Free month is done....so is this gameFollow

#1 Dec 16 2004 at 12:05 PM Rating: Sub-Default
Well, my free month is up....I love the way this game looks! it's awesome, nothing else out there looks quite as good! Saddly, graphics don't make a "fun" game. I had been waiting patiently for many....many months. I had no interest in any other mmorpg....eq2 was going to be "the" game! well, I was quite impressed when i started playing. soon after the newness wore off, i realized that the game was missing something very important......FUN. it just isn't very fun.....at all. more like a frustrating job. while i do enjoy grouping, I also enjoy solo content and don't want to rely on other to do everything! I want to feel like i earned some of my rewards all by myself. way too many "hardcore....i'm better than you, your wasting my time, don't ask for help you dumb noob" jerks in this game. All i had hoped this game would be.....it is not. I purchased WOW, which i never had any plans of playing....ever. I had been forced into it because i love mmorpg's. Well, it doesn't look as nice. I love eq2's realistic graphics far better than the fantasy cartoony wow graphics.....but i can deal.....it doesn't look bad at all, I just prefer eq2's look. But as far as fun goes!!!! the got it just right......this game is fun! the reason I play games in the first place. Fun to do quests, fun to kill creature, fun to have a pet that is actually useful! nice to see polite and helpfull people playing the game! this game is the real deal! after and expansion pack or 2 when they drasticly improve eq2's fun factor, i will play again. just letting ya all know that the other option out there for mmorpg's got a 9.5 compared to eq2's 7.8 for a reason! FUN

Thank you so much for telling me this game is done. I was planning on playing it for awhile as I'm really enjoying it, but your insightful post has saved me lots of time and money. I'll run out and get WoW right now after I quit my RL job since it's boring (today.) I can feel the compelling pull of games forcing me to play them even as I type.

Well maybe your mommy will be nice to you and get you another 30-day pass to continue playing!!!

Or maybe even Santa Claus.....

But only if you haven't been naughty.

I'm enjoying EQ2 FAR FAR more.. not sure what game you're playing...

notice the sig.. 4 characters.. one is brand new.. the rest.. solo with the occassional group or duo and that was with people I know IRL, we didn't HAVE to group.. I easily have 80% solo play time on all my characters... my summoner especially is turning out to be a soloing monster.. doing far better than my predator or sorcerer in solo play.. but I can solo pretty effectively with those two as well. So I think what the OP wants EASY solo for HIGH XP.

way too many "hardcore....i'm better than you, your wasting my time, don't ask for help you dumb noob" jerks in this game.

again I must ask, what game are you playing? I was in the ocean solo'ing (yes that solo thing) some octopai for a quest and not finding many.. but I did find a cave.. asked in /ooc about it.. and got many helpful replies about what it was.. I thanked them and said "thanks for the info, back to octopai hunting".. at which time I was told in /ooc where the mob I wanted could be more easily found. I didn't ASK for the information.. and was quite content to search and figure it out myself.. again I thanked them, hopped a griffon and my quest was done far sooner.

I was also under the impression that the community was less than talkative in EQ2 but amazingly enough, if you talk to people kindly, they talk back kindly.. now I've learned something new.

Quote:
fun to have a pet that is actually useful!

now on this I have to just laugh. my App II level scarab can take down Even Match "solo" mobs on it's own.. and can effectively tank Yellows and Double Triangle Green "group" mobs.. that's VERY useful IMO, and I'm GREATLY looking forward to getting my Adept 1 book.

now granted.. my little character is delightfully 16th level.. but if the pace and scaling I've experienced in the past is any indication of the future, then for the way I do things.. EQ2 is darn near perfect.

Well thank you so much for announcing to all of us the existance of WoW. Before you I had never heard of it, and now that I know it has your expert ranting endorsement I'm gonna go right out and buy 2 copies, one for me and one for you. And all the "holes" you have pointed out are completely well thought out and rational. Thank you so much, I'll stick with EQ2.

Why do people bother to post this stuff. I for one, and I am sure many others, don't care if you plan to continue to play EQ2 or not. The people that enjoy the game will stay, the people that don't will not. So please post on the WoW site if that makes you feel better.

