memory leak issue fixed on my comp.Follow

#1 Jan 14 2005 at 12:26 PM Rating: Decent
The issue on these memory grips is getting a bit crazy. I've done a few things and have found a great work around for the memory problems we are all gripping about at least for my setup. I've got an Athlon64 3000+ o/c to 2.4 with 512Mb of PC4000. I had an issue at first then I tried a 2 tests, first test was increasing the memory to 1GB and the problem was still there. So my thought is adding more memory doesn't help. I have a 40Gb SATA drive partitioned into 3 partitions. 1 for Win @ 8GB, 1 for games @ 24GB, 1 for programs @ 8GB. I went and manually changed the virtual memory settings. I set drive C to no paging file, went to the game drive and set it to min=1000 max=1000. This is the drive where EQ2 resides. Rebooted the sys and have had no problems at all. The zoning time are less then 20secs even after being on for up to 8hrs. My roomate did the same thing after he saw my results and he's got the same system execpt he has a 6800gt and I have a 9800pro. Fixed his problem right away. I don't know if it will help with more memory then 512mb but couldn't see why it would not help. Just some input for anyone to try to help resolve the issue, all I can say is it worked wonders for me. Plus it saved me the cash from going and getting more memory, now I'll wait and save the cash for the 6800gt once they can resolve the stutter problem :)) Plz post back if you try this and it makes a difference I'm curious to know the results if anyone is willing to try it. Thanks and good luck to you.

I got a Pceleron, 1gb of ram and nvidia fx 5200 pc and the memory leak was eating me alive after 3-4 hours. What i did was download freeram xp pro 1.40 and set it on auto while i play and it works, went through less trouble than you did 2 =P

That thought crossed my mind but I am real picky about what is running in the backround while gaming. Plus I like to tweak things a bit so it gave me something to do. And so far so good but I guess all that matters is what will fix the issue. All I can say is gotta love new games NOT. I hate this part but it's fixed for me so I'm happy again :)). Peace

So basically you moved your page file onto your gaming partition? A question for you.

I didn't realize that Windows would let it be on any other drive than C. I'll look into this for myself, but you may know the answer off hand. What if you're using a different drive completely? I have a 40 GB drive I boot Windows off of, and a 160 GB (2 RAIDed drives) that I use for everything else, itself partitioned into 2 drives (one for EQ2 / WoW and the other for storage / other games). Can the page file reside on a different physical drive than Windows does?

Basically, from what I can tell, you move the page file physically closer to your EQ2 install so the heads and plates within your hard drive are moving less. It sounds plausable... Perhaps I'll try this when I get home tonight.

I'm lucky, I have experienced no memory leak at all. I'm running an Athlon 2800_ chip, 1 gb 3200 DDR SDRAM 333 and an ATI Radeon 9550. My zone times are never more than 10-15 seconds EVER and I have played for up to 12 hours straight with frequent zoning. *knocks on wood* Hope it remains that way.

Lew... to answer your question here is some info for you. Hope this helps you out, but yes you can put it on a different drive. The info below shows you what are the best result by moving the swap file.

If anything, create (preferably on a separate partition), a swap space of constant size. For example, select Custom Size and place 1000 in "Initial" and 1000 in "Maximum" Size boxes, then click Set Button. This will reduce the amount of work needed to dynamically resize the page file, usually when you need it most.

Some deffinitions need to be explained:

Physical RAM ~ The amount of Memory installed on a system. Physical RAM is "way" faster than a "swap file" or "swap space."

Swap File ~ The file that is located on your hard drive that "acts" like Physical RAM but is way slower.

Virtual Memory ~ The name used for the sum of Physical RAM and the Swap File. In other words: Physical RAM + Swap File = Virtual Memory. You cannot "disable" Virtual Memory even if you disable the Swap File. Meaning, 2 GB RAM + 0 MB Swap File = 2 GB Virtual Memory.

From Fastest to Slowest, these are the configuration you can try:

* No swap file at all. Some software may fail. You also need "much" memory to do this. Greater than 512 MB, but I recommend 2 GB.
* A static swap file on a separate hard drive (and preferably, controller) from Windows and frequently accessed data.
* A dynamic swap file on a separate hard drive (and preferably, controller) from Windows and frequently accessed data.
* A static swap file on a separate partition, but on the same physical hard drive as Windows.
* A dynamic swap file on a separate partition, but on the same physical hard drive as Windows.
* The Default: A dynamic swap file on the same partition and physical hard drive (usually C:) as Windows.

Many factors affect performance of the I/O and Hard Drive system. Namely, "where" on the drive the particular swap partition is located, as well as fragmentation of the swap file itself.

I have:
P4 3.0
1 gig PC3200 RAM
Radeon 9800 Pro AIW

I haven't had a single issue, and load times are very fast.

God I love this game.

What I have done to deal with the mem leak issue was ;
1. Went from 512 (256x2 dual chan pc3200) to 1 gig ( 512x2 dual chan pc3200 $129)
2. Changed page files to static ( min=max)
3. Play in windowed mode
4. Defrag weekly

I used to have to restart every 2 hours, especially when zoning between city zones often, but now my zone load times have remained constant after even 2hrs of playing.
