You need to find a "trade instance" to do artisan skills. Look for 'trap doors' in the basic towns, like baubleshire. Hail the npc standing by the trap door. If he says "i can't let u join" then move on, keep looking until one of htem lets u join. That's the one u want to be in.
Go in and find the merchant, not hte broker. Hit P and see your art. lvl. Buy all recipe books u need (hit B, hit edit, scroll down to see if u own any books - "unknown" refers to the recipes we all start w/, tin bar and tin spike).
You may wanna go into Forest Ruins and harvest a little tin from rocks, er that's mining, not harvesting. Anyway, buy a coal and a shaped fossil temper per tin cluster - turn em into tin bars. To do this go to the third little room on the bottom lvl (Q config - FP config is diff) and find the forges. Just click on one - and what u can make will pop up in a window - it's very intuitive and easy to figure out. Then w/ a coal and a sft per bar - turn em into spikes. That should lvl u at least to 4 if not 5. Buy new recipe book. Look around for stuff to combine.
Hit K and then the tradeskills button. Study these buffs/bad-effects-removers. You just have to read them and practice them to get what they do. Note that while making stuff if u see an icon appear, u must "counter" it w/ one of these effects removers -- AND -- they also work as buffs, so u can spam em to make faster progress.
At lvl 9 u must go to Q Harbor and seek an NPC who looks like George Lucas (I'm not joking) - Alfred Ironforge - and pick what you want to be from lvl 10 to 19. Scholar (make spells, jewels, and alchemistry stuff), Craftsman (wood and food), or Provider (metal and leather). GL
