Strategy guide...worth it?Follow

#1 Dec 28 2004 at 3:18 PM Rating: Decent

Hi I was curious if anyone has picked up a strategy guide, and is it worth doing so. Normally I don't buy strategy guides, but since there are no hardcore faqs and many things in the game still are a mystery to most people I'm tempted. Some of the sites that I've visited are down as well.

What I'm looking for is:

What areas specific raw materials can be found (my packs are full with things that I can't use).

Recipies that I can look beforehand, so I don't go back and forth to the bank.

What exactly the certain combat skills are for

Before anyone flames me, I usually do research on the forums, but there is so much stuff that players just don't know the answer to yet.

the raw materials are random spawns in the zones in their respective tiers, but there are lists for the tiers here (under artisanry) and here.

try here (also has nice guides) and here and here (under recipes).

try here and herefor lists and descriptions of combat arts and spells, and surf the rest of those sites for hints on strategy.

in addition, maps can be found here and here(under maps) and here (under zones).

in answer to the question you actually asked :)... i havent seen the guide, because it's been selling out regularly round here... but i havent been desperate to pick it up due to the plethora of sites popping up with good information. i'll probably saunter into my local game shop this evening and see if they actually have one in stock :).

i'm not sure that the information in it will be up to date, but will post back when i find out.

Awesome bud, thanks for the info. I would rather not have to pick up a strategy guide, but info is rather scant on somethings. EQ-Artisans was pretty good, but they've been down for a bit.

If you have the cash to spare, the strategy guides are nice literature but they get outdated really fast for MMO games.
Information there may be accurate only for a certain period of time before the game gets an update and the book loses its value as a guide.
There are even some guides that have the unfortunate fate of being obsolete by the time they get published.

Prima's Guides (and I think the EQ2 Guide is Prima) have been, for me, a mixed bag.

As the poster above pointed out, they rapidly become outdated, especially this early in a game's life, because SoE is going to implement and/or fix a ton of content over the next few months. If all you need are maps, guides to resources, spell/skill lists and the like, you're better off checking out websites for that information because it's likely to be far more up to date than a static Guide will be.

I remember buying the Prima Guide for Dark Age of Camelot before I began playing the game. Turned out that quite a bit in the Guide was BETA information that never made it into the released game. That should've been caught prior to publication and corrected, but it slipped through. Who's to say Prima will be better here (although I did find Prima's EQ1 Guides to be better)?

I have the EQ II guide and it's one of the best that Prima have done. Worth getting, you can never have too much info Smiley: smile

I got it too. It's not bad, overall, but it will become outdated pretty quickly. Still, for a beginner, it's a nice reference to have.

What I'm interested about the strat guide, and this is hear say for me, is the lore and background information included. I've also heard that they give tips on choosing names? Like common themed conventions for Wood Elf names. Anyone with the guide can confirm this?

That's the main reason I'd get the guide. As far as game mechanics and quest info... meh, that's what these and the official forums are for. :D

Generally I never buy stats anymore, what with the incredible amount of information on the web, on such sites as this, and lesser ones.

I did buy the downloadable strat for Rome though, cause I had to study I was getting me fanny kicked so bad......

Tradeskill wise I always seem to get pointed to EQ Traders.com by people in game, not to take anything away from Alla of course.

ArcosKojin - Yes. All the things you mentioned are in there. You can find it via websites too, but it's handy sometimes to have them in book form for when you're not at your PC.

the prima guide is very good i have it and it has accelerated all my gameplay and characters and has some good lore too but to me the one of the best lore bits is the background and lore info i got with the collectors edition also has extra dvd with stuff on it and music from the game nice cloth map and posters among other things in it got it for christmas but again i beleive especially at the lower levels the prima guide is good especially for hand leading one through a lot of very helpful points and quest over 300 quest walkthroughs total or at least that is what it says but great maps of all zones for now even zones characters dont get to map so yes in my opinion it is a good deal

I don't normally like the Prima guides but the one for EQ2 is very good. The maps are beautiful and well detailed and have gotten me un-lost more than a few times so far! (The Bog comes to mind... I hate that place!)

Anyway, it's a nice reference guide, chock full of data and detail. I give it 2 thumbs up!

I agree that it is definately worth it. Watch out for the many typos though.

I really love the guide I don't think I could play as effectively without it.

It has all the racial traditions and training (not the new ones of course) listed as well as maps to most areas pre 30. The HO charts help too though they're not fully accurate.

I promise, no ranting here. But please understand that I hate Prima. Over the years I've found them to be incredibly sloppy bordering on awful. I actually wasted good money on their old eq guide, and it was full of outright errors (SK's use "wisdom" for mana pool - hah) and tons of blather. Imo Prima should be punished for their past sins. I will never ever buy anything from them again. You do what you want, though.

Note, the game changes way too fast for a book to be of much use, anyway. Again, buy it if you want, but you can get everything that's in it and more by snooping around online - and given that you have to prowl the sites to stay current, anyway...

But hey, unless you have a laptop and a wireless modem thingie in your house, you can't scan the internet for EQ info while you sit on the toilet - and you can read the Prima book while you sit on the toilet. Of course I'd suggest doing something else w/ the Prima book and the toilet, but I promised to be a good EvilGnome and not rant. So you will just have to guess! GL all!

Have you actually read the guide, Evilgnomes? I know that the info won't be ideal forever, but it's really pretty good for the early parts of the game.
