Smiley: glare I have a character in EQ that I brought over to EQ2, meaning same race, same class, same name, etc. I got to 20 yesterday and I went to put the same last name I had in EQ (Pendragon) and they wont accept it.
Now, I know it's not very original, but I have had the surname on my EQ char for ages and I wanted to continue her (roleplaying she survived the catastrophe) as she was in EQ2. But SOny has gotten quite strict on names of any kind.Smiley: mad

I'm either going tohave to petition or wait for my RL hubby to pick a surname, get off his butt and "propose to me in game". And he better pick a good last name because I refuse to have Mrs. "Bluehair" for a last name.
/rant off

Anyone else having issues?

I have only once in 5 years of playing EQ gotten a name I selected for a surname approved. After my first and second choices are rejected, I give up and move on.

I guess by not expecting to actually have a last name, I avoid the disappointment when they are invariably rejected.

Petitioning wont do anything either. They will just say they cant help you with it. It happened to three of my friends. Apparently they dont have the option to change/add last names to players in the game. (I personally dont believe that).

How do you get a surname? Is there a quest for it, or does it auto-magically give you the choice when you hit 20? I have a few levels to go until I get there, but still want to know. Thanks.

Strange. I only had one surname rejected in EQ, and that's because it was the name of a movie character (toon's first name was Conah - wanted last name to be McLeod). I guess it was stupid of me hoping none of the GMs were Highlander fans. Smiley: grin

I don't see why they would reject Pendragon, though, unless it, too, is the name of a movie character. If it is, and it's an anime character name, forgive my lack of anime knowledge in advance.

They've gotten a LOT stricter in EQ2 regarding the standing TOS naming rules. Stuff that (although it was restricted in the EQ1 TOS as well) they used to let fly, they are cracking down on...

So, if it's a name from any common (or even some uncommon) media (i.e. Any film, print, or audio that has a copyright on it) it will get rejected...

In fact I've heard of them changing ones with odd spellings that were too close for their comfort.

The last name you are trying to use is from a movie, thus I really do doubt they will allow it even with a petition. Good luck to you anyway.

Yeah. I can attest to the fact that they're cracking down on the names in EQ2. Had a guy in my group who had the name of Punked, and a GM made him change it.

I've seen some people with names that I would think people would deem offensive, though. Guess the GMs just haven't caught up to them yet. I'm sure they will.

I don't agree.

I have seen single string celebrities - once saw mattdillon and mattdamon together (1 person two boxing ?).

I have seen nearly the entire cast of Lord of the Rings, The Wheel of Time and numerous other popular fantasy titles. I have seen 3 spellings of Nynaeve so far (1 correct got there first, presumably).

Sometimes I recognise a name and know I've seen it in a book somewhere and a few hours later it dawns on me - ah yes - the Recluse series book 3 the chaos wizard (or similar).

I have also seen names that look like they are intended to be the first half of a 'funny' combination. You can just feel the player called pickin itching (?) to get to 20 to /lastname mynose (or worse).

I have seen quite a number of what one might call normal earth names - anna, mike, jenny etc. Are these allowed? I assume so provided the surname doesn't match a celebrity.

I though that EQ was fairly reasonable for name monitoring - I presume when the dust settles these will be cleared up .......

silly question:

if someone has allready taken a lastname you want.. you can't /lastname it right?

pendragon isn't all that unique so is it possible that someone's taken it allready?
#12 Dec 06 2004 at 11:38 AM Rating: Decent
Yea I don't know how stirct they are with names. I was in South Qeynos the other day and saw Asswhole running around. I guess the GMs are more concerned about another Aragorn clone running around than profane names.Smiley: rolleyes

All depends on how long it takes for someone to report it. While there are filters, people are clever enough to find their way around them. I saw a dark elf the other day with the name *******. Offensive names being the one name violation I do report, I petitioned and a GM responded within half an hour. The individual was still online at the time, so I assume his name was changed.

In EQ1, 500 people could have the same last name if they wanted too. I'm assuming it will be the same in this game as well.

On my old server on EQ1, tons of people had the last name of Lebowski Smiley: grin

Speaking of Last names...

If I do /lastname and decide that I want to change it, do I have to /petition or can I do it on the fly?

Pendragon is the last name of King Arthur, which fits very well into the roleplaying/fantasy theme EQ and EQ2 is supposed to be about. In EQ on my server alone there were many Pendragons of same or various spellings. I can see being strict about popular movie names but if I try and give her a last name that has to do with another fantasy book ( oh for the heck of it let's say Stark from George R.R> Martin) will I then be rejected too? I understand watching for originality or for derogatory content, but something like Pendragon I have a hard time understanding why it would be rejected.

If EQ2 soars like Sony hopes it will, they will end up with a lot of unhappy customers who can not get a "clean" lastname due to it being part of our culture already.

Everyone picks Lebowski because we all want to be The Dude!

Aye - Uther Pendragon was his father...cool name.

Slightly off topic, does anyone know if you still need GM assistance for special characters in surnames, or names with more than one capital letter? eg: D'Noir

Thanks

I think I'll quit if they don't let me have mine.

Akiea Lk'Outgoat is the name and they better allow it!

Hey, almost everyone on this topic is a scholar. Must be a very academic topic :P

BTW, what does it take to be a scholar? High karma? If that's it, and I got rated down a hundred times on one topic for trying to con people into rating me up (was j/k), am I screwed and just need a new name? Is it possible to get a background wipe?

You’re still relatively new Xodarap. As you post more and people recognize you they will rate you up or down depending on how you present yourself and your karma will follow.

A bit of advice, if you want to start a karma thread the Asylum is the place to do it. We're all VERY nice there and I'm sure you'll last about 10 seconds or so before you go sub-default. Smiley: grin

All in good time...

I have a question, and I'm not sure if it was discussed alreayd, I just scrolled down past a cpl posts. Once you choose a last name, will what people see in game change from just seeing <First Name Here> to <First name and Last>? Or is there a way to turn it off so only your first is shown while you run around?

Also, how do you make your titles show up? Such as Orc Slayer, Gnoll Hunter, etc? Or are they automatically up, but you just don't know it?

Thanks everyone for help. =)

Edit: Whoops, also forgot to ask how you change yourself to roleplaying, and/or anonymous?

Once you have your first name and last name chosen people would see both names. I dont think there is a way to turn it off but Im not sure yet. I know there wasnt in EQ1.

Titles you get after killing 500 of each specific mob for the name. It's 1 am here and I am falling asleep but I think its in your persona area. Dont quote me. There should be a place there (by hitting the letter P) to drag down and is you have titles available it will list them for you to choose.

for roleplaying and anon I havent done it yet so I hope its like EQ1 and the command would be /role or /roleplay and /anon. If this is wrong though someone correct me.

My last name in EQ1 was An'Saol.
My last name in EQ2 is Ansaol.
Reason: They do not allow more than 1 letter to be capitalized, nor do they allow special characters (apostrophes, etc).
I think it sucks.

I really hope this refers to choosing a surname without assistance from a guide/GM. I would be very disappointed to see EQ2 name selection be less versitile than in EQ1. I have a /petition submitted (yeah I know don't hold my breath) to find out whether special characters and 2 caps can be used if you get a GM or guide to set the name like in EQ1.

I will post when I get a reply on the petition. By then you may have EQ3 installed. :p

Sorry to make this type of post my first :-)

Pendragon is actually not a surname - it's a title, in the same vein as Caesar. It was given to the High King of the Breton tribes, and depending on who you listen to, Arthur was never given this title.

This does of course mean not allowing the name is even more stupid - it shouldn't be copyrighted so there should be no infringements on it.