This is a generalization, and I am sure that there are many old WoW players out there that do not fit this mold. BUT, from what I have so far from these types, I would much rather they go back to other games and free up some bandwidth on my server.

In the groups I have had so far, it is the old EQ players who are helpful, talkative, and knowledgable about game play and group dynamics. Why? Because they learned how to play MMORPGs in a cooperative, group format. They have just transferred that skill set to a new game.

By comparison, most (not all, most) non-EQ vets (WoW, DAoC, SWG, take your pick) I have encountered grab too much aggro, don't wait for med, drop groups as soon as they have the drop they need, port out and leave groups deep in a zone without a critical class (like a healer) and engage in what I consider to be other selfish, self-centered behavior. Whats worse is they don't care and will not listen to the advice of group members who are not racking up XP debt for everyone.

I don't think its because they're bad people. I think its because that's the gaming culture they grew up on. They soloed quickly all the way through other games and expect to do it here too. I (and many other EQ vets I have spoken to) really wish they would either learn to play this game the way it was meant to be played, or do what the OP is doing and move on. If you want to solo quickly up to level 50, then yeah...you made the right call going to WoW.

Now go...quickly...the rest of you and leave us in peace.

/rant off

P.S. sorry I sort of hijacked this thread, but this has been buggin me for a while. Besides - what does the OP care? he's leaving anyway.

ok im a lvl 23 SK right now, and i feel the same way. the game looks good, but there is something missing. i dont think i will renew my accout either. havent made up my mind yet but you have to admin the game is lacking greatly... the fun facter does not even out with the tedium factor. im sure i will continue on but dude if some one is leaving i more then understand why... right now the game is not worth the price, in either time or money

Creating this thread was rather pointless. What did you expect us to do? Fall to our knees and beg you to stay? Come on...

First of all if you have an attitude with EQII players then you will loath WoW, it has that *battle.net survival of the fittest* attitude that everybody in Diablo II had. Take what you want before somebody else gets it. I've played both games and from what you said I don't think WoW will hold your interest very long. Once I realized it was an MMORPG designed for 12 year olds I uninstalled it before waiting for my subscription to end.

But hey, best of luck to you.
#11 Dec 16 2004 at 1:36 PM Rating: Excellent
I'm sorry that neither of you are having fun... my experience has been much different.

I can't imagine what you are talking about as far as not being able to solo goes... I play about 95% of my playtime solo. If I come up on a quest that requires I tackle a group of "Group" conned enemies that I can't take at the time, I shelve it for a couple levels and go back when they are green. Often I can take them easily.

I don't understand how it could feel like a "job" either... Killing monster after monster to grind up a chart of numbers is joblike. Running quests that, so far, have ranged from decent to downright cool with good rewards doesn't seem like a job to me. Of course, to each their own.

No, I'm sorry... I don't "have to admit" that anything was left out. Are there things I might have done differently if I'd designed the game? Yes, probably so... but then I've YET to play a game where everything about it was literally perfect. Not one. Overall, however, they have designed (IMHO) a masterpiece of graphic and mechanical software.

Ah well... good luck to you (or you both, if you leave, Death) and I hope you find what you enjoy...

I and hope you didn't seriously post this here, on an EQ2 fanboard, looking for sympathy... in the realm of EQ players (and most MMOS for that matter) we have a saying for the sentiment we feel when people rant and go...

"Can I have your stuff?"
#12 Dec 16 2004 at 1:40 PM Rating: Good
Fun factor whats that? Is it some multiple in the game code somewhere that somehow gathers information from your genetic code and creates a new number thus effecting how much you enjoy the game? Fun factor pah. And tedious? The only thing that I have found tedious so far is crafting all the componants needed for a final product, but even though it's tedious I tend to have fun untill some fluke error occurs and no matter how many tradeskills I use I end up with a normal product instead of a pristine. If I didn't want the tediousness I'd prolly not be a pristine wh@#$. Anywho good luck with WoW. And to all those that plan on leaving, at least hand off your equipment and money to some new character running through the street at random. Not all in one place now, spread the cheer.

for those of you said "no fun" in EQ II and wanna go play WoW. I will see you in EQ II again in half a year(or less).

