i believe that there were enough people that wanted their own surnames that soe tabled the idea.
as for guildishness, i'm in a small family/social guild and enjoy it immensely. verry little pressure, and we help each other when we can.
this may help with your forming a guild... when we formed tb in eq2, we got our group of 6 together and talked to the spooty npc, gave him the silver... and when i looked at my guild window i was the only one in it! i ended up then having to /guild invite <name> everyone after the guild was formed, and one member had to log to go to work before i had figured out they'd added the space in the command... so we then only had 5 in the guild.
soooo... i'm thinking if you can talked some people into standing around in a group (they'd have to *not* be members of another guild) until you could form, then only invite the people that you wanted in, you'd be set :).
also, only leaders can promote members to ossifer, and you have to be in the same zone to promote someone :x.
