Ok a little slow here, what is wrong w/ the avatar? Is that the knight picture w/ the lightning? what is so bad about that?

He changed it of course. it used to be a stick figure raping another in the butt doggy style and it said "PWNED" in big letters.

so THAT's what that was... I couldn't tell, sorta looked like typing wayyyyy too early in the morning with no caffine... so I just sorta took it with a grain of salt and ignored it as yet another avatar I couldn't make out..... 0_o

I'm have no idea why people tell people that they are leaving forums. It's the exact same thing when people write in they are leaving a game....everyone think about your responses to people who do this.

I can understand cancelling your account. There are plenty of forums that offer the same services. But having said that Ala is a good place for info. I can't see why ratings matter, nor if people write stupid things....just ignore them. I never look at ratings, it's not why I'm here, nor I think the averge person does. Simple as that.

sorry just my 2 cents.

completely off topic, but what the hell does "pwned" mean anyway? how exactly do you pronounce that?
#30 Jan 18 2005 at 12:28 PM Rating: Excellent
well I've been on a few forums.. but this is the first one with a rating system I've been on...

it's all well and good to have a contriversial view, but these forums, in addition to having the ever popular flame wars that can and will come up, give you the rate button where it's possible for one.. or many.. people to make their disapproval quite clear by nuking you below the filter..

why it's a big deal to some people I'll never quite understand, but oh well.. people are different. I'm certain no one has liked everything I've posted in the past but I learned a long time ago that pleasing all the people all the time will simply make yourself unhappy.

then there's the concept of affirmation: "If you like what I post rate up" type deal.. flip side of the same coin I think..

a helpful post is just that.. a helpful post.. weather you get rated up or not doesn't matter, weather you get thanked or not doesn't matter.. giving someone good information should be enough I would think... unless one is seeking affirmation of being a good person from the rest of us.

I simply refuse to rate someone down for having a different opinion.. since it's impossible to have a wrong opinion.. obvious trolling gets nuked though.. and silly things just get ignored.

course you can simply tow the party line and post dead pan neutral responses to everything til you have about 5000+ post count.. at which point your overall karma is near untouchable.

edit: oh I forgot...

"pwned" is supposedly the leet speak version of "owned" or "ownage" in short.. utterly destroying the competition so badly that the outcome was decided by fate long before the battle even began.. sometimes it's cute.. other times it's a term that's just sorta there. It was derived from a typo since "O" and "P" are quite close to each other on the keyboard... I suppose it became used enough to make it's way into typed slang and pop culture.

Because they are attention depraved.

Used by people who wish to be more unique. They refrain from using basic communication skills and English in order to draw more attention to themselves in efforts of individualism. It really doesn't have anything to do with a "pop culture," just morons who can't speak English even though its their native language.

Just as a little FYI kensi. If you are truely wanting some more reasons why people probably rate you down. I do it all the time. Why? When I first started using the Alla forums, to share my website with people because I thought it would help them. Just like it helps me and my guild, you flamed away and were very rude. Your avatar didn't help. Adjust your attitude and maybe you won't immediately come off like a jerk.

I don't remember being all-that-rude. I thought that I just told you that you had a nice layout. Well, sorry for being an *** to you then.

My avatar, yea it was suppose to be funny. Though I forgot that there are people who take offense to stick figures. So.. yes, I changed it. (I apologize for my sick sense of humor)

Brookie, no, I don't care if I get attention or not, seeing as attention normally brings rate downs in any shape. Because there are people on here who just suck in general. And as the title says "In search of new forums.", I have yet to find any that actually have people on them.. Funny enough..

Maybe I overreacted. I just wish they'd do away with the rating system.

Then take it up with the site mods/admins. The matter of the rating system has ben bandied about time and time again. It's not likely to go away.

Yes, I do want to be a highly rated forummer. I do care what people think about my post.

Then start working on your content and delivery. If you want to be "accepted", you need to be witty, amusing and worthwhile. Apparently some people don't find you as such. I suggest quitting EQ2 to devote more time here. Whining like a little bitch isn't going to help.

And it isn't fair that one person can rate you down on every single post you make with the sole purpose of being a jerk, and then others view your post as lowly compared to others with high ratings.

