umm... I don't know what to say except that I am indifferent in this subject. I played FFXI before and only played 2 jobs. This time with EQ2 there are so many combinations with races and jobs I figured I'd try more character. So far, i have 3 toons with 2 at lvl 21 and 1 at lvl 5. I can't see in the close future I'll make another toon though because I won't have time to play all of them.

The main problem is I don't think I'll ever need so many character slots because first of all, I don't like playing mage archetype; second I don't think I'll try all classes. For example I've a pally so I won't try classes like warrior or brawler because they are quite similar. Also I won't play every race either. I'd just pick the one race I like for the specific archetype. That means all I need is 3 slots really.

I don't mean everyone should play it my way. No. But my point is everyone has their own play style, so if you want more slots just tell SOE. Complaining here would take you nowhere. I think this thread has gone way too far. There is no need to change other's mind. If you need more slots, then tell SOE. If you're happy with 4 slots then that's good. Telling those who are happy that 4 slots aren't enough is futile because they don't need more than that. And telling those who're unhappy that you need no more than 4 slots are useless too because they DO need mroe than 4 slots for various reasons. So maybe people should agree to disagree here.

the reason soe gave 4 slots is because there are only 4 major archtypes in the game anyway the classes and subclasses are just slight variations on the same 4 archtypes 4 slots 4 archtypes i came from eq1 and must say eq2 isnt anywhere near the same game but still it seems a good start please no blue flamers on me because i still think it was wrong to do the station pass too blatant money grubbing there yes but still at the root of this discussion the reason only 4 slots is there are really only 4 archtypes so they thought 4 would cover it i guess
valhaen wolfheart 45th season barb shaman eq1 retired
valhaen wolfheart 10 th season barb preist sonn to be shaman eq2
mordrius 9th season human mage soon to be necro
vischall 9th season kerran scout soon to be ranger
bonecrusher 8th season ogre fighter soon to be shadow knigh

in eq1 i played only 1 but i have found if you try to keep up 1 of each archtype and keep them even with each other provides much more variation and fun in the game so i still can see the point of people wanting more slots i just hoped i could help clarify why only 4 to begin with

just my 3 plat on the subject

In Diablo 2, it's against the EULA to have more than 8 characters (or more than 1 account per cd-key). So technically, you are limited to 8 characters in that game.

So if they're just slight variations......... why have them at all ? We should just have fighters priests scouts and mages and call it a day.

The two shaman classes appear substantially different after I perused the spell lists in detail. The mystic is much more of a healer and buffer, and group player; while the defiler is a weakener and DOTter, with some healing thrown in; might be a good soloer. I'll never know for sure if I just play a single priest class - I can't even try it out because I can't make the selection until level 20 which takes a lot of time.

It's possible they have a good reason for this but I doubt that is it. The only explanation I can see is naked greed.

I will cancel my account at month-end over this issue, despite the fact that I find the gameplay quite a bit of fun. To the degree the forums represent the public's reaction to this issue, I make the depressing conclusion that nothing will change; and neither will they add additional slots via an expansion. My big issue is found wanting; too many people either are happy with four, or willing to pay extra / play on test for eight characters, or play on test with the all-access for 16. Or buy three all-access accounts for 24 like I suggested in the original post.

So I'll do what I should do in a capitalistic society and vote with my dollars, and not pay. It's all I can do. And if I come crawling back anyway, you can all laugh at me and tell me to suck it up and play a main character !

Now that is interesting. It must only apply to on-line gaming as I had about 16 characters eventually, only one of which ventured online.

It wasn't such a big deal either; your character files got stored both locally and on their servers, so if you got deleted on battlenet you could continue your character solo, or log back on at a future date using the local files.

That deals with closed battle.net play, not open battlenet or singleplayer. I had hundreds of singleplayer characters.

See, Diablo2 had so many choices for character creation.

EQ2 has one choice. By design, and necessity. They simply made it far too restrictive.

Has anyone actually asked Sony about this? Venting about it on here is all well and good, but you're not going to get an accurate answer from any of us as to why they chose to do this. This subject seems to hit close to home with a lot of people (me not being one of them, I suffer from an accute case of apathy). I'd like to see sony's official comment on this however I don't care enoguh about the issue to spend time trying to get an answer from them directly myself.

The Sony board thread - wade through it if you dare.

And Moorguard's comment :
Quote:
Of the four-character limit I will only say this: It is an issue that has been discussed a lot. Everyone involved in EverQuest II knows about it and understands that some players would like more character slots. Beyond that I have no comment. Starting new threads about this subject or giving feedback in game will not achieve a result that this thread did not.

If an when we have any additional information related to this matter, we will post it. At this time, the number character slots you receive with an EverQuest II subscription is four.

To my knowledge other than this post SOE has stayed silent on their reasons for the limit.

After reading that quote, man - I can't figure if it's arrogance or desperation I'm hearing. Or both. I mean, WoW has just pimp-slapped him big-time with their holiday sales (sold out, Mr. Moorgard - WoW offered unlimited character slots and sold out - your game did not - now that's not the only reason - but it's one of the big reasons - and in that it's part of SoE's spirit of parsimony and miserliness... it's a bigger part of it than u might realize). So Mr. Moorgard is either seriously in denial or ... well, what are the odds he still has a job in six months? Anyone?
