Simple RAM QuestionFollow

#1 Dec 15 2004 at 4:00 AM Rating: Decent
Well, I decided that I need to get back on EverCrack and I thought I'd give EQ2 a try. But my problem is RAM. After neglecting my system of upgrades I find myself in a bind. I don't know which way to go.

I was wondering if I should buy 2 sticks of 512 or just buy 1 stick of 1 gig? Is there a big difference going one way or the other?

And another question, I have read some posts on video cards not doing as well as others. Any suggestions on a decent card to hold me over for a while?

Any feedback is greatly appriciated.

ram.. doesn't matter, go w/1 gig if ya can to upgrade for the future. Vid card. The Radeon 9800 Pro 128 seems to keep most people content. Thought I have the Radeon 9800 256 (not pro) and it was only 206$ on zipzoomfly.com and it runs EQ2 great also.

I appriciate it, I'll look into that card. It's a pain when you have to upgrade everything again.

On the memory thing, yes I can make a difference. It depends on what chipset your MB is, but at least the NForce 2 chipset supports a feature that will make your PC use 2 sticks simultaneously in such that it will double your throughput of memory. IE go faster. I forget the name of the technology, but if your not using a NForce 2 chipset (AMD) then your probably ok with 1.

"Dual channel" is the technology yer thinking of, but although in theory you would get double the memory speed, this only translates into about a 10% performance increase.

At the moment it's still cheaper to buy 2 512's than 1 1gb, but in a few more months the 1gb sticks should be at the same price per mb as a 512.

You only need to consider the 1 GB stick if you want to possibly increase your RAM in the future. They only make sticks that big so you can have more space for bigger upgrades.
