Crusaders and the Axe skill?Follow

Quick question for those in the know. In the manual for the game, and on most sites, crusaders get the Axe skill. However, my Crusader currently does not have the ability to wield one. So, my question is does a Paladin (I'm almost there) get the ability to wield an Axe at some point, or was this taken away from us at the 11th hour?
