Let me start by saying that I played EQ 1 for pretty much the whole 5 years it has been out, with maybe a year or so of breaks in there.... and loved every minute of it.

When FF11 came out, I was totally excited (anyone who owned an SNES and played FF2 and FF3 must have been)

I begin playing it, and almost immediately was totally and completely disappointed by the armor lvl caps. I mean, come on, everyone walking around with the same exact armor type for 2 levels until a new set becomes available. Then everyone sells off the old armor, buys the new one, and the cycle continues. BORING!! I appreciated the attempt at curbing twinking, but EQ 1 did that much more effectively and creatively by putting reccommended levels on alot their equipment.

I already feel this creeping up on me in EQ2. In many many ways, EQ2 is much more similar to FF11 than it is to EQ1. Don't get me wrong, i'm having a blast, but between the quests handing out the same armor, the Armor 1, 2, 3 etc quests and more, people are again equipped disturbingly similarly. Who knows if this trend will continue into the upper levels, i'm only 21 now. In fact, I have no idea if that even continued to be a problem in FF11, but i'm assuming they either changed it radically after I quit, or
it is still a problem to this day.

What do you guys think about this? What happened to the diversity of thousands of different kinds of armor, weapons and items. Granted... EQ1 has been out 60 times as long as EQ2, and even EQ1 in the beginning had the patchwork, banded, bronze... fiasco. But the very game mechanics themselves in EQ2 (ie: quests give the best stuff) seem to make me think this problem will continue

That's a good point, Sepulveda, however, like you noted, EQLive has been out a much longer time. This much longer time includes 8 expansions that, for lack of a better word, expands the game(i.e. more quests, new craftable equipment, new zones, more drops). In other words, after a couple of expansions people will begin to equip a diversity of armor and weapons because it will be available, but, until then everyone is going to have the same gear equipped because they are going to be doing the same quests that give the best items.

At least I hope this will happen when new expansions come out or I will be pretty disappointed with SoE(which had become a common occurence in EQLive but I have yet to be let down in EQ2).

Remember in EQ1 when EVERYBODY had rawhide, then banded, then bronze? Then they put in the quest armors and EVERY warrior had crafted?

My druid in EQ looked like a newbie for about 50 levels, because all the druid gear looked exactly alike.

It'll change. When it did change in EQ a lot of people complained ("I liked knowing what your gear was just by glancing at you").
