Need before GreedFollow

On whether something is red to you:

Check the skill listed in the item description. Then check your skills (hit "l" to bring up your skill menus). If you have the skill listed, check to see your current skill level. If it is higher than the item, you will be able to use that item immediately. If it is lower than the item, you will likely be able to use the item in a few levels. For example, say I get a piece of medium armor that says the minimum skill required is 110. I check my medium armor skill level and see that mine is currently only 100.

Now if medium armor isn't even listed as a skill of mine, that means I'll *never* be able to use that item.

That's how I think it works anyway.

Need before greed is a great way to play, if its a in a perm group or with guildies. That type of thing should be understood. But in a pickup group need before greed plain stinks. When I join or make a pickup group its to xp and everyone gets an equal share in the loot. Plain and simple. You have friends and guildies to help you equip and spell upgrade your char. Asking a total stranger to take the possibility of walking away with nothing but spit and maggots to show for his group contribution is just silly. Use lotto, go with an alpha order looting system, whatever..
Blacklist whoever you want, play whatever style you want, just know that expecting total strangers to act like close pals is unreasonable.

Misconceptions:

1) If you don't like NBG you are greedy.

Need before Greed is worded so as to make those who do not wish to practice this system sound like bad people, in other words, those who don't like the system must in fact be Greed before Need, their greed apparently. Of course, this isn't true. One can dislike a system of loot style and prefer another one without being intrisinctly out for themselves and only themselves. Any number of other loot styles can be fair and generous to each and every member of the group.

2) Those who practice NBG are not greedy.

Very many people use Need Before Greed in order to manipulate the system in order to get more loot by lying about what they need. NBG works with honest people, but don't just trust everyone. Keep an eye out for those who tout the system then one minute claim to be an accomplished armoror and the next a carpenter. These people are usually fairly easy to spot if you group with them a few times.

3) If I pass on the lotto for things I can't use, then we will be going NBG.

If you pass on something and someone else doesn't and the lot system hasn't been stated, you arn't making the group NBG, you're just passing on things. I've seen several times people passing on things over and over again without even checking if someone can use it. Don't do that. It's just stupid.

NBG, I say don't leave home without it. Nothing is more frustrating then something you really need, (cough shouting cry adept 1) dropping, and a necromancer winning lotto, and throwing it up for 2gp. Now non-NBG is fine for other people if they want to do it, but I myself always start my own groups, and they are always NBG, if you don't like it, fine, find another group. NBG promotes good feelings within a group. When someone in my group gets something they can use I think most people are happy for them. If no one can use, up for lotto. Why be so greedy and take something someone else needs I figure. But then again, you could argue the opposite point just as easily. Safe to say, leave it up the the leader of the group. If you dont like it, find a new group.

If you are going to sell it to get something you "need" are you being greedy to lotto on it in a pickup group? Really when you think about it, everyone has "need" although the "need" may not be for that particular item that dropped. I agree though, set the rules at the beginning. Then people can decide if they want to abide by them or find another group. Choice is a good thing.

There are so many drops in this game that this really shouldnt be an issue like it was in EQ1 where you had to camp a named for hours and hope that it dropped that nice item. Where as eq1 I was leaning against NBG in most pickup groups, I am strongly for it in EQ2... Simply due to the number of drops available.

No one is going to get screwed, your not going to upset anyone by taking something you would just sell, and they could use. Chances are within a few more mobs another chest will pop and you might get what you want.

Stuff you want, and can use will drop... If you want it and can use it, there is a much better chance that you'll get it if your group is playing NBG.

Would people's oppinions change if they knew that several Adept I upgrades only drop in certain zones? And in fact, those zones are quite often on the opposite side of the world from the city that allows those classes to be chosen? So if you are a Necromancer, then you have to travel to the Qeynos side to get several of your adept scrolls. Otherwise, if you practice NBG and arn't in a zone that caters to your class, you will just be out of luck with loot.

NBG is like camping the FBSS (in EQ1 - Guk) and expecting the casters not to lot for it because they can't use it. Hello... why are they grouping with you if they can't get any loot? They should go to where their loot drops and make groups composed completely of casters while you have groups composed completely of melees. Yeah, that works really well.
