Ok tips 101 for tradeskills, some are borrowed some are mine some people may disagree with.

1. Join a tradeskill society <I assume you have already> don't bother with IoR for reasons i will come to later.

When choosing a tradeskill society make sure it is at least lvl 6, you find this by looking under the society header in the EQ symbol. this is so you have access to basic material like cheep water and candles.

2. Gather components

For my "get too lvl 10" guide you will need to gather about the following quantity of tier 1 goods

1 stack of turtle/deer/fish/. <what ever is easiest>
2 stacks of roots.
1 stack of severed elm.
2 stacks of tin
1 stack of sullied low quality pelts
1 stack of lead/malacite

It looks like a fair amount but it should take you no time at all to get, with the added bonus of all the ? you can get at the same time.

3. Organise your tradeskill spells.

All the spells come in set of three, some obviously fit some don't, i will list the sets but its up to you to decide what is for which tradeskill and it's not always obvious.

a. Experiment/reaction/theory
b. Stiching/nimble/knots
c. Spellbinding/lettering/notation
d. Round cut/mind over matter/focus of spirit
e. constant heat/seasoning/awareness
f. Handwork/measure/cooking
g. Tempering/hardening/anneal
h. Metallurgy/Dovetail/concentrate
i. Angle joint/isothermic/Strikes

I put them vertically below each other in sets of three, that way all te ones i will need are next to each other.

4. Getting started.

If you did the tradeskill quest in IoR you will only need to do one item to ding lvl 4 tradeskiller so buy the lvl 3+4 book at the vendor in the tradeskill house before going to the Keg and stove. Scribe the lvl 3 book straight away.

You will also need coal and water.

Hit B to bring up the recipes that you know and select the recipe involving the meat or fish you have, if none apear hit edit and look under "refine" or "interim"

Make up whatever stack of meat you have into food and improve to better food if you have the bits required, some recipes require spices that are bought of the same guy who sells the books.

The food skills are Seasoning / constant heat and awareness.

As you see the symbol apear in the bottom bar where you are making the food hit the same symbol in your skills menu.

When you have got that down you are ready to move on.

I surgest making yourself 12 Elm strong boxes and 4 raw leather satchels, this should get you close to lvl 10 and allow you to use most of the types of skills.

By the time you have made up a stack of food/drink you will be level 5 and all the required recipies are in the lvl 5 tradeskill book.

If you are unsure about anything just ask but it's easy once you take the plunge.

A handy site I use for crafting information is EQ2craft.

It can give information on the crafting books(what recipes they actually have), and some handy info about components that helped me with figuring out things to make so that I can be set for leveling my artisan levels alot more easily without having made stacks of junk that wouldn't be good but for a single recipe versus things that work for multiple recipes.
