NMs in EQ2?Follow

#1 Jan 18 2005 at 2:34 PM Rating: Good
Welcome, welcome everyone to another n00bish post from yours truely.

In todays episode I will be asking the 'probably' obvious question, are there NM's in Everquest 2?

Now by NMs I mean: Notorious Monster, who spawn at different times, (generally 1-2hr spawns), who are a bit tougher than their surrounding family mobs (meaning a badger, tougher than the other badgers right around it), and who drop lovely..very good...yummy...great items.

They will generally looks EXACTLY the same as the same mobs around it but are sometimes bigger, like a significant difference to where you can spot from a distance.

Now reason I am asking this is because last night while playing, I was doing this 'kill 5 hawk thing' for someone in Elddar (sp) and I saw this 'aggroed' type badger that I had never seen before in this area. (RIGHT as you begin to decend down into Forest Ruins), now with my natural NM hunting instinct from FFXI I immediately went after it. It was green, had that shady outline around the name meaning it was an aggro mob, it had 2 arrows in it, not sure if they were down or up.

Either way, we went at it, he was a lot tougher than the other badgers, his name was also alittle different, said something like Ridge Badger or something with an R in it. I killed him and a chest popped. I disarmed it and got a Bloodstained ...something, it was a shield none the less.

The stats on this thing are REALLY amazing. Like +2 AGI +2 WIS +6 HEALTH and like +3 power or something along those lines, plus the shield defense was like 10.

I was truely amazed at this seeing as how n00bish I am.

That's the reason why I'm asking.

yes, though they're often referred to as "Named mobs" or "Named's" it's the same as an NM.. few differences from FFXI NM's though:

you don't have to be WAYYY over level to beat some of them, but if they're gray to you.. you'll never get the item drop... however they ARE strong, trying to take one that's even match to you might not be a hot idea especially if it has one or two " ^ " symbols.

in EQ2 Named mobs always drop the item you want from them (unless of course they're gray to you).. so no camping them for hours or days at a stretch killing them multiple times in the hopes of just getting one drop...

I will warn you though.. there are a lot of things with "a name" in EQ2 as opposed to a "Named" mob.. how I tell the difference is simple:

something with a name will not drop much, if anything...

a "Named" mob from my experience will always drop a chest, if you can kill it.. and it'll likely be a tougher fight.. especially after you leave IoR. I've started seeing a LOT of named's that are double ^^ mobs. O_O

Good info Iaini.

However, I'd like to question the validity of them always dropping a chest. From what I can tell, they have a certain chance to drop a chest, but don't always (unless it's a quest item, in which they will always drop it.) I know I've killed the giant cube Named in Vermon's Snye about 4 times (with a group, was blue to us at the time). I believe it dropped a chest maybe 1 or 2 of those times, I know it didn't every time.

Maybe I'm wrong, and maybe they've changed it, but I do believe it's a random event to get a chest. It may be more likely that you get a chest, but I don't think it's 100%.

I could easily be wrong about the chest drop ratio... so far every named I've beaten has dropped a chest...

course.. that's a whopping 5 named mobs.. ^_~

I think I may just get lucky though.. I was out in the commonlands with my scout and got 3 chest in 3 kills. O_O

and wouldn't you know it one was one of those silly FSR's... /emote pulls hair and screams into a pillow

I had no idea... even after I ran into the named bear in Oakmyst the other night. He blind sided me and killed me once... almost got me again after I collected my shard! But I managed to introduce him to my guard friend!

I am not 100% sure, but of the many named mobs i've slain, i can't remember a one that didn't drop a chest. One of the earliest i remember would be the named fanatics in VS, would always get the leggins or the bracers he'd drop. Leggings i'm still wearing at 27. Chest drop for nameds may not be 100% but it's definately 80%+ chance, astronomically higher than non-nameds.

Yes.. nameds always drop a chest, the only nameds i can think of that DON'T are the nameds for the Betrayal quests. They are quest only mobs that's why.

Named does not allways drop chests no.
You dont need 'The banished' for the betrayelquest, neither do you need 'Grolwen Chiptooth', Grolwen is a questmob and I dont think he ever have droped a chest (atleast none of the five times I killed him), the banished have dropped 1 chest of the 10 times I have killed him.
I can say that none of the nameds I have killed more then 5 times allways drops a chest. My guess is therefor that some named that are questmobs never drops chest, other nameds dont allways drop chests but most of the time they do.

True, named mobs for quests do not always drop a chest. And some quest mobs never drop chests. But for the most part, regular named mobs do always drop the chest.
Everyone should have been introduced to this on the Isle of Refuge. Named mobs like the Shadow Serpent, and the High Priest, and the named bear, and the named spider, always dropped chests. The orc, for example, was named, but never dropped a chest. Other named mobs triggered by a quest, like the Pirate ghost, Rockbelly, always dropped a chest. Most of the time, the chests contained one item always, like the cutlass, and then some other item which could vary. This was so that people could get a group to help them and give the other item to people who helped.
Always, though, the named mobs tend to be ^^ mobs, and always a lot tougher than normal variants. And, if they con grey to you, they will not drop a chest. Therefore, if you need something they drop, you must kill them before they turn grey to you. If someone in your group is higher level than the others and the mob cons grey to them, it will con grey to the group. You may want to drop that member just for that fight, so the mob will drop a chest.
