I don't know much about graphics cards, wondering if I could get any suggestions on one to buy for Everquest 2.. have about 200 dollars to spend.. thanks!

I would suggest having at least 1 gig of RAM before card.

Then when thats settled, look for a GeForce card, just not the MX line.

Go to main Everquest 2 site. They have a list of all the ones that will work.

Your best friend is Best Buy, go there with your computer when ready to make your purchase, and ask them which one will be the best for 200 dollars or under.

Good luck.

OK,
#1. Don't ever buy a graphics card at Best Buy. (Sorry Outlaw)
#2. If you have at least 512MB of RAM a new vid card will be more bennificial to you. (assuming that your current card is ****)
#3. Nvidia has recently just released an AGP version of thier 6600 GT. You should be able to find one online for $200 by Christmas. Ckeck out Newegg.com.

If you look at SOE's list of cards that work with EQ2, you'll find that they basically fall into two categories. That is, cards that were designed for DX8 and cards designed for DX9.

Cards designed for DX8 include the GF4200-4600, and ATI's 8500, 9000, and 92xx line of cards.

Cards designed for DX9 would be the Nvidia FX5800s, FX5xxx, and GeForce 6200-6800 series. For ATI, that would be the 96xx, 9700, 9800, and newer x600-x850 series cards.

The question of what's the best card for $200 is really debatable. The first thing though, I would rule out any cards that weren't designed to support DX9. I'd bet that within a year those DX8 cards flat out will not work with EQ2, in the same way that the old 3dfx cards that EQ1 was originally designed for are no longer supported.

If you check SOEs documentation, you'll find that they recommend you have at least a 256MB card if you want to use textures greater than medium quality. Unlike a lot of other games that are used for benchmarks, EQ2 uses a TON of textures, so I'd put 256MB on the must have list for EQ2.

DX9 support, 256MB, $200 to spend.

There is really only one card that stands out with those features, at that price, and it's a vanilla Radeon 9800 256MB.

The pro version has a faster clock, and for some of the effects it will be better, but the 256mb pro version is out of your price range. However, my experience is that the higher quality textures is what makes the game look good, and while you might have to turn down shadows and lights more with the vanilla 9800 you'll be able to run the higher textures with less memory thrash (ie, the 128mb version will be swapping textures in and out of main system RAM more often).

Anyway, thats my rec, GameVE has the 9800 256Meg for about $175 so the $200 price point can get it shipped to your door.

Other cards in this price range, 128MB 9800Pro, 256MB FX5700 and 128MB FX5900s, 256MB 9600XTs, will all work but probably won't work as well.

For about $70 more you can get a 6600GT 128MB, which is a new and much faster card that would almost certainly work much better in EQ2 than the 9800 256MB despite the smaller video memory. In the other cases (9800 pro etc) the speed difference is about 10-20%, not enough to negate the effects of the memory thrash, but the 6600GT is roughly 100% faster.

Forget all this old school stuff... For $210 at Newegg you can get a 256mb Radeon X700Pro.. One of the newest mid-range cards on the street. You can also get the 128mb version for about $40 less.

There is also the Nvidia 6600 GT which is just as fast at the X700, but I can't find any 256mb versions listed, and the 128mb versions are around $190 anyway... 256mb versions would presumably cost about $40 more than that.

Both of these cards are typically about 10% to 15% faster than a 9800pro and yet cost a little bit less.... How can you go wrong?

And WHATEVER you do, don't by any from the Nvidia FX series (FX5700, FX5950, etc.). They are supposedly DX9.0 cards but they take a serious speed hit anytime they run in DX9.0 mode and really are considered by many to be Nvidia's biggest mistake ever.

The only thing is that it's extremly unlikely he has a PCI-E bus system since about 99% of all PC owners have AGP right now.

The X700, X600, X300 series you mention are currently all PCI-E only. AFAIK, only the X800 series is available for AGP and they are well outside this price range.

Right now the AGP variants of the new cards is very limited. Of the newest cards that are AGP capable, 6600GT 128MB AGP version is about $230, X800SE is $310+, 6800nu (original) is about $300.

All of these cards are outside the stated price range.

If you trust ebay.. they have some brand new 256MB ATI 9800 PRO's going for a bit over $200. That is probably your best option if you don't mind it coming from ebay.

Personally, i've bought a car from ebay before..so.. <shrug>

I'm using the Radeon 9800 128MB.... and I can only use "BALANCE" setting with EQ2. I left all default settings from the driver side.
With 9800... I can't turn on any AA or AA with EQ2 :-(
So I bite the bullet and brought the Nvidia 6800GT with 256MB. Hope I can use higher setting..

The 6600GT smokes the X700. Do NOT buy an X700, they are complete garbage. The 6600GT is your best bet for a video card around $200. If you can afford a little bit more the 6800 would also be an excellent choice. Do NOT waste your money on a 9800 Pro either, the 6600GT performs better than that to for nearly the same price.
