Any advice for race selection for a mage? Wondering both from the viewpoint of stats and racial abilities, as well as any disparities with high-end gear that's wearable by only certain races. Also, disparities with quests and areas that are restricted to by race. Thanks much.
I've not really noticed any gear restrictions based on class...
nor have I noticed anything quest related either.. obviously if you start in greystone yard as opposed to willow wood, you'll do the greystone yard quest first.. but there's nothing stopping you from doing the willow wood quest first should you desire..
other than the INT number and how it relates to your base power pool.. I don't think there's any real restrictions as far as character race is concerned.. in short, play what you enjoy.
I've seen troll mages in Freeport and barbarian mages in Qeynos.. they seem to do just fine.. so I don't think it's a big deal. I'm more a classic RPG'er.. i tend to make my mages Elves (well that and I think elves are nifty) but I have a half-elf mage cause I liked her hair.. :-P

If you are picking your race based on traditional mage stats, I don't see ANY reason why you wouldn't be an erudite UNLESS you wanted to be able to do some melee as well. If you are going for pure caster though, erudite is the way to go. If you want to be better at taking damage and/or doing melee, then its all a matter of choice.

I have a Kerran Mage. I know that they don't have a lot of INT at base, but I used to play a Vah Shir & I liked them. I haven't noticed much problem with mana pool or anything, & I can melee OK - not much, but I don't get slaughtered right away. The biggest problem I have with the game is lag in the cities - it's terrible!
