problem with languagesFollow

I am having a problem with languages. I bought two language primers off the scribe in Willow Woods - Ayr'Dal and Feir'Dal - at a cost of 12s (!) each. I got a message saying " You have leant the basics of this language" or something for both but when I spoke to the scribe again she still talks in a language I can't understand. Also happened with NPCs in Baubleshire and Starcrest.

I sent a CS ticket to a GM and he/she said I had to use the command /language and that will give the languages I speak with a number but all I got was "Common" and "Ayr'Dal" and no number so I can't choose what language to speak.

Does anyone have any advice?

It sounds like you didn't really buy Fier'Dal or that the purchase didn't register properly.

Perhaps you bought the same book (Ayr'Dal) twice. I know that it is easy to leave an item selected on a vendor while using "examine" on a different item and then think "Yup, I'll buy it" and hit "Buy" before you realise it is the wrong thing selected.

You really don't have to change language to speak to the NPC. I have done this type of quest with Dane Steelfist in Graystone, with several in Castleview and with Turgen in TS. If you bought the book and it said "You have learned the basics of ..." then that is all you need to do. All that changing your output language will do is prevent most people from understanding a word you're saying.

I appreciate that 12sp is a pretty steep price to experiment with but I would go back to the scribe and buy the Fier'Dal book once more making sure it is what you buy and paying especial attention to the transaction.

You should get a message saying that you paid the scribe 12s immediately followed by a "you learned the basics of" message. Watch for them and re-direct spam to another window. If the messages do not appear or there is some kind of bug (eg you buy the book marked Fier'Dal and it teaches you Ayr'Dal) you are then well placed to /bug it and screenshot the transaction (do we have /report in this game?).

Just to be clear on this it is the scribe in Willow Wood that you cannot understand? I'll wander over and try my luck.

Thank you for your response. Yes it was the scribe in WW Brooklilly or something. I am almost certain I bought both books not the same one twice.

What language does she speak then? Feir'Dal? and what does Ayr'Dal do then? Is there a way of finding out what language an NPC speaks before buying a primer to understand him/her?

Again thanks for your help

Fier'Dal is Wood Elf. I can only assume that they invented Ayr'Dal for Half Elf which is strange since they are described as "outcasts with no culture of their own"

I have a half elf and I can wander another character over later and see if they can understand before and after buying the book.

You have to make an assumption about their language but it is pretty simple except in this one instance. Languages are racial and the racial differences are mostly pretty obvious. I mean nobody would mistake Dane Steelfist for a barbarian Smiley: smile. Wood Elf/Half Elf is probably the hardest to spot.

The chap at the Elddar Grove gate from Willow Wood speaks Half elf since only my half elf can understand him
