Old school EQ players are hatersFollow

#27 Dec 06 2004 at 7:51 AM Rating: Decent
EQ > EQ2 imo.
BUT
You cant fairly compare the games cause EQ has been around for 5 years and has alot of expensions.
EQ2 has potential to become just as great as EQ is.
In a year or so we will know if EQ2 has what it takes to keep everyone playing and playing.
Atm I see so many bad things about EQ2 but I really dont care cause I know most are buggs that will be fixed and other things will get better at higher level or with the next expension etc.

If it was my choice I wouldnt have started EQ2 until about a year from now.
I had no choice really cause all my friends left and started with EQ2.

In my experience no multiplayergame is great from release, they need to mature, being patched, mby get a bonuspack or an expensionpack.

i played eq1 right before kunark was released and loved the game till about 6 months ago or so. then the game just got boring and repetitive for me. i hated grouping cause as a warrior it was pretty hard to get a decent xp group. that is why i love eq2 cause even if you cant find a group you can still go out and solo if you want to while you wait for a group to grab you up. imnot sure how the hihger lvls will be for soloing but right now at lvl 17 i can still solo pretty easy. sure i get smacked around every now and again but thats the way it goes.

alot of my friends from eq1 didnt want to switch over because they said the same things alot of you ahve said.
i dont want to be a newb again
eq2 will suck
what about the time ive invested in eq1 one i dont want to just throw it away for a game that will only last 6 months
ect.ect.

to those people i say its just a game. sometimes its better to try different things. maybe you will find a game that you enjoy more then eq1. i have played tons of online games since i started playing eq1. ive played anarchy online, swg, ffxi, CoH, DaOc and now eq2. i liked things in all those games except for ffxi i just never got into that game like other ones ive played.

ill keep playing eq2 cause i love the game sure it has problems but its because the game is new they still have to work out bugs in it. i hope it turns out to be the best online game out there.

Thats not entirely true because I love EQ. I have a 55 pally, 34 beast and a 31 shammy. As soon as I get my other computer up, I will play again. Since SWG I havent played that much. And since this came out I havent played SWG as much, but all these games are apples and oranges and I refuse to compare them. Each has something different that you cant get in the other and that's why I like them. If they were all the same, I'd still be playing EQ because why switch to a clone? Just play. Its suppose to be your reality away from reality to relax. If all you worry about is the flaws, why do you play? Get a grip. They're just games and a place to socialize with people you would prolly not ever meet. Enjoy yourself and have a Tunare ale or something.

Lol, I started EQ in May of 1999 and still play it, so I guess that makes me an old school EQ player. I love both games for very different reasons. Please do not generalize people with such broad statements as it only makes you look bad.

some people invest themselves emotionally in things... this is not a sign of weakness, nor of a moronic nature. however random flinging of derogatory comments can be a sign of both.

I actively played EQ for about 4 years starting in beta. I got to where I couldn't stand to log on for yet another evening of mindless grinding out the experience. I remember the immense feeling of relief and freedom when I resolved to stop playing although I kept my account active (just canceled last month). A huge load was lifted from my shoulders and I felt like I finally got my life back when I stopped playing. I couldn't understand the mentality of people who logged on almost every night, usually to mindlessly kill something over and over and over.

I'm back in EQ2 but I do NOT plan to let it dominate my life to that degree again.

EQ2 has definately cleaned up a lot of things from EQ. I like the fact that it really now is EverQUEST and that you can do pretty well (at least as far as level 20, where I am) by spending most of your time questing, although I ended up exping the last few levels. They've cleaned out a lot of exploits (I'm VERY glad to see kiting go away).

But don't fall into the trap of thinking EQ2 is perfect. Not even close. It's got flaws and serious ones. It's got things which are way behind the times (such as I have to sit in my freakin room to sell stuff -- it has no true consigners even though older games do and don't get me started on this obsolete concept of zones).

But the final and only really important question is "is it fun?" If it is then it's good enough. If it isn't then all the eye candy and fancy features in the world mean nothing. It won't be for everyone and a lot of old time EQ players won't like the transition. Them's the breaks.

Ok, I'm gonna be honest. I played EQ1 for about a year, and I don't find that they are "haters". In fact, they're the nicest people on the game. I get almost no help, or advice from ANYONE. If I do, they are people who played EQ. I will ask a question in OOC, in a very populated zone, and get no answers. I will send tells to at least 10 people, and get no answers. What happened to the friendly people in the game??? To me, it just takes some of the fun out of it. Anyway, no, I love EQ2 so much more than the first, and have very few complaints.

Well i remember when luclin came out in eq1 and i was like omg this is the beginning of the end for everquest. Then the expansions were popping out left and right. Being a druid and porting for coin i was not as much needed in game. then the nerfs started with pets, warrior tuant lagged big time, druids got nerfed too.Well it seemed like all the classes took nerf hits etc.

Then the pok stones came and people could go everywhere with there EBAY 65 what evers etc. 3 1/2 years into eq1 i stagnated with all sorts of toons on many different servers. The economy's went crazy because u can buy plat on sites which ruined the prices of most everything.

Now in EQ2 i find a spark again of new adventure and the trade skills are fun. I love the many quests to choose from as well.

My biggest gripe is having to rely on other tradeskill people for components to do my stuff example: stroma for maple chest, spells etc.

