I know that typing /loc or holding your mouse pointer over compass will give the three values.
I tried finding an object using cooridinates in Antonica and got very confused. The numbers would increase and decrease even though I was going straight in one direction!
Is there a brief primer on this subject somewhere?

Well, one represents Latitude, the other Longitude, and finally one represtents Altitude.
Moving diagnally or up/down hill will cause these numbers to change, moving straight north on a flat level surface will lead to only one changing incrimentally positive, while south will cause it to change negatively. Same way with West positive, and East negative.
It's just like coordinates on a map or globe of the Earth.
