There are a couple of quests in Willow Wood which I can't begin because the quest givers speak in a strange language. How do I get to understand what they are saying? Is this a skill I have to learn?

Go to the Scribe in the village and look for a scroll entitled "Fier'Dal language primer" or similar.

On buying it you will have learned the language.

They cost 12 silver

I always thought 12 SILVER for a newbie was a huge obstacle(sp?).
I mean by the time you have 12sp to burn on a language the guests you get are grey...
And they only pay 25-55cp... kinda hard to justify the expense.
I have started buying the languages because I can afford them now.
I make crude iron spikes that sell for 1sp each to vendors (I know if I made them higher quality I could sell them to players but it takes too much time for the money).
WHile this is fine for a level 14 toon a true newbie probably doens't have that kind of money...

OK here's the rub, I bought two langauge primers in WIllow Wood at a cost of 24s (!). A message came up each time "You have learnt the basics of xxxxxxx language", or something like that, but the NPCS STILL speak in weird tongues to me! Is this a bug? Or do I have to practice somehow?

Which NPC is it?

I'll swing by and see if I can understand them

It's Scribe Salania Broklily in Willow Woods and Geologist Quardifle in Baubleshire...at the moment.

Thanks a lot!

There are three Elvish languages, one for Wood, for Half and for High Elves. If I recall Ayr'dal, Koada'dal and Fier'dal, though those may be misspelling. There is also a Gnomish, Halasian [Barbarian] and Erudite language primer you can buy in the various outlying districtd og Qeynos
As you travel throughout the lands it is good have these languages as many npcs do have quests that require you to understand them. In beta I as able to sneak into Freeport and buy all the 'evil' languages like Ratonga but when my Dirge went there on Saturday [1-15-05] none of teh scribes would allow him to buy or sell. Disappointing.

Ok.

Sorry it took a few days but I finally swung by Willow Wood.

I Hailed Scribe Salinia Brooklily. She replied in heiroglyphs and I didn't understand a word

I bought her book Feir'Dal Language primer for 12s. "You have learned the basics of the Feir'Dal Language appeared at the top of the screen

I hailed her again and understood her every word. I am now off to slay some rats for her - instinctive for a Kerra anyway Smiley: smile

Conclusion - She's a Wood Elf
