All This hate for a Paladin..Why?Follow

I have been reading a good bit of post about choosing a guardian or a paladin and the differences. And what I have pretty much came to understand from what I have read is that most people think the Paladin suck in Tanking skills compared to a Guardian. I however, want to become a Paladin because I being a RPer do not see how a Paladin could suck...I mean they are not ment to do great damage I know but I thought they were supposed to be able to take a hit square to the chin..you know.

So my question is...is what I have came to understand about a Paladin true..are they really not better tanks than a Guardian? I can't decide which one I want to play now..all though I lean more towards a Paladin.

Thanks!

You'll find that when you get into arguments like "Guardian tanks better than Paladin", etc., that there is alot of statistical "hair splitting" going on. Don't let it spoil your fun. For a good player of each class, the differences are so subtle that you should just play whichever of the two you feel pulled more towards.

Each of the two classes is very effective at tanking, they just go about the business of tanking in a subtly different manner. And each class has special abilities which enchances their own unique subtle differences.

So let the statisticians work their magic, but at the end of the day it isn't going to matter much for the average player. The first and foremost thing to do is have fun, and if playing a Pally is what is fun for you, then don't play another class just because some dude with a bloated Excel worksheet says you ought to play a Guardian.

Enjoy!

People are missing the point with a Paladin, a paladin looking at the spells they get, are designed to be a support or second tank.

they are adept at aiding the main tank by reducing the damage he takes, increaing his AC at the expence of there own etc etc.

A Guardian with a Paladin in the group will be able to tank higher lvl mobs than a Guardian alone.

People are still putting EQ templates on EQ2 classes and that is a serious error of judgement.

I hate crusaders because they get a mount at 20... all I ever got was this wonderful glowing hand of... something not cool.

:D I keed I keed.

Seriously though, RussoEQ gives good advice--don't listen to the versus threads. Play what you want to play. Some versus threads actually have good info, but most deteriorate to whiny little "my class is better than your class" and "it's not fair that class has x, nerf 'em!". I've seen many threads in the Fighter's forums concerning all jobs and I've actually played with a few brawlers, crusaders and fellow warriors. All are pretty balanced, at least up to the 20's. The defining skills won't appear until late 20's early 30's but the basic "flavor" starts once the classes branch off of the Fighter Archetype. I think it's a shame that you can't try the different classes before you have to make a decision, but it is how it is.

And if you roleplay, then you most likely won't be playing much with the min/max'ers, so don't worry about it.

First off thats the only reason i can find to hate a Paladin too.
They get a horse ..RAtz..But then hes also my ally .what Jarkeld Hammerhiem said is so true..Support Tank . I play a Warrior and its nice to look over my shoulder and say OT and know its taken care of. The game is still a bit buggy when it comes to agro..
Not sure if its designed that way or not,, time will tell ..
If you play what everyone else thinks you should play you will never enjoy the game.. If you want to be a Paladin then be the best Paladin there is..Like wise for any class

They are absolutely correct, and if you feel the need to put a spin from EQ1 pallys to EQ2 they are not really supposed to be tanks. There are at times and levels where you can almost tank with any melee class depending on gear and most importantly as stated above SUPPORT.

I rather feel all the classes in this game are extremely well balanced. In Freeport where most of my toons are, I would take a guardian class to tank and I also would take a shadow knight too, if you have a good healer and hopefully another good support class (like shamans :) ) doesnt really matter which of the two you are talking about tanks. I feel Paladins have more rolls at their disposal to play than a strait up tank class.

Play what ever class you think is cool, not what everyone else says is better than another class. The object is to have fun, play a roll (which I wish more would actually roll play :) ) and be the best Paladin you can.

My EQ2 should be in my hands tomorrow. I'm think of starting of with a Barbarian in order to become a Paladin, do you think that's ok? I mean, their STR is fine, but will I miss de INT for the pally? I played EQ1 but only as a wizard so to be the tank will be completely new to me :)

Crusaders, both Paladin and Shadow Knights, use Wisdom as their power stat. IMHO, starting stats don't mean jack for the most part. The minor edge they might give you is not enough to warrant playing one race over another. Play the race you think you would most enjoy playing. I am an Iksar Shadowknight, I doubt they have the best stats, in fact I think they have stats more suited to INT caster classes, than they do Crusaders.

I chose Iksar because throughout EQ1 they were the outcast race (as far as in-game lore goes), now other races are forced to deal with their presence.

Find the race that suits you, and play that one. I'm sure you wont regret it.

yes yes pick your race you like =) im an Kerra Shadowknight well will be soon in a few hours when i log on anyways really from what i know my dad is a guardian an one lvl higher then me an for the most part are friend who is a cleric says i do a better job at tanking but yet i always get these warriors an guardians saying that im not a tank (grrr them) now see i dont think my race or class over my dads troll guardian has anything to do with it i think its how well you play your character now i have always played a tank class in eq1 an eq2 also most other games there just the class i like so basicly pick what ever class an race you would most enjoy when you enjoy your character you play better i think!

I've got a lvl 22 paladin and I think (though I never have played as a guardian) that they are much better. I've always been paladins or temple knights in games and I like to continue it. But the Paladin may not be as strong as the guardian but still a great tank if you have correct armor and their heals and wards make them awesome as a solo because there isnt much need for a healer. Only problem is damage, but with a 2 handed sword I think its fine.

I have a 24 pally and a 23 Guardian...I peresonally have played Paladins on most games that have them and think they are the best all round melee type class, at least for me it is. But comparing the 2 of them i must edge a little..and only a very teeny tiny little bit towards the guardian. Main reason is i can use any type of weapon i want to use. But thats about it. As far as tanking goes..well..they can wear the same armor and have excellent taunting abilities. I believe..and this is a no-brainer..that the pally much better to solo with, what with all the utility spells and self healing its hard to beat.

In the end its all about fun. Its a game for gods sake. Game=fun, so do what ya wanna do. If u are gonna make a pally just for fun..Make an ogre and do betrayal quest and choose Pally. The horse is freakin huge!

Game on peeps!

Actually, crusaders use (STR+WIS)/2 as their power stat.

and to sum up the "hate" for paladins: Those who hate on paladins generally expect them to be more like a warrior or more like a healer, or something like that. If they read up on what a paladin is and what his/her role is supposed to be, they would sing a different tune.
