Worth switching from FFXI?Follow

#1 Dec 02 2004 at 4:32 PM Rating: Decent
I dunno..it would be kind of fun to start from scratch in an MMORPG especially since the game just came out. It has always been kinda odd in FFXI since I started 8 months ago and the game had already been out like 2 years....thers soo many high level players.

I love playing Ranger and Thief in FFXI...are there similar jobs in EQII? What jobs are liely to be good notorious monster hunters or chest hunters, etc? (basically which jobs are more geared towards making money?)

I love FFXI and it would hurt to leave...but we all know there's not enough time in the day for even one of these games, much less 2 or 3.

Coming from FFXI I feel your pain. I can tell you this, I was a huge FFXI fanboy. I started playing this game last month and haven't looked back yet.

This game has a great tutorial at the beginning. You learn all about your world on an island and do several quests along the way before coming to the main land.

The quests you do give you items that you can use and money to spend on things you need. There is a lot more soloability to this game than FFXI which is a nice bonus.

Another great thing is what SOE calls instanced zones. Remember in FFXI how everyone partied in the same dozen zones and there were no mobs? In this game if a zone fills up you can go into a different instance of the same zone with more mobs for you.

It is a great game and I look forward to playing it for a long time. Also check out http://www.eq2players.com its a great site to learn more about the game.

I would agree. I thought there was no way I was going to play anything but FFXI. Then my LS changed over to EQ2 so I thought I would try it. I opened up FFXI long enough to cancel my account after that.

The game is great (has bugs though, which is to be expected).

I came from FFXI too. Yes, to me it was worth the switch. There's not the intense "gotta have the BEST or never get a group" feel in this game. Grouping is pretty casual, and if you feel like going out to solo you can. Making money in this game, while not "easy" ... is far easier than making Gil in FFXI. You get exp and nice items for quests. The areas are huge and it's fun to explore. Crafting is way more fun.

Yes, there are jobs like Ranger (haha there's a Ranger class in EQ2 actually) and Thief. They are under the main Job Scout, and you progress from there. There are some jobs that you can only be if you are evil or good, though, and some that it doesn't matter. Do a little research before you decide for sure which path to go.

I agree with everyone else's posts. I loved FFXI like mad. But since trying, I only logged into FFXI once to sell everything I owned from all my characters and gave the gil to my real life friends that played it on PS2 and don't have enough money for computers capable of playing EQ2. No regrets at all. EQ2 is a million times more fun in just about every way. Crafting is more fun (how you could expand on pressing a button then watching as you either tried or failed a synth seems so obvious in hindsight...), partying is so much easier, and the quests are lucrative and GIVE YOU EXP. No job classes are terribly shunned in this game, and there isn't the elite attitude about gear. You should have fairly up-to-date gear, sure, but über, expensive items belong where they should: in the hands of a select few. I am at level 20 with a beautiful shiny suit of armor, and I've never had to farm once. I sell what I make adventuring or questing, and have plenty left over to start up a business. Jeez, I don't even know how to tell you how great the change is without gushing. This is a gorgeous game and I can't get enough of it.

worth every minute...

I've not deleted FFXI yet.. but the day is rapidly approaching.. I logged into EQ2 the 14th of Nov and honestly I feel less and less inclined to log into FFXI on a daily basis.

only reason I log into FFXI now is to catch a LS memeber on so I can give him back the armor I'm borrowing.. then I can delete characters and close the account.

The only thing I miss about FFXI is the ability to change jobs. I wish every game would let you play different classes on the same character, if only to make it simpler to communicate with people you know.

Unfortunately I didn't miss that enough to keep me from cancelling my account.

But I invested so much time into FFXI... /cry

I am so torn between cancelling and not. But I have to. There's no point in paying monthly fees to a game I doubt I will go back to. Now I feel I need to hand out my stuff and gil to either LS members or new players. But I don't want to do that because it will take up my EQII playing time... Hahaha!

Seriously. It actually does take time to hand out all your stuff. I had two main characters and some mules with lots of food items stored on them. It took me several hours to unload all my items on my main account and mules to people who could use them, and after that I kept putting off unloading my second character's items (probably around 100k worth of stuff) because it took so much time, and I 'd rather be playing EQ2. Then my account ran out, so I never got the chance. Oh, well. It was pretty fun, though, giving low level items and stuff to noobs while speaking with them in my stuttered French...

