Why does everyone look bald from far away?Follow

Actually, people don't just "look" bald from far away, I think that they really are bald. When you get close enough to the bald people, you can actually see their hair "pop" on.

I don't really know anything about gaming graphics, but I assume that the developers need to reduce the detail of far away objects to improve the speed that things can be drawn. I just think it's kinda funny that some designer thought about removing everyone's hair to reduce detail.

Oh well. Sorry for bothering you all with my inane blabbering. Now back to the game.

i believe that there are distance settings in your display options for character, mob, and environment detail. you should be able to set this to a higher number so that the details "pop" back on when the toons are further away.

iirc, there's also a setting for a maximum number of detailed toons you would like to view at once, so that if you are in a crowded zone, you won't get exponential lag.

It's because they are.

However they are also very self-conscious about it and slap on their toupee as soon as you get closer.

It's called LOD, or "level of detail".

Basically in order to reduce the workload on your graphics card everything and everyone is rendered with a very simple model when at max visual range. As they get closer they model is made more and more complex until it's all pretty and beautiful once they are really close.

The balding thing is just part of the LOD programming.

You can go into your graphics settings and change your LOD setting to make characters get more detailed faster or slower as they approach you.

Personally I never noticed the balding thing though until this last week or so, and then only when someone zones in right in front of me... For about 1 second they are bald, then they are normal again. I think some programming changes have made it more noticeable than it used to be.

some people are naked too I've noticed, I zoned right by someone who for a couple seconds had no pants at all, not even the ones you start with...I think it was an NPC though if I remember correctly
