Backpack Tokens?Follow

#1 Jan 14 2005 at 10:14 AM Rating: Default
(Note: Also posted in the tradeskill forum)

Anyone who has played EQ I in the past year knows about the tokens for backpacks, bags, quivers, etc...

Was a fantastic idea... so WT Hell happened to them in EQ II?

How hard would it be to integrate that code into the current software??? Patch it on test and see how it goes!

Perhaps have the brokers trade the packs for your posted ammount for a token (not stackable) and let you sell them in the merchant mode in your room.

I made 20 Tanned Leather Backpacks last night... (6 standard & 14 pristine)....
I then headed for the newbie zone of Oakmyst and /auctioned them for 5sp each... These are 8-slot 5% & 10% WR packs... you would think they would sell. NOBODY accepted my offers...
In fact I was /petitioned for spamming. (Maybe I deserved that, maybe not.)
The closest pack the vendor sells is a Tanned Leather Satchel (6-slot 0% wr) that costs about 6sp 40cp (varies from merchant to merchant)

I wasn't trying to take advantage of people and I was still petitioned.

This led to me having a discussion w/ a GM about spamming a zone. I mean WT Hell? I tried to talk to him about the fact I can only sell 6 at a time in vendor mode.
He said there hasn't been enough people asking for the tokens yet but he would put it on his comments list.
I got the idea that its right up there with gifting 1 gp to ALL starting players... BLEH.

Anyone else feel this needs to be changed?

Not sure just how it could be implemented, since in EQ1, we had a central trading zone, and the backpack lady was in that zone (bazaar).

Who would we turn the tokens in to? Or would we have to have several of these NPCs?

Other than that, I can see how it might be a nice idea.

Have the brokers do the tokens...

They are constants in just about every trade instance and I know there is one in North Qeynos (not sure about other zones --- haven't played a evil yet)...

As far as the brokers are concerned there is no difference between them other than their names... I am guessing they use the same module coding for them (why re-invnet the wheel for each broker?)... So modifying that module shouldn't be that difficult.

EDIT: Also, its not like they don't have examples of working code to start with... we know the tokens work in EQ I

It's a great idea. Expect to see it in-game three years from now.

Sorry, that's pretty much how these jerks operate.

I would've bought packs from you, that was a great price. See how the game rewards you for being innovative and nice? Some asshat petitions u for spamming. Smiley: rolleyes

What probably happened was that the players in the zone had their inv full of crappy 4 slot and 6 slot packs and didn't wanna bother juggling - or they didn't have 5 s cuz the only way a normal player could get good money w/out investing many hours in a tradeskill or whatever was nerfed the last patch.

Expect people in here to "not get" your post, also. You may not even want to read the responses - trust me - they are highly likely to depress you. See, you've actually posted a wonderful and good idea. This is just going to throw a lot of people off.

To answer the swimming kitty cat, I don't think it would take a brain surgeon to program a "bag holder" in a major zone, like South Q and E FP - and when you give him or her a bag you get a unique token linked to it - and then you can sell the token to a player. The token can be examined - and it says it is linked to a pristine 8 slot pack w/ 10% weight reduction - whatever. They turn in the token to the bag lady npc and get the pack. It sounds pretty dadgum trivial to me. I mean, doing something like that would only make play easier and would lower the prices of something we all need by facilitating the market for them - so knowing SoE - expect three years. Literally. That's how those good, wonderful loving and caring people operate (I grew to love them playing EQ1, they are so so nice and responsive to the player's needs - yes indeedy - and no, they NEVER act like people who know they have us hooked like fish, nooooooo - never). In EQ1 you could not sell bags as you were only able to sell from the special "Trader Satchel" and you could not put a bag in a bag. The token was introduced to make bag selling possible.

In EQ2 any empty bag on you becomes saleable automatically. The only benefit from the vast complication of introducing tokens and NPC's to serve as "bag ladies" is the number of bags you could sell.

The tokens were far from ideal in EQ anyway as they failed to show the details of the bag merely it's name.

While I can see the benefits of a token system - especially where strongboxes are involved I don't think it justifies a whole new layer of code in an already creaking game.

I don't think the lack of a token makes spamming acceptable and you have to know that before you go and make 20 bags.

COBRA,

Gee, thanks...
So if someone goes to the effort of making some fairly decent starting bags they should just EAT the expense??

I hope you have your own tradeskills worked up.. not EVERYONE has!

/sigh... I guess I will make a point of not making anymore...

I think all Cobra meant was maybe you shouldn't make 20 bags at one time. Just make 2 or 3, then make a few other things to get your TS exp up.

That's the way I took it, anyway.

See Elodarian? I'm PSYCHIC! Maybe ten minutes have gone by, and your good idea has already been insensitively and irrationally hammered by another ... and he's lectured you for spamming a zone even though you were offering good 8 slot bags for a really cheap price. (edit) And before I could even post this another has come in defending the guy who is irrationally hammering your idea - see you only need to sell 2 bags at once - she knows- you don't! Gah.

Oh Gawd, us players are so "not on the same page" I wanna puke! Where is the puking smiley face? I want one! But wait, that'd mean more code to the creaking Allah system... heck no, better not rock the boat!