Honestly I would highly recommend checking this out or even playing both like I am. I'm a huge fan of FFXI and I will not be deleting my character, but I will stop playing as much as I was previously. The nice thing about EQII is you have a much larger range of freedom. A few examples would be; The quest system is nice and some quest even reward XP for completing them, groups aren't as depended on certain classes so xping is much easier and faster, also you have an over all larger community, unlike as in FFXI you had NA/JP, and I don't know about your server on FFXI but I don't see the drama on this game like I did in FFXI due to the NA population and community being so small.

I'm not really sure what class is geared towards making money but for a THF type class you want a Scout class, I mean I play a BRD in EQII and we play just like a BRD & RDM w/ THF/NIN mixed in.

I played FFXI on the U.S launch, played it for about 3 months until I quit and moved onto SWG, I don't know what FFXI is like now, but I quit it for a large amount of reasons, I basically started loving the game then slowly found out it was a p.o.s lol

FFXI had some stupidly long quests, especially the ranking ones. Money (gil) was very hard to get but what did it for me was the total lack of solo after lv 12, it was total grouping beyond and once my main hit around lv 40 there wasn't many English speakers around and the japanese loathed the U.S players and wouldn't group with them, would grief and so-so, so basically my characters levelling process stopped around lv 40 so I switced to a new job, got it pretty high then stopped dead, in the end I found that only the beastlord job had any chance for solo.

My character was:

Warrior lv 41 Red mage lv 21 Summoner lv 8
Beastlord lv 38 Paladin lv 15 Monk lv 9
Bard lv 39 Ranger lv 9 Black Mage lv 9
White Mage lv 21 Ninja lv 16 Thief lv 15
Dark Knight lv 9 Samurai lv 21 Dragoon lv 10

At the time, the japanese pretty much pwned the game but I don't know what its like now, not that my CD-KEY works anymore (read the fine print)

The game did have some cool things, especially having dual jobs but the game sucked, I hope it improved somewhat now. At least I learnt a little bit of japanese whilst playing.....

Yes I agree and that was the dilema that I faced last week. After having FFXI for over a year, and basically seeing all there was too see(honestly the crabs dont change, not one bit)I gave EQII a try. I proceeded to have both accts for about 2 weeks. Then I realized that I could play EQ for minimal time (seeing as how I am in the military sometimes 1hr is all I get) and still accomplish something. That sold me to EQ right there. I logged on gave away everything to my ls(3 mil in eqp and 2 mil in gil). Had a meeting with all of them and friends. Kind of touching as there were roughly 40 people in the chapel in upper jeuno. It was then that I said my goodbyes and walked out and tele holla for the last time. After I did that I looked at the character delete screen for about 30 min...why...because FFXI did produce some great times. All in all I think it had more to do with the time I had to put into a MMORPG. FFXI is a very good game from a social aspect, but it lacked the substance to keep me playing. I myself can not contribute 10hrs a day to a game, and I could not accomplish much in FF with out that dedication. Also as mentioned above: This world is new and I can shape it and see it how I want too. That is the reason I chose EQ, and I think only you can make that decision yourself.

Very well put. I started EQ2 last week (25 November) and have yet to log into FF once since then. I can't stress enough how much I will miss the FF community, however EQ2 is just plain better in almost every single way. I have been playing almost exclusively with my RL wife and have made it to level 16 with no problems.

There seems to also be a lack of forced farming in EQ2 as well. I have what I believe is some pretty sweet armor at my level and I have received almost all of it through quests. Quests that really anyone can do. The money I have needed so far has gone to things like my rent, food and other essential things.

There is definatly something to be said for starting EQ2 now as well. The only non "Newbs" are former EQ1 players that seem to welcome us with open arms. I have yet to run into anyone who was rude to me (although last night some halfling was standing in front of me jumping up and down and /sobbing for like fifteen minutes while I was chatting with my wife :)). I think it's really cool to be involved in the beggining of this community.

As far as the OPs question of what job would translate in EQ2, I guess that would have to be a scout. They are reliant on stealth and even have an ability called "Sneak Attack" that does exactly the same thing as SA in FF. You gain new abilities pretty much every level or two so it always feels fressh as well.

To conclude the longest post I have ever written :P, It's up to the player to decide what game best fits their play style. I think I will stick with EQ2 now, but you might like FF way better.

Hey if you know of any people interested in seing gameplay footage before buying it, I have set up a website to host EQ2 videos. I am trying to make it even half as good as Karg's so bear with me.

Check out this thread:

http://eq2.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=19&mid=110201998973547159&num=7

I will be adding more in time. I wanted to post a link to this in the FFXI main forum, but I am afraid that some fanboys will nuke me into oblivion for even mentioning that there are other games out there. If you know people that are interested, but would like to see what its all about first send them to that thread.

Also if any of you have video you would like hosted let me know. Thanks!
