I think the subject says it all. I am joining soon and am intrested to know what is out there when i play cause i have heard many good things about this game along with WoW whic i am also tinking about getting. Depends on how much i like this one though. So a little insight for a noob-to-be?

Well, we look forward to any newcomers, and since I haven't played WoW (I've heard that it's good, but doesn't have any staying power), I am kinda biased to EQ2. Knowing that EQ2 is made by a company with YEARS of experience is very reassuring.
The game may be kinda hard to play depending on your computer's stats. So make sure you got some nice hardware in there. The game itself though, is VERY beautiful. The quest are awesome, most NPC's have their own voice. The fighting system is improved on from EQ1. The crafting system is also a fun alternative if you're tired of adventuring. And, for once, you can actually USE the stuff you make (unlike EQ1, where you just sold it to a vendor).
The people are more then helpful, and there are PLENTY of them. So I think that if you got the money/computer, go ahead. The game comes with a free month subscription. So ya, you got nothin' to lose. If you have any specific questions, just ask:)

Yeah I am kind of intrested to know what server is "RP heavy". I have played FFXI for a while and well the lack of RP is annoying.

Hrmm.. not too sure about that one. I'm sure someone who plays RP alot will come along soon. I think there is one though.

Befallen is a good server. I've yet to run into any jerks (don't know how.. it's eq). But I haven't even heard a cuss word over the OOC channel. Least I don't remember it. I'll group w/you if you join;).

Antonia Bayle and Lucan D'Lere are the two designated Role Playing servers, but I am not sure on how roleplay-sy they are, since I've never played on them.

I'm in Steamfont and see the occasional person trying to roleplay a little. Like saying "aye" instead of "yes", and "priest wishing to join hardy adventurers heading for the unknown" instad of "cleric LFG" (looking for group).

I've never tried hardcore roleplaying, but it does exist. You may want to google "eq2 roleplaying guilds" and see if you can find guild sites for ones that roleplay. Joining a roleplaying guild (you can talk to them before you own the game, of course) would be a huge step towards that, i'd think. Joining one on one of the RP servers - even more so.

Otherwise the game is very balanced - almost insanely balanced. I just got a new rapier for my rogue. It does 2-7 points of damage instead of 2-6. Woohoo, I thought. An upgrade. But then I noticed its speed is 1.5, and the lower damage rapier is speed 1.2... (which is faster)... glad i didn't sell it. Because I use poison, and the faster I hit the more often I can land the extra poison attack...... The good news, however, is that you can still dig the game and have a lot of fun while ignoring most such stuff.

The two things I'd suggest you read up on before you start are Heroic Opportunites or HOs (search this forum and others) and the spell/ability upgrading system.

The HO is an exotic "extra" attack and/or buff that you get by casting spells or doing abilities in a certain order, depending on little windows you see popping up. They really aren't that hard - and you do initiate them. They allow you to kill much bigger than normal stuff AND make fights go much, much faster. And you often end the fight with a cool buff running that carries over to your next fight. Search this forum/site and google "eq2 heroic opportunities". They are very much worth understanding.

The upgrade system. Each time you level and get a new spell or ability it magically comes to you - you don't have to buy it. Mages and Priests get spells - like Lightning and Heal. Fighters and Scouts get abilities like Taunt and Sneak Attack.

Each spell or ability, when you get it, is ranked "apprentice level 1". As soon as you get off the newbie island to the big city of your choice you want to start upgrading your spells or abilities. Why? Because they do a LOT more. My druid's lvl 1 damage spell smite did about 17 points of damage when he arrived in qeynos. At lvl 9 or so he upgraded it to Apprentice lvl 3 - and it did 27 points of damage. Suddenly his old newbie level one damage spell was competitive again.

Above apprentice lvl 3 is the Adept levels (rare) and then the Master levels (insanely rare). My druid is lvl 14 and has his Smite - his level one damage spell - upgraded all the way up to Adept level 1. It does as much as 47 points of damage - almost as much as his level 11 Chill spell, which does about 56 (at App lvl 3). Confusing? It actually is a little confusing until you "get" it.

