Zoning destroyed my internetFollow

#1 Jan 10 2005 at 7:44 PM Rating: Decent
Me and my friends love to LAN party at my house. We regularly have 3 comps, sometimes make to 5 or 6. All run either EQ2 or Lineage2(My dad's game of choice).

For awhile we were working fine. Then things got...strange.

First one of our friends made a new character. And EVERY time this character loads into a zone - my internet goes down and I have to reboot my modem. This happens 100% of the time with this charcter.
At the time, no one else' character did such a thing. This does NOT affect them when their at home, only when in the LAN partys at my house.

Then it started happening to other characters. Now at anytime, seemingly randomly, when someone zones they freeze at the "Loading UI resources" and the Internet dies again. Reboot modem, game on. Once someone does it once, anytime they zone after that they will do it again 100% of the time UNTIL they reboot their machine.

The final straw: Now its gotten weirder. Anytime someone LEVELS the Internet goes down. I didnt beleive this at first when they told me(I was watching a movie) but it happened 3 times, so we made a new character to test it - lo and behold anytime a character levels on my network things go down.

Please, for the love of Powergaming Friends - someone tell me this is known and fixable?!

Normally, I would look at a post like this with skepticism. However, an issue happened last week with the other game I play. It seems that I was having some lost packet issues and my broadband cable modem went kaput. Couldn't get it working using the regular routine of turning off the modem and turning it back on again because I didn't know what happened. Found out from tech support that the modem can only handle so many lost packets till it resets. I had to turn the modem and my computer off. Switch the modem on for it to correct itself then turn my pc on.

Whack I tell you.

But anyway, I'm sorry I don't have any advice that could help you, but know that I understand the frustration.

Check out the Technical Help and Questions on the official forums. Just browsing the first several threads on the first page, I saw this link. Looks similar to what you are experiencing.

After the Big Patch, my game has CTD a few times. Before the Big Patch, the client hardly crashed.

Wow, talk about mixed feelings while leveling...

What kind of router are you using? Perhaps, with the patch, they moved some things around to different ports. That may be a bit far fetched (especially since you mention that you just have to reboot the modem; not the router), but make sure your firewall on your router is open to the ports that EQ2 needs.

I would tend to agree that it sounds like a problem due to packet loss. Do you have Cable or DSL? do you know how much throughput you have? 256k, 384k, 512k? You may just be overloading your connection. I would try taking 1 or 2 of the machines off and testing it again, if that fixes the problem, then you'll know what it is. If it doesn't, well then, I'm a loss