I'm inspired to song! (sorry, song gets edited away - I'm in a bad enough mood - and I'll just get in trouble for it)

Have a great day everyone! Smiley: smile Smiley: smile Smiley: smile Smiley: wink Smiley: smile Smiley: smile Smiley: tongue Smiley: smile Smiley: smile

I would like to see the token system implemented in EQ2 as well. It was a really nice and smart addition to EQ1.

As far as the spamming goes, where you using the /auction channel? How ofter were you advertising your wares? every 30 seconds, 2 minutes, 5 minues, 10?

I just realized why I'm so frustrated - Smiley: oyvey - and why I was inspired to song in the earlier post. What kind of a player would /petition for someone spamming? Why the hell not just /igore?

I'm mad because whenever I've had to petition, I've had to sit there for HOURS ... and sometimes log w/ the problem unsolved. And if peevish little oversensitive types are /petitioning for the horrid crime of spamming (and not simply /ignoring) and clogging up the /petition lines - making people with REAL problems wait even longer....

Well, I must be --> Smiley: drool2 There must be something wrong with me. Gawd forbid some player selling 8 slot backpacks for a really cheap price should mess up your day so badly that you have to /PETITION over it - I mean - no, I'm the one who's nutz. Yeah. Me. Smiley: banghead I have the problem. Not anyone else.... yada yida bingo bong, fleepa dreempy waaaaatuuuu....

whoever petitioned you should be beat over the head with a baseball bat for being retarded. he was probably one of those jackasses who yells at people for spaming when all they do is say /ooc lvl 25 assasin lfg.

and backpack tokens would be great that way you could make your 20 backpacks and keep them in token form in a strongbox to sell them on the market. that way you dont have to keep deleting your crafted items or bags in your inventories just to sell 1. that way if you just like making backpacks and nothing else then you can amke your backpacks without having to quit or delete themn after 6 are made.

Wow, reading not your strong point eh?

If you want to try and pass off making 20 bags as something you did to train your tradeskills then either you are an idiot or you think we are. You get most experience from making different items. And specifically even if you feel like making a lot of the same for skilling then you pick a stackable item. You have to be a 24-carat dyed in the wool halfwit to make 20 items that are not only non-stackable but don't fit inside containers (still wondering how you did this with one character - that is all your slots + 2).

You obviously did it for the profit. This is perfectly fine and your price was very reasonable but in order to get a GM to talk to you about spamming you must have been creating a nuisance. A GM will usually observe invisibly in these situations before making themselves known to ensure they are not responding to a hoax or vindictive accusation. So while I agree there are some very silly people around who will use petition inappropriately this does sound as if you deserved it.

And I don't know what stirred up the evil gnome. I guess he feels he is the only one allowed to be negative about anything here. Maybe he feels we should have to wait until he has posted a verdict on ideas before we dare risk contradicting him. For a guy who has been openly talking about quitting for WoW that isn't likely to happen.

There are an awful lot of ideas and mechanisms in EQ1 that are not in EQ2. Many would be a definite advantage. Yet let anyone make comparisons and people - and gnomes - leap out of the woodwork shouting "This is not EQ1".

I suspect that the two dev teams have diverged continuously since work on EQ2 started and a lot of the better ideas introduced to EQ1 recently will either never make EQ2 or take a very long time to do it. Some of them would in any case be inappropriate.

I don't want to take a moral position on this hot button issue! I just had a thought regarding implimentation... I think it could be done without affecting anyone but the buyer and the crafter.

Just include a right click context menu on all the containers and the tokens that offers - *create token* / *exchange token*

To prevent people from *deflating* and *re-inflating* containers the options could be flagged so they were a one shot deal.

I think it's pretty obvious what stirred up the EvilGnome.

On top of that I can't get WoW, so I'm even that much more grumpy. Smiley: glare

Actually, as an idea, I would think a nifty way to 'fix' this would be to make bags, as hinted on above, "foldable" by anyone.

Folded bags could stack *OR* just be one slot items that fit within containers. It would still display the stats of the bag, but only operate as a container if it were "unfolded".

That would eliminate the need for a 3rd party NPC, and would keep the stats displayable at any time.

I could have sworn I harvested some Dilithium crystals the other day. But that might have been just before I woke up shouting "She canna take it Cap'n"

The tokens aren't a bad idea. They would be a nice thing to have when everything else gets fixed.

Currently I'd rather be able to stay in a tradeskill instance for an hour or so without it crashing, or stop losing my hotkeys, or not have the Griffon stop 20 feet from the tower.

And when they get on to new features I think a shared cash slot is the number one. They obviously intended people to have alts for crafting but don't give us any way to feed them. I can live with having limited slots for bag sales for a good while yet. Smiley: smile

You accidentally warped over to Star Trek Galaxy, the hot new mmo ...

Heh. You make a good point. And it's true, they can only fix a few things at a time. Given that every time they fix something they break two other things... Heh.

GL! Btw you'd asked on another post if Fairy Mastery was working. It is - it's on the main page from a few days ago, and I responded on that thread. GL

They REALLY need to add the tokens now...

The overflow adds weight???
How am I supposed to hold the components for Elm & Maple strong boxes and hold bank slots for the manufactures???????

SOE must be at the ganja again!
