i am just about to start eq2 and i want to be a mage what race is best
You can actually be any race you desire and be fine. EQ2 has made it so the races are a bit more balanced and most races can do well in any class.
However, if you really want the "best" races for a mage class, look to the Erudites or high Elves. They tend to do very well as a mage
