So i go and shell 53 dollars out for everquest 2. Well i didnt even think to check the system requirements since my computer is fairly new. I get it home and it wont run, as i only have 486 mb of ram. I was wondering if i get a new video card, and that boosts me up to 512 mb of ram, will the game still run good even though it is at the lowest system requirement? or should i shell out some more money that i dont have, forget buying people some christmas presents, and upgrade to 1000 mb of ram?

... vid card ram and regular ram are not the same thing. If you dont' have 512, I wouldn't recommend playing this game. Even with 512.. the lag can be pretty rough at times. I recommend buying 2 sticks of ram, to make one gig, and as for vid card, I only use a radeon 9600 128 meg and I have no lag and I got graphics turned up pretty high. *max on most*

Ram
Vid Card

... that's about it =p

ok

my computer is:

2.16 ghz processor
ram-448. planning to update to a gig
and i dont know how to find out what type of video card i have

Well bud, if you only show 448 mb of RAM and it's a fairly new system, it sounds like you have 512mb RAM but 64mb of it is being used by onboard video.

To see what your video is, right click your desktop and choose properties. Click on the SEttings tab and then click the Advanced button. Click on Adapter tab and it'll tell you what your video is.

Can also check Control Panel > System > Hardware Devices > Display

If you have onboard video, yer pretty much screwed for EQ2 regardless of how much system RAM you've got.

Go to Start>RUN> and type DXdiag , it'll tell you what vid card ya gots.

45 posts
right click my computer> properties> hardware> device manager> display adaptors> that should list your video card.

whats an onboard video? is it possible for me to remove?

also my video card is: VIA/S3G KM400/KN400
its 64 mb and its internal

is that the information you needed?

Yup, it's crap and it's onboard. Since it's built into the motherboard there's no way to remove it. YOu can normally disable it in the BIOS though, but make sure you have another card plugged into the AGP slot before you do this. 'If' this motherboard has an AGP slot, I've seen some that don't.

Ex: systems sold by MDG through their TV ads, have a whopping 1mb of onboard video and NO AGP slot, yet they claim these systems can be upgraded for good gaming!

Anyway, pop the side of your case off and look to see if you have an AGP slot, normally brown in color, above the white PCI slots. If you do, yer good to go, just buy a good video card. Plug in the new card, disable the onboard crap if you can, otherwise just set it to the lowest amount of RAM that you can so it doesnt' waste so much of your system RAM.

ohk, i think what im going to do is run my tower down to best buy when i have some extra cash, maybe after christmas, and buy a have them tell me what video card and what ram to buy. i think that'd be best. So there is no way to play the game until i do that? if thats true that sucks because i activated my one month free trial thnking my computer could handle the game. so now my one month is going to waste. damn.

If there is anything i could do to play without buying anything, just for a few weeks till christmas is over let me know. i really want to play and get a jump start on all the christmas people that will be starting.

thanks to everyone who commented. this was actualy super helpful.

That is the last thing you want to do. Once they find out you know nothing about computers, they will milk you for all you're worth. You will end up paying through the nose for comparatively shoddy hardware. I remember my friend ended up paying something ungodly amont just for RAM and hard drive upgrades (labour charges were obscene), totally not worth it.

With your current hardware it is impossible to play EQ2. It's an extremely demanding game, and even the highest end systems get worked in busy environments. You need to check if you can disable shared video in your BIOS, and whether or not your motherboard has an AGP slot. If you don't know how, see if you have any family or friends who can help you out. Now, if you can disable the shared video and have an AGP slot, all you need to do is buy a video card and suitable RAM (an extra 512 would do the trick) to go with it. For video, I'd go with a 9600 XT minimum - optimally you'd probably need at least a 9800 Pro. Also, don't get tricked by bigger numbers: a 256MB 9600 XT is not better than a 128MB 9800 Pro. The importance lies more in a card's chipset than its on-board memory.

I highly recommend doing some research on computers and learning how to build one yourself. You'll know exactly what's in your machine, and you end up getting a lot more for your money.

If his computer is crappy then he may have incompatible AGP and PCI slots. Like AGP x2 only or something. Most new video cards require at least x4.

The slots you're looking at are likely PCI slots. Most cards on the market are AGP-based, with newer cards being PCI-Express. Make sure you do have an AGP slot available on your board (like kalamaf mentioned above, usually it's brown).

Here's a 9600 XT with 256MB RAM for a little more than $150. It's not the best card, but it'll get the job done.
www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=14-102-450&DEPA=1

You should be able to find a 9800 Pro 128MB card for less than $200, which is quite a significant step up from the 9600 XT. I've read good things about nVidia's 6600 GT, but AGP versions are more expensive than PCI-Express by $50+, for some strange reason. Top of the line cards run for $400 and up. Also, you should avoid SE-line cards like the plague, they're typically neutered in some fashion (slower memory/core, less pipelines, all equating to worse performance).

Hope that helped. It's all very general info, but it should give you an idea of what to look for and how much you should expect to pay.

ohk, thanks so much everyone. very helpful.

Umm.. to say that a 9600 is the minimum is BS. I have a 9600 and it's not even XT, and I got Character texture on Max, and All other textures on medium, spell particles on max. And guess what. NO LAG! Not even in cities. These guys probably have never owned a 9600. It's a very good card imo. And mine's only 128 mgb