Am I saying a low level spell can actually be better than a higher level spell because it has been vastly upgraded? YES. A level one Smite spell upgraded to Adept 3 would outdamge a lvl 11-ish damage spell called Chill left at Apprentice 1.

If I've confused you with this I'm sorry. Just know that when you arrive in Qeynos (good) or Freeport (evil), you can easily find a "scribe" shop or "trainer" and buy apprentice level 2 upgrades. Just right click and "scribe" them, and you're good to go.

Heh, by accident I think in rambling on about these subjects I've told you something about hte game I didn't intend. It's really complex. But don't worry, you can play it without understanding any of this. And as you go along it will come to you. The game doesn't come w/ detailed instructions, as far as I've been able to see - so you need to ask other players or post and read up in sites like this one to figure it all out. But again, you really can start and have fun and get stuff done w/out doing any of this "extra" stuff. Good luck!

Don't sweat it. You gain a level or two (easy) on the boat you take to the Island of Refuge. I think you are lvl 3 when you get there. Leveling to 6 on the IoR is easy.

Also, don't sweat your race and class. Just try whatever feels cool to you and play it a while to get used to the game. It's trivial to make a new char if you don't like your first one. You can level up to 6 on IoR really fast, so again, it's no big deal to make a new char. A good noobie tip - don't pick a name for your char that is hard to type. No one wants to send "Iskaandzachandrius" a tell because no one wants to get carpal tunnel syndrom typing that. Go for a crazy, long surname at lvl 20 instead - no one ever needs to type that (they talk to you via your first name).

Some advice on creating a char - read up on what race and class can be good, evil, or both. It's in the BASIC INFORMATION part of this site. Freeport really is "evil" - I get the heebie jeebies there. I've read about a hundred posts here where peple say it's ugly and oppresive. And most NPCs are really nasty to you - they still help you or let you do quests - but not without a ton of very condescending dialog. The good town, Qeynos, is at times fruit-loopy good - syrupy sweet. At least some of the quest NPCs are. Know that Qeynos has been branded "the popular city" - way more players go good than evil. Does that make it easier to get a group and to do tradeskills in Qeynos? So far for me - yes. Is it so crowded that I can't find mobs to kill? Not really. Being evil is still viable - it's not that big a deal that there are fewer evil players - but- you should know that this is how things are atm in the game.

Note, you *can* be an evil race/good class pairing, like Ogre Paladin (but it's hard) - (you can be good race/evil class, too, like a High Elf Necromancer). To become, say, an Ogre Pal, you must start off evil, on the path of an Ogre Shadowknight - but aruond lvl 15 (must do BEFORE 18!) you *betray* Freeport and move to Qeynos in a special quest. Search other threads here for tips on how to do that. And note - it's not at all an easy quest. It's time consuming, and if you ***** up one part of it - you get fined HEAVILY. So be careful.

Here's a noobie tip - when you get to the IoR kill the crabs on the beach right away until u get a ... dangit I can't remember if it's a bone or a crab shell - anyway, about one in ten crabs you kill drops a "treasure chest" - and this item will be in that.

You "examine" it - and get a special window. Click the appropriate option there, and you get offered a quest for a decent noobie item.

If you level up to four before doing this, you won't be able to get this quest any more yourself. Why? At lvl 4 the crabs turn gray to you - no experince - and trivial loot code (tlc) = no chest loot from them. You could ask some other noob to kill them for u and let you loot the chest (you can't be grouped w/ them - if something is gray to even one person in the group - the tlc kills chest loot and
I *think* also cancels exp).

Thanks, can't wait to start posting more here. The boards on the FFXI Forums are just flame wars now. It's nice to see some courtesy here. *smiles gently* I honestly can't wait to dive in hard and fast.