The best help i have gotten in eq2 is from eq 1 vets and im glad there are a slug of um. most of the time tho i feel like my ooc etc arn't working cause nobody answers. We have to remember eq2 is very new and lots of new things will appear with patches (basil) <<--- grrrs ) Good luck everyone and be safe!

So true.
My biggest concern about EQ2 is that people is grouping ONLY for the quest, then usually the group will split shortly after.
I asked 3 or 4 things around, got not even a replying tell, not even a simple "don't know, sorry".
For being on a RP server this was even worse, as usual RP servers tend to have nicer players.
I got a few remarks on EQ2, some will be fixed like a couple issues with the tradeskill system, some will not as they are the core of the game, for now is fun, that's it, but I'm foreseeing this game not having a long life like his prequel:
Besides the fact that nowdays you can see a new MMORPG every days on the shelves, "their way of questing" is not that interesting and nothing new (ok, no inventory slots used by quest drops, that's it). The fact that it gives a lot of exp completing a quest is just another way of grinding and making things easier: just hail the npc before going to kill.

Maybe it will change at higher levels, so far it's pretty much repetitive.

In the end it's a good game, not fitting me 100%, but will work for a while.

I started playing EQ1 the second day after it came out (yes, I know it was hardly up that day, but I got in and played a woodelf ranger for about 15 minutes before I had to leave to visit go with my GF to her parents house).

I did take about a year and a half off, but basically I have played it quite a bit over the last 5 years.

I must say in all honesty that EQ1 just had a little bit more of a "hook" to it. Something always drew you back to playing it in a way no other game ever has before or since (thus the term EverCrack).

EQ2 still is good, and it definitely has a good hook of it's own, but not quite as strong as the original.

On the flip side, EQ2 is about 10,000 times less frustrating than EQ1 while still being almost as challenging and fun. Overall I am happy with EQ2 for now, and hopefully will still be happy with it atleast until Middle-Earth Online comes out (if it ever does).

Some day as you sit in your rocking chair talking to your grand kids and MMO's are all but washed up, you can tell them how great it was.

The first is always the best.

True.

Does anyone remember the rush of being chased around in UO by packs of PK'ers? I'm talking old school UO, the first 6 months it was out. Now THAT was intense. I used to go to bed at night scheming ways to exact revenge. Ah youth.

Old time EQ player here and I happen to LOVE EQ2!!!! I was also in beta and I loved it then!

Broad generalizations are BAD..... not a good thing to do my friend..... opens yourself up for flames as well as your name.... not from me of course, but ... ya know =D

Simply put, ignore the doom-sayers. If you enjoy it, love it... if you hate it, leave it. Simple.

Edit: Ignore the ogre who can't spell....

I played EQ 1 for 4 years and have been playing EQ2 now.

I loveed EQ 1, and I am starting to love EQ2. Yes, I left behind a lvl 48 Cleric, but so what. I start over, and I get to do it with everyone else. I remember jumping on to EQ the night after the Expasnison went live that let you make Frogs. From 12midnight to 8PM when I signed on, I saw lvl 32 Frog charecters. It was sick. The entire system of EQ one was growing tired. Money had no meaning. All the lvl 5 Clerics had better armor than I did.

The game became a place for everyone to show off their ultra twinked and uber charecter.

Even with this, I didn't mind the game. I stayed away from those people and had my fun. I just like this new feeling of a fresh start.

What I don't get about all these ranting and raving posts are that most of the people curseing out EQ sound like this.

Yea, EQ2 sucks, it s boring and no where near as EQ1. I hate Sony and wish they would get a game right.

Uber no life player

Lvl 30 Paladin

Seriously, if all these people hate EQ or EQ2 so much, why are they still paying for it, and reading these posts to interact with the community about it. If you dont like it, stop paying for it.

This is why I think there should be no bad rants about these games from anyone that plays them. I didn't like SWG much, so I stoped paying for it. Because of this, I neve rhad enough interest to read a SWG newsgroup to write about it.

I played UO when it first came out, I actually stopped playing because of all the PK's, but it was fun for a while before I quit, I'd go on, get smacked down, find a group to go exact my revenge and then move on, can't say I didn't deserve being killed some of the time, I'm walking around, minding my own business when all of a sudden I come across a fresh corpse with lots of goodies ripe for the taking...and then the owner finds me walking from his now naked body and smites me. my biggest grpe about UO was getting killed by squirrels and pigs. I know Boars are pretty tough animals, and you hear about people getting mauled by them every once in a while, but really, getting killed by a squirrel? I played EQ1 for a few months and just couldn't get into it, so I left the MMO world all together until SWG came out, moved from the to FFXI, hated that, stopped playing a few months ago, and now I'm on EQ2, this one seems to be holding my attention, we'll see how long that lasts, point is, not everyone is going to like the same things you do, or dislike the same things you do, perfect example being I think the movies Howard The Duck and True Genius are GREAT. I know plenty of people who strongly disagree.

I started EQ1 back right when Velious came out, so I know pretty well how EQ was back in the day. I must say tho that I really like EQ2 because has many things that you cannot just add in an expansion to EQ1. The original EQ had many novelties that are missing in the n ew game tho. I miss the days of killing bankers and trying to kite guards around just because I was bored. Sometimes you have to let players just skrew up by accidently pressing the "a" button to unsuspectingly get slaughtered by a guard in your first 5 min of playtime. The thing I miss most of all about EQ1 is my friends. Most of them didnt migrate over and I miss them dearly. Well time will bring me new friends and new adventures so I welcome this new EQ with arms wide open.
