Ya, this is a rant, but why is it I always turn into a cookie cut job?

A while before POP came out in EQ1, I made a Necro job. Picked it at random for my own taste of playstyle, and I loved it. Then once I started getting into guilds and stuff, I discovered something... there were a ton of Necros. Would make up like 20% of the guild.

After this, at the time of the new Stromm Server....I picked up a beastlord cause I still liked the pet. Was going along nicely. About the the time I hit Dawhshroud peaks, I noticed something. There were a ton of beastlords! Everyone talked about how the top solo'er (sine the server just opened and started at lvl 1) was a beastlord, so everyone else went and made one.

After this I made a bard..this being around LDON. Won't even get into how that experience blossomed.

Come to EQ2...I do /who's and I find ratios. About 20 Berserks of both Qeynos and Freeport compared to about 25 Paladins and 25 Shadowknights and 40 Guardians. Not a bad ratio. Nice, small job that I can work with and be a little unique. That was until all the Crusaders started complaining they can't hold taunt as well as a berserker (even though they take damage better). So now everyone and their grandma has started a berserker, and they all picked dual wield and stuff.

Why is it that the current fads always chase me around? Everyone started Guardian, and they all making complaints to nerf my job which was even smaller (because they didn't have it all). Those that got tired of it went and jumped the bandwagon and started Berserk. Is it too much to ask to not have 500 copies of yourself at all times running around? Only time I've gotton away from that was as a Samurai in FFXI, and I won't go into how that worked out cause of the groups.

They aren't following you around, you just just do not stand outside of the standard deviation. You are, technically average, or normal. You fit in with the majority. MOST people do, SOME do not. That is why there is an average, and what is considered a 'standard' or 'normal'.

On the note of Crusaders complaining, not once have I ever had a problem holding aggro. Now it's just too easy to keep aggro on myself. Oh well.

Don't worry about what everyone else is playing, play what you want to play, not what everyone is not playing.

*makes Brookie pie* Because thats the way these things are, everyone wants to be whats hip and cool and its also a form of consumerism. People drink Mountain Dew because they like it or be because everyone else is drinking it an it can also be a combination of both. in MMO terms of this with Cookie Cutter jobs is becaause people tend to manipulate and put into others minds if they want to do their job this is what they have to do.

Here is the real reason....

You make a character and chose an "unpopular" class.

The Dev's notice the class is unpopular so they "give it some lovin'" in the next big patch, or someone finally notices a cool "new" ability about the class.

Now that class is the new "flavor of the week" and some other class is the odd man out.... And you are now just one of the sheep even though you were leading the way a short time before.

It's unfortunate, but I suggest you just learn to accept it. Lack of popularity also helped me make the decision to be a berserker, and though they are a bit more popular now, I am still my own character and am not worried about what they sheep are doing.

You should just start a Paladin, now there's a class that will never be completely unpopular but also never completely popular or a fashion thing.

A bit of both, also in gameplay (I hope in EQ II the same though, only speaking from EQ experience as I'm only lvl 16 at the moment).

Nothing is "following" you around. This game is still new. People are trying out all kinds of classes as they go. Currently I have a Rogue and an Inquisitor, and a fighter I'm going to betray with and make a monk. People are still figuring out what they like and testing the waters. It will balance out in a few months.

I dunno.. some things will always be popular...

most people play warrior classes.. either due to thinking it's a nice easy class to learn the ropes, or cause it's something they really want to do.... crusader seems to be a natural branch from that class.. so, you'll have lots of crusaders.

healing classes are typically ignored cause they're considered dull or boring.. and mages are ignored cause they're seen as weak.

I'm a bit odd.. I'm a mage player.. not a single part of the fighter archetype tree interest me in the slightest.. in one area I will be following a more beaten path cause summoner looks like fun.. as does warlock.. I don't see too many druids but I suspect that'll change.

but if you want to go totally off the beaten path.. try swashbuckler..

Nope, sorry. Swashbuckler has been taken. Me and all of my "flavor of the month" friends are making them. You can try to make a Priest and never do your level 9 quest. That will make you unique...

You have to understand that with all of the people playing these online games there is no way for you to be unique. No one is following you anywhere. From your sig, you seem to be picking the most popular classes and I doubt you were the first one or the trendsetter. I seriously doubt you were the first necro ever and then everyone decided that they wanted to be just like you. There is a limited amount of jobs/classes in each game. They all have cookie cutter qualities.

Just because you decided that a class was cool to play because of your own reasons then found out there were a million more, doesn't make you any more special, just uninformed. It just happens that the day/s you did /who all you found less of a certain class doesn't make it the unpopular class. It just means that not many were on that day.

Like someone else said here, you are average and normal just like everyone else. Because you do things to try and get out of that, it doesn't mean that you succeed. Different would be not playing a game that 500,000 other people are playing.

For me, I could care less if there were 99 Pals and one Mage, or 70/20 or whatever. I notice the trends, but I don't care. I try to fit what I'm playing to the group at hand, if an ideal group isn't about. Don't get discouraged, just try and have fun.
