memory leak and user interventionFollow

I was wondering what people are doing to combat the performance issues stemming from the memory leak in eq2 code. From my observations, it gets worse the longer you play, and zoning between city zones seems to exacerbate the problem.

At times, it would get so bad that the time it takes to zone will go from a normal average of 1.2 min to almost 5 minutes.

In order to deal with this issue, I usually restart my comp.

I wonder if there is a better way to free up memory w/o a reboot.

I am no expert on this, but was wondering if there is a way to do this w/o reboot.

I have decent hardware, amd 2500 (1.86ghz) 512MB PC-3200 dual chan, 9800pro 128mb, 2gb-3gb total of virtual memory and I defrag weekly

And/Or, if you got the cash, another 512 stick of RAM will make you a worry free goblin. ^^

Yes. the minimum ram for this game is 1gig. dont listen to the box. 512 runs like c-r-a-p

He cant add a stick. Dual channel 3200 has to be added in pairs. I have the same ram on my Dell

Well, he could get 2 sticks of 256 (which is what I did)...

Perhaps I should've just said "get an extra 512MB of RAM". *shrug*

Perhaps you should have, but then the literalist idiots of the world would have nothing to complain about. Semantics are obviously more important than useful information.

I have two sticks of dual channel and one stick normal, but at least one set has to be dual channel for that set up.

Ive noticed no loss in performance, Ive played for eight hours nonstop and not had any problems. I zone in about 15-20 seconds. I play in very high quality and can even push it to extreme if i wanted to. Sounds to me like most the ppl who are having bad performance are running out of date hardware.

You definalty need 1 gig of ram ;)

This memory leak problem effects some people and not others it seems. I run my main on a p4 3.2GHz with a 6800gt and 2gigs of ram on an abit IS7 and it hits me very often. I have to reboot to fix the problem as well. I also have an athlon 64 system with a 9800np and 1gig of ram, that system runs just fine and never has the memory leak problem. Oddly, other people who have this problem have it on athlon 64 systems, on systems with radeon 9800s, etc etc. so the components involved dont seem to be the culprit. Quite honestly, I bought the 6800gt as an upgrade to a 9800pro in order to improve performance in THIS game specifically and have been very disappointed. It didnt improve jack. I also added the second gig of memory for the same reason, once again, it didnt improve jack. The game IS very demanding at high settings, but I am playing both machines at the same settings for comparisons sake and the machine with teh 9800 in it still runs better, it may not be capable of looking as pretty if I up some settings, but it runs smoothly with no stuttering or jerkiness. The jerkiness on my main box gets worse and worse with the memory leak problem until I have to reboot.
It will run prime95 forever. It kicks the other machines *** in any other game or benchmark, it just runs EQ2 like crap. I tried memscrubber or some such (not sure about the program name at this point) and had to remove it due to the game crashes it caused. I have no answers... I'b been living with it.

Memory leak is definitely RAM related. I have a 1.7 processor P4 but 750 RAM and don't have much of a memory leak. 750 RAM plus is all you need for zoning fast and avoiding the meory leak for the most part.

I have 768 RAM on my comp and my fiance has 1gig and both of us have to relog after extended playing times, a gig of RAM is not the solution to every problem.

What graphic detail level do you play on?

I dont claim to be an expert and my sugestions may not do a darn thing for you, but here it goes anyway:

Sometimes when systems begin to run poorly it is a heat problem. simply adding in an extra cooling fan can do the trick. Don't let what seems to be a memory leak fool you sometimes it is just a symptom not the problem. When it gets hot in there crazy things can happen, these newer video cards and the demands of the newer games do create more heat. If it is impossible to add an extra cooling fan you can open the case and point a fan in there, though I dont recommend this, many bad things can happen, blowing extra dust in there is the least of them.

One other thing that can cause problems is when people add new video cards but do not increase their power supply. this will cuase many problems as well. It is always best to run the min. recommened pwer supply for the card and a little more if possible. On my old system when i began having problems with EQ1 after adding more mem and a new card, I quickly added a larger power supply and all my problems went away.

Like I said this may or may not help your problem with what apears to be a memory leak. I by no means run a high end system and I have had very few problems and its a gateway. I run a gig of mem and an ATI Radeon 5700 I believe it is. well which ever ati it is it is a mid-range card. and its a p4 2.4 proccessor.

I hope it helps, but if not maybe someone found the info useful.

Goodluck

he doesn't have to add in pairs, just recommended. if only install one more chip will run in single channel mode automatically. Dual channel mode is preferred since it is faster.

Well I did go out and buy a gig of ram ( $129 for 2x512mb sticks of pc-3200 mushkin value ram @newegg) and now it runs great, although you do start to see degredation after a while. What I have found is that running in windows mode like someothers have suggested has helped greatly. I run custom settings that are based off the "balanced" specs, with high textures when I am just traveling around doing quests or soloing, and I run it at "high perf." settings when in groups ( model detail and high textures down to medium). I watched the heat issue but some heat comparisons do not show that this is the root cause. I do need a new power supply (antec rocks) but I have had my vid card (9800pro $166) for a while now and have not noticed any voltage issues.

Either way, to sum it up, I have had success with ;
1. additional ram , EQ2 sucks when you got less than 1gig of ram
2. running in windowed mode
3. defrag drives weekly
4. static page file ( min - max virtual memory size the same ).
5. making sure no unnessasary background processes are chewing up resources.

I hope this helps. Also not running other programs that have similar mem leak issues prior to playing EQ2 is needless to say, not a good idea.

My comp specs

XP 2500 barton core
1.256 gigs of DDR400 ram ( 2x512 dual channeled + 256mb )
saphire radeon 9800pro (128mb)
winxp pro

The issue on these memory grips is getting a bit crazy. I've done a few things and have found a great work around for the memory problems we are all gripping about at least for my setup. I've got an Athlon64 3000+ o/c to 2.4 with 512Mb of PC4000. I had an issue at first then I tried a 2 tests, first test was increasing the memory to 1GB and the problem was still there. So my thought is adding more memory doesn't help. I have a 40Gb SATA drive partitioned into 3 partitions. 1 for Win @ 8GB, 1 for games @ 24GB, 1 for programs @ 8GB. I went and manually changed the virtual memory settings. I set drive C to no paging file, went to the game drive and set it to min=1000 max=1000. This is the drive where EQ2 resides. Rebooted the sys and have had no problems at all. The zoning time are less then 20secs even after being on for up to 8hrs. My roomate did the same thing after he saw my results and he's got the same system execpt he has a 6800gt and I have a 9800pro. Fixed his problem right away. I don't know if it will help with more memory then 512mb but couldn't see why it would not help. Just some input for anyone to try to help resolve the issue, all I can say is it worked wonders for me. Plus it saved me the cash from going and getting more memory, now I'll wait and save the cash for the 6800gt once they can resolve the stutter problem :)) Plz post back if you try this and it makes a difference I'm curious to know the results if anyone is willing to try it. Thanks and good luck to you.
