The power of the spoken word!Follow

#1 Jan 06 2005 at 3:43 PM Rating: Decent
Okay, I bet that there has already been a thread about this somewhere, I did my best to scour the boards for awhile and came up with nothing, so here it goes.

What are some of your best or worst experiences with the spoken dialogue in the game? Are there any particular NPC's that you love to hear babble on as you walk by? What about pronounciation?

I was doing the Priest --> Druid class quest in Qeynos and was taken aback when the Heirophant declared the name of Tunare, Mother of All, out loud.

That's NOT how you say it, I told myself. After 3 years of playing EQ and calling her (toon-ARE-a) and then hearing this blasphemer refer to her as (tun-AIR), it took a second for me to process that.

Then there's good ol' Blort in the Big Bend of Freeport. That zany Blort always asking people to ask about buying cutters and slicers in his remarkable Boston-sounding accent.

I want to KILL the bard in the Willow Wood with all of my inner being. "GATHER ROUND PEOPLE.....GATHER ROUND...I'll be warming up my voice in a few minutes." He's going to eat an Ice Comet from me one of these days if I have any say in it.

Who do you like hearing when walking through town, or what EQ revelations have dawned on you because of the voice overs we have?

I still cringe every time I hear
Qeynos (KEY-nos)

As I always thought of it as
Qeynos (quay-nos) like (lay-nose)

And I always thought of luclin like (luke-lynn)

yes the bard in the Willow Wood gets top billing. If only he gave a quest you could shut him up.

I did that to the vain idiot in Nettleville. Just do his darned quest and he never talks to you again.

And I have to worry why ALL the merchants have lost their ledgers?

I have always said "Keynos" for Qeynos. And was told it was because it is Sonyeq spelled backward.

Same here. I still like those pronunciations better too.

Ya, but if I'm not mistaken, wasn't Verant the owner of EQ for the longest time?

I always pronounced Luclin as "loose-lin."

It's hard to adjust.

I had the same trouble years ago getting together with other players to play Vampire:TM and Werewolf and deciding on how to pronounce things. Eventually they started printing phonetic spellings in their guides and I hated it. I despise being proven wrong.

I cant stand the Guard captain i Graystone who keeps stating that he "could indeed use <my> help, good adventurer!"

Problem is at 20 I know that quest is not worth doing. They should make it audible for a level range and them silence tham forever!

Haha, good thread!

I, personally, always pronounced Tunare as "tun-AIR" as well, so that one didn't surprise me. But I STILL can't get "Qeynos" right! After 5 years of calling it "KWAY-nos", even in phone conversations with friends, I just have a REAL hard time adjusting to "KEY-nos".

I too love Boomba :) I can't tell you how shocked and happy I was to see him standing his post at the gate in WFP. I LOVE it when he gets tired of talking to you and says, in his accent "Now PURCHASE A PICKLE!" :)

yar... kind of :).

sony interactive studios spun off to form 989 studios, which, after changing names a couple of times, became verant, after eq took off and became their primary product. the spin off company was still funded by sony. they originally intended to write console games.

verant was eventually reabsorbed by sony, and renamed sony online entertainment.

Come on guys!!! If we are playing a phantasy game, part of that is involving our selves into that same phantasy...
We ALL are refugees!! that means we ALL come from different places!! ha ha ha...That implies we are ALL strangers in the world (even if it is our own land) and you can expect different accents, languages, etc.
That is my humble opinnion.

I agree, KEYnos stinks. It's KAYnos or QUAYnos - anything but KEYnos.

And to anyone who snips "well doesn't SONY own Norrath?" - go to your bathroom mirror, look at your image, and watch your face as you say KEYnos a hundred times. The contortion involved makes you look like a huge, tight-jawed idiot, doesn't it? Peace! I'm not flaming - I mean it. Look in the mirror and say KEYnos. It's not pretty. Of course for me it never is... but we can't all be uncharismatic EvilGnomes. Smiley: drool2

The other gnome of EvilGnomes says it forced you to smile - forces you to enjoy all the caca they're throwing at us. Smiley: grin

And there is no nobility to KEYnos - it just plain sounds squirrelly. On the IoR that High Elf ambassor saying KEYnos over and over in that cupie-doll voice... made me wanna puke!

"Have you ever SEEN a gnoll before" - I LOLed the first time I heard that kid ... but the hundredth time... where's Cubert when you need him?

I kind of wish I hadn't done the Graystone Kerran's "Bah, where are all the darn fish?" quest - I liked him. But the "Drat, almost out of bait! You there! Can you fetch me some bait?" in that cigarette-hag-voice... scary. Smiley: eek

You know, the other EvilGnome just said, "It's scary when posting on the boards is more fun than playing the game." I've been thinking that for a couple of days - why am I posting so much instead of playing EQ2? And the answer, well, is pretty obvious....

omg... so that's why i've been avoiding that quest... i like the voice!

Thats the barbarian "Tacklemaster" who says that. The Kerran has a kind of upmarket drawl "Where are all the darned fish"

I do find that sometimes it was better when I couldn't understand them. There is a barb on the end of that pier who for ages has talked in heiroglyphs. I just learned "halasian" for the Bridge Keep thing and now I hear him whining about his line slipping.

No kidding! (except that I always said KAY-noss for Qeynos) But how can they pronounce Qey as Key? Just mind-boggling.

The lady at the dock in Willow Wood always amuses me. She says "May the winds of fortune be a cool breeze on your cheek." The more you hail her, and the more she says it, the more she sounds annoyed at you, as though her words were supposed to be a hint to leave.

Yeah, Quay-nos (Qeynos)is the way it always was for me.

I was also a loose-lin (Luclin) pronouncer.

I am starting to get used to it. I guess the auditory sense is more powerful than my reading (visual) sense.

oh yeah, and I love Skagga, she is a riot. I hope to get somemore of here sign quests. Or even if I could pull up to her booth and just chat with her for a while. You know, I could see us hooking up... you know... for the conversation obviously!

I also like the little taunts that the skellies do during battle. The fill me with equal urges to laugh and to give up and drop my weapons, hehe.

Nice thread. Very entertaining.

My number one favorite is when the scarecrows in Antonica yell at you in gibberish while you fight them. They say something that starts with words that sound like "SMELLY SOCKS!" It brings a smile to my face every time.

That's exactly what my little kids say when we play together. "Kill another scarecrow, Dad! We wanna hear him call you 'Smelly Socks!'" Smiley: lol

Just so you know you pronounce q without u words like a k not like "kw". Also I always thought Luclin was "loose-lin" also. BTW anyone heard an npc say Nagafen yet? I always pronouced it like "nag-UH-fen".
#20 Jan 15 2005 at 3:07 PM Rating: Decent
I kind of like the voices of the gnome chicks in baubleshire they sound like wicked witches when they talk.

And yes Gather round bard guy gets a stop and a rude gesture everytime I walk near him. Although he is a bard and some of the arrogant *** bards from eq is probably where they got the voice for him.

Gather round , gather round while I kite 100 mobs while afk and shoot bolts of lightning from my *****

Some more candidates:

Isaik Teech in Nettleville is annoying me a lot. To the extent that when I get the emote "Isaik Teech dislikes your presence" I now have a counter emote saying I dislike his.

And that snotty cow in South Qeynos. I only get it on my Half elf (obviously) but the "Your eyes show potential but one of your parent chose poorly in love" is going to get her punched so hard she'll need to buy toothpaste as a suppository