Emorez hit the nail on the head. Judging from the fact that FoH went straight to WoW, and then bragged about it and bullied posters' opinions on the Blizzard boards, as if they would dictate how the rest of the EQLive populace would follow; proves that the 'L33t B4ttle.n3t' mindset will rule WoW.

Face it, a game that requires patience, and player interaction, will always appeal more to adults than the teen crowd.

In addition, I agree with other posters. Other than the random child in Antonica, the playerbase of EQ2 (on Lucan anyway) has been far more mature than the playerbase on EQLive. Fast respawns, instances, etc, that make competition less of an issue, has made people more friendly to each other and more willing to help others.

So...good riddance to another person sucking up our bandwidth. You're not going to be changing any minds here.

I always find it funny that people who are quitting this game come here and post about how it's not "fun".

Meanwhile most of their posts describe things that I haven't experienced.

For instance, some say they don't want to rely on others for everything.... And yet I can solo quite well anytime I want and can get many nice pieces of equipment solo or grouped (Just sometimes have to wait a couple levels to get it solo compared to grouped).

Some say people are rude. I haven't run into any rudeness (on the other hand I don't ask many people in the game for help, I mostly look up online resources for help if I can't figure it out on my own, which I usually can.)

Some say they can't get in the game and just play for 15 minutes or an hour or 2 hours... They must get on for hours at a time to get anywhere. If I have only half an hour to play in EQ2 I can do tons of different things... I can XP on solo yellow or below mobs or on green group mobs. I can work on one of the 40 quests I have. I can harvest. I can make stuff with tradeskills. I can setup as a merchant. I can go shopping. I can go look for more quests. I can find a group that just needs to kill a few more things and help them out. I can explore. I can talk to people. I can practice my swimming....
I am sure there is even more but I gotta go soon so I will move on.

Anyway, my point is that most people who think this game isn't fun and quit were playing without an understanding of how the game is meant to be played. They were approaching it from the wrong point of view and thus guranteeing a lack of enjoyment.

Well, my two cents, for what it's worth...

I come from DAoC. Never played EQ1 or WoW or any other MMORPG. I played DAoC for over a year and enjoyed it immensely. When I picked up EQ2 I was ready for a change and brought all of my enthusiasm over to the new game.

I have played it a lot in the past month and have gotten to the point in adventuring AND in crafting where I can glimpse the demarcation point between fun and grind.

However, since I can see that point it is now my responsibility not to pass it! I am in control of my game experience, not the game! It will be fun as long as I let it be fun. Whenever I get bored going solo, I group. Whenever groups are dragging me down (usually because of poor communication) I go solo. When I get tired of adventuring, I craft. When crafting gets tedious, I go solo.... and on and on and on...

Above all, however, I try to establish relationships with people. I play on Lucan D'Lere and try very hard to roleplay everything! You think Blue 2-up mobs are hard, try communicating when you are a poor typist at best! <lol>

So, WoW, EQ2, DAoC, it makes no difference. Take some responsibility for your own pleasure- no matter what that is- and go have fun. It's your life...

i agree with the fact that playing with other everquest 1 players is better then other mmorpgs. , they stick it out till the group is done.
i also like playing with first time plays to the mmorpgs. they are just like me when i first started playing asherons call so many years ago. and playing eq1 a year ago.
they ask what they should do. when i join a group as a priest type class. i ask if i am main healer. or secondary. i ask if i should help kill end game if all healths are ok. or if i'm out of power.

i would love to see a eq 1, and eq 2 high level vets guide to grouping roles for all classes on the side bar menus here. and in the eq2 links on the game page.

we need to let all who play and intend to continue to play how to group and play well with others.

oh and for those guys who leave as soon as they get there drop or lvl. they might just be IGE workers getting lvls and money for real life cash.

someone once said there should be a post to post names and servers of these guys when you really think they are ige. or if their just bad players, just so we know who not to play with.

