Hi, Jamie Nesselroad here.
We are moving to EQ2 and will be playing on three accounts. We will be in parties of 1 to 3 players. I had thought to pick fighter-mage-priest group of three. But then I saw that the templar may be able to adequately tank. But then I thought, we are usually going to be playing as a threesome in the harder moments....

Should we pick:

1) Priest - Cleric - Templar
2) Fighter - Warrior - Berserker
3) Mage - Sorceror - Wizard

Questions:

1) Do the purer classes do better in a group of three than the hybrid like classes?

2) Would a Coercer - Mystic - Ranger be better or worse?

3) Does it matter as long as we have a melee, a healer, a caster?

BTW, We are a Warrior, Cleric, Enchanter threesome from EQ.

Hi, Jamie Nesselroad here.

Of course we would each pick one of the crafting areas to pursue. (hope that went without saying)

Given those choices I would Probably go Tank, Healer, DPS... which is what you've sort of Chosen already. I think Either the Warrior (guardian, bezerker), or Crusader (Paladin, Shadowknight) would be the best. Your cleric won't be able to tank a lot of the "group" tagged mobs that you'll want to be taking with more than one or two members, for that those classes are much better suited.

As far as healer is concerned, I would personally select templar/inquisitor. Best heals, good armor, lots o HP... Very nice class from what I've seen so far. You could go shammy or druid routes, but the clerics seem to be better suited to fully compliment a 3 person group.

For your 3rd choice (dps) this is where you'll have the most freedom. Take your pick... Mage of some sort works, scouts kick butt (I currently play a Ranger myself)... any of the above. Just get a class that can deal out the damage, and your killing speed will be greatly reduced.

Hope this helps, and these are just the class's that I would choose, I know others may, and will have differeing opinions.

If I had 3 accounts to hand pick players for, I would do a Guardian, Inquisitor, Warlock.

Best tank, best cleric, and a strong DPS. I choose warlock over wizard, only because in theory, I prefer DoTs as an efficient way of doing damage, and they get good nukes too. Wizard is probably equally as effective.

The nuker could easily be replaced with a melee class as well, and they COULD at least take some hits. Pick a scout type, add poison, and you have great DPS as well. Perhaps not quite as flexible a group as with a caster DPS, but more durable.

As stated by Sony, any of the 4 classes can do the same job. They just do it differently. It all depends on which will better benefit you.

Monk - Mystic is a good combo since Monks don't get hit that often. When they do, the rune of the Mystic will absorb any damage.

That is just an example of the different classes and their abilities. Each class does their job in a different manner. It doesn't mean that they are less capable.

From my personal experience, if I had it to start over and was hand-picking 3 characters with players who were theoretically equally good at all types, I'd go with paladin/templar/troubadour.

Yeah, the troubadour isn't as high DPS as a lot of the classes you could put there, but it's much more of an enabler, making both of the other characters better while doing a good chunk of damage on its own. The paladin is a fine tank, and I choose the templar over the other healers mostly because I personally like to load on the armor. I would definately take a scout of some sort over caster, because I think they're better manipulators of the HO wheels. Also, all scouts get an escape type ability at level 25 to get your trio out of a bad spot if necessary.

Currently I do most of my playing in a duo with my crusader (soon to be paladin) and my girlfriend's bard (eventually to be troubadour). The only times we've had a problem with anything so far have been trying to take white^^ or higher group mobs, or when one of us screws up badly. Usually I'm full health at the end of the fight, too (love my ward). If she catches up to me in level (she's a couple behind atm) we should have no trouble with white group mobs either.

We sit right next to each other while we play, so orchestrating HOs is easy.