Fair? What's fair? If you've got such a problem with the flaws in the rating system....see my first paragraph.

Hey Kensi, yer okay. Not everyone is understood in here. You contribute a lot. People can be hard on you in here. It can be particularly hard when you post what to you is so obviously a good idea ... and then people come along and snipe at it and rip it to shreds mostly saying "are you high, SoE will never do that", "I think the game is fine just as it is and I don't mind its flaws at all thank you", or "I don't want SoE wasting time fixing that - I want them wasting time fixing this". Or you go out on a limb to be funny or something and get hammered for it. I've had to realize that sometimes how I think things and how I write things are really different - and if I reread before I post I see that what I've written doesn't convey what is in my head very well (so someone who doesn't know me reading it is gonna say "huh? what a jerk!" as opposed to "getting it". You've been hammered for you individuality - and - well, that's got to be a bummer. Well, GL - and don't be hard on yourself. Try to feel better.

heheh, looks like someone gave me a rate down for asking what pwned meant....thought it said I had been at 3.78 and now I'm at 3.13...oh well, if I was really that worried about it I'd create a 2nd account just to rate myself up. But, I've got just enough self esteem to not do that.

edit....I can't spell

Hey Evilgnomes, there should be a couple of places still left online to DL the game content for WoW.

I have just gotten the game end of last week and inside was a pass for a friend to play the game, it gives like a weeks worth of free game time. After that I assume you just go to normal monthly payments, anyway I'll hook you up with that pass if ya want.

Kensi,

With any forum it’s like that. I myself have been the “Nice guy” for a while. Even made a post that took 17 hours with out a single rate up. I have come to the realization of what a few have already said “who cares”. So what if I have 5.0 next my name. If you help others and answer questions I’m interested in reading your post or perhaps seek your help.

You have to look at it in a different way. If you enjoy helping others then take pride in that, you know the real truth and that’s all that matters. Don’t let a number decide how good/bad you are.

This is actually my first and only message board I’ve ever posted on. I only started posting for one reason. I strive to get better at writing and spelling. I’ve learned much with the flames I’ve received for those errors. Still do =)

I have not had to wait one second, however I'm in a lesser populated server.
People are still having to wait in queues to enter on the main servers, so if you get the game I would recomend looking at the number of players online for each server and maybe go with a medium load server during your peak time.

Edit sorry about the HJ kensei, we should get back on topic.
I do know how ya feal, somtimes it's as if somone follows you from thread to thread only to rate you down no matter what you say.

lol you can have the thread, I'm done complaining. Wow, ... W.O.W. has waiting lines? (Wouldn't have sounded too good with two wow's in a row). That's the first time I've heard of something like that.

Agreed, when someone uses the "whine" word in here they get my hackles up.

I know why people do it. But to me it's a form of cheap character assassination (imo). To me it comes off like this: that guy's weak, I'm gonna gank him --> "shut up you lousy whiner!"

Converting someone else's legitimate pain and problems to "whining" is a cheap shot - it's spin - it just pours salt in the wounds of someone who is hurting. I wish it would stop.

Kouranx, thanks but I think I'll just try to get us our own version. If someone can find it somewhere retail and charge me like 10 or 15 bucks over what they paid - plus six to eight bucks postage - I'll buy the game ... but ... I got tons of work right now, and if I get immersed in a new mmo I might get into trouble. I got eq2 figured out and can just come in a little a day, get a few things done, and get out. But thanks much and have fun, bro!

Oh Toxic, your post made me go back and check. Were you talking about your big spell compilation? I am 100% sure I rated u up to excellent on that one when I first saw it. But I dug it up and checked it out - and it must not have registered. So, I rated you up again. Hopefully it will stick this time. I often have this problem - my rates don't always work. That was an awesome post, btw. Thx.

A little FYI about the rating -

It's so the posters can "moderate" or police the forums themselves, and rely less on the actual admins to take care of bad posts. If you leave your filters on default, and all the bad posts get rated down, you won't see them.

Well, that's how it's supposed to work anyway. Smiley: smile

And it's a great idea if used by mature people (of all ages) but when used by vindictive, insecure little barstewards who feel it is a great way to "get even" when their puerile rant gets steamrollered it fails.