hmm i'm getting mad again. i have to stop talking about ige... i hate them. they kill games.
i am guilty of buying from them. i had such issues with lvling in eq1 so i bought money and a high lvl character. i lvl with ease now and have almost the best items that a lvl 50 could have on my lvl 15 characters. ige ruined eq 1 for me. it made it to easy for me. i got so board.
i just thank god eq 2 came out just as i started to quit eq 1.
only good news, is i prepaid for a year on 2 of my accounts. so to pay for eq 2 it's only and extra $5.00 a month.

please all never buy anything for ingame. it will take away the adventure. not that grinding is fun. but we have a good tradeskill system. plus quests. i made 2 gold yesterday from 20 silver and 1 hour of gathering low items.

i do kinda wish i could trade my eq 1 plat for eq 2 gold though through sony only. like an enharitance. "can't spell that well"
but to take money from one high lvl eq1 character and give to one eq 2 characters who would have to have the same lastname. making us get to lvl 20 first before we could get the family fortune. i only say this i i have a ton of eq 1 money i think about 2 million plat worth. i would love to trade it for 20 plat eq 2 money maby.
on second thought. no. i'll just play and enjoy, this game is ment to be played for years not weeks. like so many have to lvl lvl lvl.

I'd just like to point out one thing (because I'm tired of arguing all these points), and that is that people who say there is no solo content in this game must be lunatics. It's the only explanation that makes any sense.

No, you can't solo *every* mob in the game (and you're in for a shock if you think you're going to solo *every* mob in WoW), but there is more solo content in this game than EQ1 ever hoped to have.

That is all.

As far as a guide to grouping goes, I supposed I could write one. The only problem is- at this point a lot of the tactics that would be applicable in EQ2 coming from EQ1 will almost be guesswork. Sure there are main generic roles to fill. There are generic ways to fill them, but the combat mechanics are, while similar, very different than in EQ1.

It's hard to pinpoint what it is, but let me see if I can whip out some similarities, differences and possible situational tactics. If people like it I'll work on rewriting it with more detail.

I know I should start a new thread for this, but wtf this thread is useless so why take up more space due to a whim. =)

--------------------------------------
Deykann's Suxguide to Grouping
--------------------------------------

Groups have multiple base roles that need to be filled. Keeping in mind that I am currently at the time of writing only a level 21 ShadowKnight, here is what I have seen so far.

The main roles in a group should be divided into 4 groups. Tanks, DPS (Damage Per Second, EQ1 term for any primary damage dealer), Damage Mitigation (healers, or anyone that can offset damage via buffs, runes, heals, etc), Crowd Control. In EverQuest (1) we saw similar groupings: Tanks, DPS, Healer, Buffer, Crowd Control. I have combined Healer and Buffer into one group as EQ2 has expanded the usefullness of healer into a base class instead of a master healer (cleric) and 2 or 3 sub-par healers (druid, shaman, beastlord).

In EQ2 we see the people that make up the Tank class as the people that started with a base of Fighter. In a group these are your meat-flavored shields. They absorb damage so you don't have to. If you are a tank the last thing you should be worrying about is how much damage you do. While high damage is good, that is NOT your role. You are supposed to take damage so other people can use their high damage abilities.

Priorities for a Tank:
1) Hold Aggro
2) AC and HP, nothing else matters.

If you don't hold aggro, you die. You die because the healer is usually the next in line to get aggro and when he/she dies who is left to keep you from dropping? Noone. Beyond keeping aggro, you need to have your AC and HP as high as you can possibly afford to get it. If you can't absorb the damage then you will die and so will the rest of the group.

Moving on to healers next. A healers first and foremost concern is the Tank. You keep that person alive at ALL COSTS. If the Tank drops, you are next. Forget nukes, unless tactics call for mass nuking and DPS over anything else. In 98% of all cases you are to be healing. I have not played an EQ2 healer, but in EQ1 a healer avoided aggro at the beginning of fights (the most crucial time) by casting a low aggro "heal over time" (HOT) on the main tank. This simple cast will keep the tank alive for you to get a stronger heal off. It also gives them time to get aggro efficiently. After assuring the tank is in good condition, and only when he/she has controlable health, THEN you may worry about group heals or spot healing one of the other group members. They should never have the focus of the enemy so if they get whacked once or twice it's not going to kill them.

