I keep both crushing and bashing up and use whatever you can get a pristine forged long sword will serve you well for a long time I don't really mess with two handers much. Aurora's mace of blessing I got for like 30 silver as a 1 hand basher lasted me for a long time. The apprentice hammer of the coldwind coast I think it was called was great at lower levels.

AT LOWER LEVELS YOUR NOT REALLY GOING TO NEED A SHEILD AND IT SEEMS EAISER GO 2 HANDED. BUT IN LATER LEVELS YOU ARE DEFINALTLY GOING TO WANT TO GET A SHEILD OR THE DAMAGE YOU TAKE IS TO GREAT.

A shield is equally effective at all levels, even low levels. I think it's like a 40% deflection bonus for round shields.

If you are tanking, I highly recommend using a one handed weapon, and a shield.

If you aren't tanking, use a two handed weapon for faster hits and more damage.

As of yet, I can tell no difference in effectiveness between slashing or crushing weapons. I would suggest keeping them both up, by carrying 2 weapons. A two handed sword, and a one handed hammer and round shield, for example. Though if you wanted you could go with a two handed hammer, and a one handed sword and shield. Either way works.

If you are going to be a Paldin then yes you will want a shield. I say this not only because of the defence, but the fact that Paladins get some moves that require you to have a shield. One of these moves is a very useful hate grabbing move. So 20 and on yes use shield. If you can find a good one around 15 I'd say start using them from then on.
