Ok heres the deal, i got my first all singing and dancing grind group today <12 crusader> i was more than i little confused with the amount of aggro bouncing that was occuring.

Is there a better way of keeping the mobs away from the healer than just smacking taunt when it refreshes?

I got pretty good at aggro comntrol in EQ1 but there doesn't seem to be the same emphasis from what i saw.

any help would be gratefully received

I am not a MT , but a low lvl monk (23), so I sometimes get to be 2ndary tank when its necessary to pull off the healers or if MT leaves group I tank for a few pulls till we get a real one. What I have found is that its hard to keep all aggro on yourself when pulling group mobs unless you are also throwing in some AE attacks/ taunts as well. Doing this of course creates the risk of adds. I usually pull with Range item OR using distance attack (really depends on what the nearby environment looks like ie. lots of mobs in close proximity or open space. Then if the area is open the first thing I do once I have pulled mobs back to the camp is throw AE taunt on and continually hit my target with Taunting Slap, re AE taunt , rinse and repeat till all mobs are dead. That seems to be most effective to keep mobs off healers. When there are lots of mobs close by things are a little different, since I dont want to keep getting adds. In this case I useually just ask that the healer be sort of close by so that I can switch targets and /taunt as needed if mobs attack healer . This way I am not draggin mobs all over trying to find the healer , resulting in loosing aggro off other mobs and getting adds. /ramble off

IMHO, the best way to keep aggro is to land the very first HO, which for fighters includes a taunt.

So many people do not understand/use the HO system yet. Take to time to get to know it well, and as MA require people to NOT MASH buttons until you land your HO.

Then, of course, make sure all party members are using HO's, including you again. To land a Taunt AND big damage right off the bat will most definitely get the MOB's attention.

As for group mobs, use your group Taunt when the HO calls for it. Set up your group hotbar right below your solo bar so that you can see all flashing icons for the HO sequences.

My 2 cents...

I don't know anything after 20 (even so, I'm a Guardian, not a Crusader), so take what I say with a grain of salt. hehehe...

Anyhoo, the active mob (the one you're beating up at the moment) shouldn't budge from you since you'd be using taunt, combat abilities, (and landing HO's if your group is willing to cooperate) etc. If it does, then just slap a buff (like "Demonstration of Faith" or "Intervene") on the person it's attacking and you should be able to get hate back.

If there's more than one mob, I'd suggest using shout as the first "taunt". If the area permits it (no lingering mobs outside of the engagement), assault should help keep the other mobs stuck to you too. If a mob strays and you don't have a back up tank, use a buff on its target. If not-and this may not be good for all instances--you can always switch your active target to the stray and bash it a couple of seconds to get hate from it then switch back to your original target.

It seems that the path of the Warrior has more abilities to generate hate as opposed to Crusader. Of course this could be incomplete. I was going to mention Hold the Line (which would be a great way to regain hate as well as maintain it) but it doesn't look like Crusader's have it. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

And as long as your equipment is up to date (read NOT uber but appropriate for your level) and you're managing your use of abilities [and HO's], the only thing left for hate management is group effort.

As for this:

Let them keep it (hate that is)... see how fast they learn to control themselves. haaah. :P

I thought I'd add that group HO's are more effective than solo HO's so while starting of the fight with your solo HO would be effective for getting more hate, It's faster to kill enemys while utilizing the group.

So far I have only been able to purposefully generate a group HO with my brawler and my wifes mage. I start she smacks it with a bolt, I taunt she smacks with another bolt. Another one I have done was with a scout and a fighter which is along the same lines the fighter starts and the scout triggers. Yesterday while grouping with my new quild we triggered a huge HO that boosted our stats immensly, but it was accidental and I didn't keep track of what was done. Needless to say the final wheel after it was trigger required a spell from a fighter type, a mage type, and a scout type. The buff only lasted for 30 seconds but it saved our buts as we were all down to our final bit of power and very low in life.

Hiya Tarv! I am playing a 21 Paladin at the moment. I don't recall when we get our ward, but one of the prior posters is correct that it does generate a good bit of hate. Here is what I usually do - assuiming a group situation.

1. Pull with Righteous Anger
2. As the mobs are coming in, and as long as you have a clear radius, time Cry of Conviction to go off when they get to you
3. Shout
4. HOs during the melee

If I pull a challenging group, I hit D of Faith right after the pull as it will generate hate and save on some heals. If its a long battle, I many hit it once more during the fight, but after that I save it in case I need to peel someone. Using it on others is a nice aggro generator too. If there is a chanter in the group, I ask him/her to wait for the assist call before mezzing so I can have the aggro before they make the attempt.

There may be better methods, but I have had a lot of luck with this so far.

I am also a 12 crusader. Here is exactly what I do to get and KEEP aggro.

First, I tell my group not to engage till I get my first HO off. I engage the enemy, trigger my HO, use a sword skill to get activate it, and use shout to finish it. I never have probelms keeping aggro after this unles someone is attcking a mob other than mine, in which case, another shout now and then helps tremendously.

As a guardian I sometimes have a problem keeping aggro on the second target in a group of targets. Usually it is when a high damage mellee type is using auto-assist (ie he has me targetted).
The trouble is that after the first is dead and the second hits me the mellee type is smacking away already while I'm still waiting for taunt to complete, or even in the time it takes me to see that I have a new target and to hit the attack button. This also can be a real pain when you have an enchanter class locking things down because as soon as I target the mob in order to drop a couple taunts on it and make sure I get more hate than the chanter then the mellee type has a target from me and probably didn't cancel his attack button and so he wakes it and it turns on the skinny chanter. Not good. No matter how much I say to people not to use this helpful feature of the game I guess the temptation to target me, hit follow, then hit attack, then go and make dinner/drinks/whoopee is to great (I admit I love doing this when Im not main tank).
So, to help with all these scenarious I learnt to use group buffs as aoe taunts, which is what they are - as stated earlier by Mokuba. For a Guardian Battle Tactics seems to be the best one but basically now I almost never cast these buffs when NOT fighting - they are too useful. You other warriors just use whatever group buffs you get.
The other thing worth mentioning is that if you do lose aggro on a mob you can use protection spells on the player getting hit and you can target them through the mob thats hitting them. Target the mob and you can taunt and attack it while at the same time drop protection (Allay, Stand Firm, Sentinel etc) on the poor skinny that the mob is beating on without having to retarget on the player. Plus the mobs hate this tactic and turn back to you all the more quickly, with a group buff thrown in I can get the aggro back of a player pretty quick no matter how many buttons they are mashing.