DPS classes, usually of the scout sub-type, rangers, rogues, bards and also mage sub-types are the stuff DPS classes are made from. You deal damage, that is your job. Forget anything else (unless you are designated to do a specific alterior job). First on your list DISH IT OUT. Even if you can't take it - give the mobs hell. It is your primary job to see the mobs die. You need to be careful however, as you do not want the attention of a mob. If necessary, space your attacks out some. This requires a bit of trial and error. If you are in a group and are spamming your most powerfull spells/abilities and you are consistantly gaining aggro from the mob that the tank is trying to hold then you are overdoing it. You need to find the balance where the mob dies fast and you stay unhurt.

Damage mitigation classes I saved for last for a reason. The reason being is that they can fall into any of the above groups. Some fighter sub-types have nice damage mitigation spells. Some scout sub-types also have important abilities to lessen enemy damage output, as do priests and mages. This is something to be decided when a group is formed. Who should do what to ensure the damage output of mobs is lowered. Shaman have, throughout EQ1, been a wonderful group addition due to their slows and hastes as well as straight stat buffs. This, in a small way, carries over to EQ2, however mroe classes have some equally usefull spells and abilities. Enchanters were also a very bigg buffing class - as were clerics and druids, and let us not forget the bards.

To close this up quickly, every class is usefull to a group, it's just a matter of figuring out what you need to be doing and sticking to that. DO NOT TRY TO DO SOMEONE ELSES JOB... YOU WILL DIE, AND SO WILL THE GROUP.

--------------------------------------

Ok, let me know if you guys like that and I will rewrite it a little cleaner and with some further information and tactic concepts. I only scratched the surface with that, but it SHOULD help a few people not used to EQ play-styles.

far more dissappointed people than happy customers....we have all read the posts......sony gets an A for effort but a C- for the final product. And to the person who says they will see us playing eq2 again in a couple months.....i hope so, that means that they have taken the advice of the customers and changed the game into a fun experience instead of the aggravation that it is presently.....fan boys dont take criticism well jeeeez

OMG -- Please stop and post on some other site. No one cares about your opinion. If you hate it so much go elswhere. People read these boards for useful game info, not for useless game-bashing posts. Personally I could care less if you ever come back to the game.

GXM, I thought your post was very helpful -- for newcomers and us old eq1 players. Could you start a new thread though so we don't have to keep reading the stupid posts on how the game sucks. Thanks.

Three things:

1) the game is VERY new. It's not going to have ********* of everything right from the start. Those will come with updates and expansions, but it seems some people don't have patience at all. You don't release everything in a game right away, because then in 6 months, there's nothing left and your Dev team hasn't even gotten their drawing board up for an expansion. It's a new game people, there's much more to be added within the coming months and years!

2) WoW is not a "bad" game. It's different. If you enjoy it more, great, go play it.... but I'm -with all my patience- getting a bit irked by these "Ok EQ2 is not Fun Goodbye" posts. You don't have to like it, but....why not leave the rest of us alone to play what we enjoy, and you go play what you like? We've seen about 2 billion of these posts and they all say the same thing. We get it already.

3) I personally am having loads of fun. Yes, the game is buggy. Really buggy...probably should have stayed in beta another couple of months, really. (Kind of feels like I'm in beta lol) but sometimes even the bugs add to the amusement. There are a few jerks floating around here and there, but I've made friends already on the game and have a few IRL friends playing with me - this makes the game MUCH more fun IMHO. There's so many places I haven't been and tons of quests I haven't done, so I'm not bored. Nor do I feel it's "lacking" anything. In fact, it feels like a much "richer" game than the one I just came from ( you all know what one that is by now, lol).
#24 Dec 16 2004 at 5:02 PM Rating: Good
which is why I don't listen to hype.. RARE is the game that truly lives up to it's hype in every way shape or form... I love Halo2 but I can quickly point out hype busting flaws, still an awesome game that lives up to what "I" wanted to see from the game and not what I heard from the Hyped-up masses.

