in a nutshell:

- Grouping is far easier in Eq2, the downside is that some groups can often be a little unorganised.

- Solo is definately possible in EQ2

- You get XP from doing quests and there is no deleveling in Eq2

- Crafting is more enjoyable in Eq2, although FFXI definately has a better selling system with the AH and bazaar. Having to stay in your dwelling to sell stuff (unless you like to use the auction chat) is a pain.

- Graphics are pretty sweet in Eq2, but I know the stylized look of FFXI appeals to alot of people. Also unless you have a decent system, Eq2 will not run as you'll probably expect.

- Seems to me that there is less emphasis on worry about what level you are in Eq2 than FFXI. There seems to be more diversity

- Heroic Oppertunities in EQ2 are very much like skillchains although I haven't been in one party yet who actually uses them (as a group)... luckily you can do by yourself.

- There are new things added or changed in Eq2 all the time. This can be a good thing or bad...depending on you point of view.
I tend to lean on good myself, but it can be a bit confusing.

- Unlike FFXI housing cost money to upkeep, as well as armor (and weapons) need to be repaired if you die. Food, on the other hand, at the moment just seems to boost health and strength regen faster..although hopefully that will change soon.

- Eq2's interface is moddable, which for some people is more fun than playing

In a few words eq2 is non-liniar and it is so hard to discribe the ammount of depth it has vs ffxi. I am a pali in this game and there is always something to do or go and so much to exsplore including finding the history of the place. Kinda neat if you ask me.

So if you could only play one what would you prefer? Stay with FFXI or go to EQ2?

deleted my content id's and wiped FFXI completely off the harddrive.. there's simply no way I can play it again after EQ2.

sorta reminds me of a flight sim I loved.. Tie Fighter. I played it religiously.. it was great.. loved every minute of the game and had finished it twice.. One day I downloaded a little demo for this space sim.. Decent: Freespace, played it for 5 minutes...

then promptly deleted tie fighter off my system.. I knew I'd never play it again after the experience freespace offered, the best had been bested. I proceeded to play the demo almost daily til the game was released.

That said, will EQ2 be for you.. can't say.. all the post in the world will not answer that question for you. Everyone is biased, people cannot play on the same level of ability. For example.. many complain that solo'ing is hard after 20th level.. I've yet to come across a solo orange con or lower I can't beat.. I'll tell you what I tell everyone else.. try it for yourself first month is a freebie, enter the game with an open mind and objectivity...

it's not FFXI - don't expect it to be..
it's not EverQuest1 - don't expect it to be..
it's not DAOC - don't expect it to be..
it's not Lineage II - thank you god... ^_~

and if the game proves to be your thing.. enjoy it...
but if the game is not your thing, that's fine, move on.

I would say the only thing EQ is lacking in comparison is the Auction house system and the Inbox from FFXI , other then that EQ2 has more rewarding gameplay and quests . And you dont need to actually set time aside specifically to farm to get a decent ammount of money in EQ2 like in FFXI , i remember tons of time where i had to actually set aside time to farm in FFXI wich IMO not only is annoying but also hurts the lower people in the zone who are actually tryin to lvl .

Oh and you can actually solo with decent results in EQ2 . Where as in FFXI you basically HAD to group after 12 or risk constant death . Oh and i dont think you can de-lvl in EQ2 either like in FFXI . So all in all i would say EQ2 is drastically more fun to play then FFXI was IMO . But the having to be online and in your house to sell is kinda dumb .

Oh well take the good with the bad :)

I'd say Eq2, as long as your cool with the fact that it's still a little rough around the edges.

i myself went into EQ2 wantin very much to dislike or hate the game so i wouldnt want to leave FFXI an my friends on there, but EQ2 was so much better than FFXI in many ways that have already been described that within 6 days i was sayin my goodbye's givin out my equip to LS mates, and tryin to get some of them to come over to EQ2 aswell hasn't worked out yet, too many were on PS2. yeah, the game is still rough, but almost daily there is some improvments being made to the game, and schedualed downtimes for US servers (yes another importnt thing is the servers are in the US!) are at 10 am EST unlike FFXI where it seemed the jp likeed to schedual downtimes to be at 4 pm est jus to **** off the american players.

oops almost forgot to mention for the most part the community of players are alot nicer their isnt this mad dash of fastest gets the mob like you get so badly on many many nm's in FFXI, when a named spawns oft you will see shouts about wether others need the named mob or not, it is generally a much more polite atmosphere over what many of us were used to in FFXI
