Hi, I'm hoping this thread will be for comments and questions regarding what these new Specialized Training abilities actually do (and which ones are useless - which ones are good).

My little Sorcerer hasn't picked his yet - I'm still fretting over which is best (I don't want to make a dumb choice - it's permanent).

Sorc's get to choose between:

Atreba's Ethereal Bindings - a root that alleges to be fast casting but probably doesn't stack w/ other roots - it's use would be to have a backup root while the regular one is recycling. No idea of duration or recycle/recast, etc. I have no idea if this even works on higher lvl mobs - probably doesn't.

El'Arad's Shielding - power pool buff + other similar buffs (sorry I forgot the others) + combat proc that ups Power a bit. The proc might be nice, but I was warned by a lvl 33 Warlock that it won't stack w/ the Gift buff that all mages get - and that Gift is better in terms of the pool buff (but it doesn't have a proc - hard to tell what the proc is worth).

Tayil's Searing Orb - Heat dd then DoT, lowers Magic Resist, Heat resist and poison resist. I'm leaning toward this one - lowering resists was key in other mmo's I've played. This might have good uses up to lvl 50 (unless it's constantly resisted by higher level mobs, which is a likelihood...). No idea what the reset/recycle is - or how fast it is to cast.

Kazlo's Frigid Bolts - Cold DoT - area. No idea how fast it is to cast or the reset/recycle on it.

Any Sorcs have opinions or experiences w/ these pls? We'd all appreciate it, thanks in advance! And please, put any other Specialized Training comments or questions you have on this thread. GL all!

Well,

I have my opinion on this, but I am not sure if it is really the best practice.
When the Specialized training button shows up (the big + button) I keep in mind few things

If the list contains just attributes upgrades I try to use it to balance my status. I mean, as a ranger my main attribute is AGI, so the first 1 upgrade I spent in Agi, the 2nd one I spent in STR (to raise my dmg as a DPS).. from now on I am trying to balance other status (like POWER and HP)

If the list contains a mix between attributes upgrades and skills (magic or skill) I would stick with the attribute one. Skills can be usefull at the begining, but the get useless thru lvls, so I get the attributes upgrates that last for my character whole life.

If the list contains just skills and magic. Well think in what will suit better in you character. As ranger I try to get skills upgrades like better trackings, dot skills, debuff skills other than just pure high dmg.

Answering your question I would stick with this Heat dd and dot. In my opinion this is more usefull. You won't use root that much (unless you are in solo mode). Buffs procs? hmm don't think it suits your role in a group. Cold Area DD? well your enchanter will not llike it, since you will break his mezz.

Well, that's what I am doing with my character. Hope it helps you somehow.

I found out that the level 10 training buffs that we have been missing are pretty much just increases to existing techniques. As a warrior I chose Braksan's attack buff at level 10 which is an increase to wild swing. I had wild swing at Adept1 and the new attack I got blows wild swing away. The funny thing is when you use either one the recast delay goes for both. So if I use Braksan's attack and the delay is 10sec then I can't use Wild Swing for 10 secs either. Kinda wierd but I am happy to have such a nice upgrade. I believe the other upgrades were to Fighting Chance, Assault, and I can't remember the other one.

I think you meant Call to Arms instead of fighting chance (thats our HO). I used the Call to Arms upgrade since it helps prevent casting attacks. Im a guardian so I want the defensive stuff. It also uses the recast of 30seconds for Call to Arms.

with the new linking of spells, you may or may not be able to cast the root if the other one is refreshing.

my enchanter chose the shielding with the proc and power buff, and she successfully cast it and the other buffs she has (gotm, signet, mage shielding), and none overwrote, so, theoretically, they do stack. i didnt watch stats when she did it, though.

i choose differently for the different classes based on what each will be doing. my brawler (monk) doesn't focus on being the main tank, so all of his choices are in favour of agi and dps. he had 2 different choices that were hate builders, but he chose the extra attack.

it was late when i cycled through the toons to choose, so it's a bit fuzzy, or i'd list the other toons and what they chose. i'll try to figure em out and post again :x.

Interesting. So the Sorc's root spec. trning thing might just be a speed upgrade to his existing root spell?

If the shield/power proc does stack, and that warlock is wrong, that sounds good, too.

Was still wondering if any sorc/wiz/warlock has tried the one with the magic/heat/poison debuff? I'd be curious how often that is usable and what the recycle is. Thx.

Wow, either I'm crazy or they changed the definitions of the Specialized Training things today.

They must have changed them, because they are muuuuch better defined - very spelled out - like the Sorc's top one says it's a type of upgrade to the root spell we already have, adept 2 lvl, and faster casting. All of them are now defined like that.

Muuuuch better! Thanks, Sony, you did something right today. Kudos! Smiley: yippee

aye... and in the notes it says that they're meant to replace an existing ability as an upgrade, which was not mentioned before.

wonder if i get to choose again based on the new data... waiting for the servers to come back up atm.

Yeah, I wish they'd let us try em out a while before we have to lock down. It drives me NUTS to have to make a "permanent choice" based on no data.

This was a horrible feature of old EQ. From char creation - you had to distribute all these extra points into "abilitis" (Str, Int, Wis etc) - and with only the lamest of clues as to what did what. I bought a Prima guide (never again), which, if I remember correctly, said Shadow Knights used WISDOM to get mana (wrong - it's Int) - well, if it wasn't that, it was a spectacular error like that. And that wasn't the only one. A necro I used to team with told me he'd used the bulk of his extra points in CHA to get better merchant prices. And I met at least 3 druids who got so frustrated because they ran out of mana all the time - they'd only put like 5 or 10 pts into Wis and the rest into Sta and Str thinking they'd be meleeing a lot (druids and other casters stop meleeing around lvl 14 in old EQ).

Well, almost all Sorcs I talk to ingame say they have chosen the shield option. And that seems the most useful at higher levels, too. One chose the root, and he said it is noticeably faster casting - but he forgetst to use it. No one has taken the upgrades to Static Pulse or Lightning Storm. I'm interested in the Static Pulse upgrade cuz it has a Magic, Heat and POison debuff - which might be really useful later on - IF - this spell even casts on higher lvl mobs... but I have no data... so I'm stuck being forced to make a choice having no idea what is going to happen. Heh. Typical. I need to hurry up and choose, cuz I can't finish quests atm. I guess I'll see if the shielding boost is superceded by some new spell right away or not. And maybe it isn't that big a deal. These upgrades may only be meant to be useful for 10 lvls, anyway. GL all, and if you have info on these, pls let us know. Thx.

ok... looks like the abilities are *supposed* to be upgrades to existing, so they're linked as far as the casting timers go...

however... if the one you choose is a buff, it looks like it's stackable so far... the shielding stacked with magi shielding and all of the other buffs for an extra bit of power in the pool :D.

possible that any debuff abilities may stack as well... possibly any "over time" abilities that last longer than the cast recovery time.
