Do they really help? I've been working on my trade skills for 2 days now and still can't make pristine in some items. with or without the spells. besides not getting killed do they do any good? Perhaps I am missing it but they just don't seem to help

Yes,

Unless you are cooking in which the spells don't seem to work, I would say that the spells are fairly balanced.

I am a level 19 craftsman who has been specializing in making Maple Strong boxes, iron sheets, and planed maple. The spells available at that level are great and never have any problems making the items.

Your skills (not spells) also help in making the items. Fletching skill is now 95 and most of my other skills are cathcing up with the exception of artistry which seems to be broken.

Best way to use spells is to create 3 hotbars and seperate the various spells used for each cratfing station. Works for me!

Spells also help your skills raise up so keep casting them!

All the buffs are supposed to add to the numbers that float up.

For instance: (Keep in mind my examples are for tailoring)
A typical or normal Tick is -10/+50 that is -10 green bar and +50 to the blue bars progress.
A good tick is +0/+50
A critically good tick is +10/+100
A bad tick is -50/+0
A critical failure is -50/-100
Minus is bad, plus is good (disclaimer The numbers for the 2 bad ticks may be off, but the average good and critically good should be acurate)

I have a buff that subtracts 3 from duribility (green bar) and adds 24 to the progress (blue bar) When I use it an average tick is -13/+74

I have another buff that adds +10/+0 but subtracts form the chance of a successful tick by a "small" amount. That means I will have less critically good ticks and more bad ticks but the chance of this happening seems VERY small (unnoticable). An average tick with this buff is +0/+50 <-- notice not losing any durability

If I use both buffs My average tick is +7/+74.

I have a 3rd buff that adds +10/+0 but uses power. If I use this too often I will go OOM so I try not to use too much. An average tick with it is +0/+50

If I use all 3 on an average tick I get +17/+74
If I use all 3 on an critical failure tick I get -34/-74
If I use all 3 on an bad tick I get -34/+24
If I use all 3 on an critical success tick I get +27/+124

Successfully countering a reaction with the proper buff gives you an bonus of some type. Sometimes it seems a slight + to blue or Green, sometimes it is an increase chance at better ticks for 1-3 ticks. Sometimes it is nothing and sometimes a critical failure or bad ticks can happen on one of these ticks so it will look like you hosed yourself.

You didn't you had a better chance than if you had done nothing.

Failure to counter any reaction means you lose out on that bonus. Other than that and the damage you get for not countering the rare nothing else happens if you miss a counter. You can takle damage and still get a crit success on the same tick.
