I am currently in A tradeskill society on my server, it is level 15 and I am ranked #8 out of about 2400 people affiliated with my society. What does this ranking and society level do for me and the rest of the people in our society?

The higher the rank of your Society, the wider variety of stuff the merchant has to sell. That's why most people keep crafting in their Wholesaler even after they join a Workshop.
Your rank is simply a measurement of how many status points you've contributed to your Society from doing their tasks for them. Each one is worth 100 points.
