I had just typed up some notes on EQ2 earlier today, was gonna post it in FFXI forums:
Here are some observations on EQ2 for FFXI players who haven’t played EQ1 or 2. I have over 1500 hours of playing time in FFXI, and about 15 hours in EQ2 (I haven’t played EQ1). In EQ2, I’m a level 10 summoner, headed for conjurer.
EQ2 is generally very similar to FFXI; there are far more similarities than differences.
EQ2 has better graphics. In general, things look more realistic—surface textures are more detailed. NPCs move (look around, stretch, etc.) even when no one is engaging them.
NPCs talk (with sound). This initially seemed cool, but now it’s annoying, since they’ll talk to me even if I haven’t targeted them. Perhaps there’s some way to turn this off that I haven’t found.
FFXI’s music is much better.
Mob names are color-coded to indicate their level compared to yours and whether they are aggressive. (Blue=easy, green=decent, etc.; the name text is outlined in red if it’s aggressive.) If you target a linking mob, other mobs of its species within linking distant will also light up.
The biggest difference is in jobs. You can’t switch jobs as one does in FFXI and there is no support job. You start out as one of four archetypes: fighter, scout, mage (like BLM), priest (like WHM). At level 10 you choose one of three job classes, then at level 20 you choose between two subclasses. As far as I know, when you advance you retain the spells and abilities of the preceding archetype and class. (e.g., a level 10 summoner has all the spells & abilities of a level 9 mage). There are 24 (4x3x2) different subclasses (jobs) beyond level 20, but to me they seem somewhat redundant, so there aren’t really any jobs that are substantially different from the ones in FFXI.
There are more character races in EQ2, but here again some seem rather redundant (e.g., half-elf), and there isn’t anything nearly as cute as a Tarutaru nor as sexy as a Mithra.
When you create your character, you choose to be either good or evil; good characters start in the city of Qeynos (pronounced KEY-nos), evil ones in Freeport. Some jobs/races are predetermined as one or ther other. At level 15, you may do a difficult quest to switch sides. I don’t yet understand the implications of the good/evil dichotomy.
EQ2 has much better mapping feature. When you call up the map of your current zone it appears in a movable window on top of the main screen and about 1/3 its size. Your position and direction are updated on the map in real time. I like this a lot.
EQ2 has a Quest Journal that tells you what the next step is in each of your quests. This saves a ton of time. The current task for your currently selected quest is shown in the top right corner of the main screen at all times. Generally, quests are simpler (some are absurdly simple) and more numerous than in FFXI, although perhaps not as important.
FFXI: Alexander server, Neuron (hume, drk52, whm38, war37, smn25, etc.), Golgi (taru, whm7).
EQ2: Unrest server, Arreaux (high elf, summoner 10)
