Respect for the old guys.Follow

I am paying my respect to my elders.. for something as small as.. PROPER GRAMMAR! All this generation thinks of is typing fast.. what happened to the simple sophistication of spelling out the damn words!? I fear I am the last of a dying breed. All of my friends promote stupidity and illiteracy through their text. Hats off to you, Elders! You! Who keep the dream alive!

I try my best. I know I will mess up every once in a while, but hey at least I try. Also, feel free to correct my spelling and or grammar whenever possible. It's a dirty job but someone has to make sense out of my posts.
#3 Dec 18 2004 at 12:18 PM Rating: Decent
Haha, I'll try my hardest.

I know I mess up sometimes. I try not to judge or point out mistakes in grammar. We all slip up! But kudos to everyone who takes time out to fix their mistakes (I'm not one of them :P)

LOL, I sure did. As long as the post is understandable I really don't mind. I hate looking at a post that is a page long and has no breaks for paragraphs. I have seen those here before and tried to read one once. Never again.

Dood speak kinda gets on my nerves. Although, I am guilty of using it every once in a while. I like to think that I use it in a faceious manner but I'm finding it more and more adicting! Wow, that's the first time I actually admited that to myself. I'm scared.

On a side note, is that the correct spelling for faceious? If indeed it is, it's kinda cool that it has a,e,i,o,u all in a row.

Eheh, I try to type using full words instead of abbreviations like 'u' and 'plz'. I am especially not a fan of 'plz'. If someone is asking me to do something for them and is too lazy to even type out 'please', why should I help them to the fullest of my abilities?

But I also understand that people that use some of those abbreviations don't think anything remotely the same, and don't realize that some people consider it rude, or simply annoying. To them it's just a way to type a little bit faster. Probably the reason I don't use abbreviations like these, is because my typing speed is somewhere around 100 words a minute.

So usually I help them anyway, even though I am a bit annoyed. I'd probably be more upset with myself later if I didn't.

Also, I'm not an 'old guy'. I'm only 22. Though I guess to half the people playing, I'm still an old guy.

It's not so much the posts that have one paragraph block that bother me. It's the ones that have one paragraph with NO PERIODS BETWEEN SENTENCES. Not having a period is fine when you speak in one sentence at a time, like through tells and chat. But not when trying to communicate a lot of information at once.

AND ANOTHER THING, I CAN'T STAND WHEN PEOPLE TYPE IN ALL CAPS. I FEEL LIKE I HAVE TO SCREAM EVERYTHING THEY TYPE!

J/K don't get mad.

They feel that typing in caps makes their message more noticeable. Instead it usually results in people yelling at them to turn off their caps.

Im swedish so my grammar and spelling might suck but imo its just pure stupidity to try and keep old grammar and spellings.
Languages are something that is alive. Trying to keep everything 'the way it used to be' is just STUPID.
dont you like phones? computers? EQ? microwaves? Those are new things just as many new efficient words and abbrivations.
Whats wrong with being efficient?

And they yell at them IN CAPS no less. Thus the cycle is never broken. We are after all only the servants of the caps.

And it still has the vowels all in a row! Man the fact that I am amazed by this is disturbing.

Well, ummmm, let's see. Do I have anything better to do that take my time typing posts today and actually expressing myself fully?

Hmmmm, I could play eq2......wait! NO! The servers are still DOWN!!!! LOL

English is a living language, but let's face it, some of this stuff is not change from growth but from pure laziness. The "gotta have it RIGHT NOW" generation, I call it.

I got 20 years on the guy that said he's 22 (you guys DON'T have to spread that one around lol), I've seen a lot of change to the English language, but some things aren't for the better. :)

Blast away!

Somehow I highly doubt computer 'shorthand' would be accepted at my place of work, or in anything formal for that matter.

Changes in technology are completely different than changes in language. Apples and oranges. Besides, I don't think I would ever consider 'u' a 'new efficient word'.

I'm not saying language shouldn't change, but the way people are trying to change it is nonsensical. Using 'plz' instead of 'please'? Congratulations, you saved three keystrokes and 0.2 seconds of your life.

Efficient possibly for someone who isn't native to English language. However, I know my stepsons use it cause they can't spell worth a darn, and don't want to look stupid. And don't feel they should have to learn how to spell due to spellcheck on a computer. <sigh> losing battle cause I only see em twice a month.

Anywho, it's a philosophical (spelling? LOL) difference that doesn't really matter in the long run, just annoying when I have to ask someone what the HECK they are talking about.

'plz' - saves three keystrokes
'thx' - also saves three keystrokes

'imo' - saves ten keystrokes including spaces
'imho' - saves sixteen keystrokes including spaces

The last two are examples of being efficient. The first two are lazy. Not ALL abbreviations are bad.

This post imo reaks of narrowmind.
I work as a engineer in the forrest industry and write mails in both english and swedish. In an offical mail I wouldnt write 'u' instead of 'you' either.. Not today.. But im pretty confident that in 10 mby 15 years I can do that without norrowminded people will look down at me.
The last year I have gotten a few officiall mails with smileys in them.. I would never do that today but still some openminded people do and I hope I can some day too..

This is also a norrowminded and actually stupid post.. Not trying to be mean or sum but you try and state this as a fact when really its just nothing except an oppinion.

I was actually about to post something about that. Everything people are saying here is pretty much just our opinions, so don't take too much stock in all of it eheh. We're just here to have a friendly discussion about this sort of stuff.

It's not like what we say here will change the fate of the english language or anything.