I check out screen shots to see if it is visually appealing.. if it is, then I'll take the extra time to investigate the claims of the developers. If those claims are something I think I would enjoy I'll check it for myself to see if the game lives up to those claims and my personally created expectations when it goes live..

so far with the exception of the merchant system of selling items, the game has done up to this point everything that I read about that I thought were good points for a MMO.. particularly after my experience in another MMO for a year I knew what I didn't want to see. and I knew about the merchant selling system going into it.. and accept it as the only major flaw for me, but since I'm not an avid trade-skiller.. it has no effect on my bottom line, which is simply this.

EverQuest2 is what I expected and is fun to me.

however, it's not to you... so I wish you luck finding something you enjoy.. be it WoW, CoH, or future MMO's such as D&D Online or MEO (Middle Earth Online).
#25 Dec 16 2004 at 5:09 PM Rating: Decent
There is bashing the game, which seems to be most of the posts going along with this, and then there is reviews and proper criticism. The difference is, if you were to read a copy of your favorite videogame magazine, or go to your favorite site that reviews games, and all that person did to sum up the game is say, "This blows, it's for noobs, WoW pwnz this ****, rawr!" Then you will prolly laugh, or go burn the magazine you read that in.

What we as a community need to do is, just rate down boobs who make posts like this, and just NOT respond.

And to dinks who post senseless boob talk like this, quit it. No one cares, will care, or should care about your smelly doofus opinion. Want to know why? Because we have read the same thing 800 billion times already.

Sorry for being a little bold, but I for one am definetly sick of having to see this kind of posted responded to so much. At first I was just going to ignore, but I figure I might as well put in my 2 cents while I watch some TV.

To add, I'm not a huge EQ fan boy, nor will I ever be. I'm currently playing EQ2, but I'm getting WoW soon, to see if it lived up to it's hype at all. As a person who plays game for fun, I'd be a fool to not try both EQ2 and WoW, which have great things going for each.

=)

The thread starter actually makes a really good point - is the game FUN or more like WORK? You can say "it's what you make of it", but hey, reality check - you have to go with what they give you to try to make fun.

I've been trying to find fun in this game. I'm still finding stuff to do, but ... I'm wondering how long I'll stay. Like the poster said and like I've been saying, once the novelty wears off, what will this game really offer?

Soloing had gotten just plain boring. I can either kill something or I can't. There is no "gray zone" of challenge - and I'm not given enough (this is very important) *variety of tactics* to make it challenging - to make me wonder "hm, what if I open the fight this way instead?" It just ain't there.

I know some of you feel you must defend this game and Sony to the death (hi Miaa - we cross swords in here a lot, don't we?). Let me say something that might help. Be a fan of the *game* and not of Sony. Sony needs to be pimp-slapped, hard and often. It's the only thing that keeps them sane. And listen, you have every right to question someone who is unfairly slamming the game in here. However, a lot of us keep asking "for getting so much so right, how could they have gotten so much so wrong?" And you Sony-defenders, this question isn't going to go away just because you want it to. Why? Because it is *true*.

The good news is they can fix a lot of what's wrong. They can lock nodes when you start, they can let you sell some other way than being logged in and not playing, they can flesh out solo encounters. They can add a little more variety and color to the quests (there is a monotony to 90% of them). They can do a lot to fix the myriad of small-potato issues. The thing that has me worried is, starting with us all on such a tight leash in terms of adventuring, can they ever "loosen up" and let us actually have some interesting tactics to use - a little variety? That remains to be seen.

I mean hell, if they have to do something as stupid as making certian zones where kiting works just to give us a little variety (you can go there or not depending on how u like to play) - and I know, here come the howls - some of you are so dead set against any form of kiting... but hell, people, stop being so closed minded. You can have the game you want, and we can, too. We can share this - IF - Sony will wake up to the fact that in their current "take" on this game they have EXCLUDED a whole lot of us. We aren't a handful of whiners here as some of you love to characterize us, those of you who loyally defend Sony to the death. We are a substantial # of players. And we are depressed as all sh*t. Cuz the trend of MMO's has spelled death to what we love. Death.
