a Discrete MeetingFollow

Ok i'm going doing this quest to become a Dirge. I go invis and go into the main floor and ring the bell. No worries, until I come out of that little room with the first bell and 2 red mobs come out of nowhere and attack me. I looked up this quest and none of this stuff is helping me. What am I supposed to do? In the name of all that is holy, please help me.

I completed this quest last night at lvl 19.

First time, entered with sneak. Went to basement and examined pile of books by the Gnoll Negotiator. "You found nothing. Began exploring and moved upstairs. Opened a door and a bored guard (Red to me) saw me. I ran to the door, taking only 152 damage from one hit.

Second time, entered with sneak. Went to basement and examined pile of books by the Gnoll Negotiator. Found what I was sent to find.

I never dreamed of ringing the bells. I though that would draw attention to me.

I did my quest yesterday. I rang the bell on first floor, then top floor, then bottom floor. I got hit by a guard on the top floor for 109, but they never hit me again and ignored me after that one whack. Dunno if it's bugged, but it seemed just fine to me.
