****EDIT*****

This is in no way meant as a slam to those leveling like mad. Go for it! There is no disrespect intended, play the game how you want.

****EDIT*****

After a month I am sure they will be 40. Might take them a total of six weeks to reach 50th.

I guess I am looking for insight into their mindset. I mean, granted, I level pretty fast. I am already 26th and will probably be 30th by the end of the first month.

But I take the time to do all the quests that I can in a given zone, and don't move on until I have unlocked and seen every zone that I can.

These people are blowing through the levels. Whats the point since there is no end game content waiting for them?

Competition. A need to be first...heck, I don't know. In the end, it's their game as much as it is mine, and I can't fault them for playing that way if that's their goal.

But I also can't help but feel that they are missing out.

We had a guy in our guild who flew ahead of all of us in levels. When we were all still around level 12-15, he was doing his subjob quest, and moving into the 20's.

He quit yesterday. Said he was burned out from the grind. All I could think was "you mean the self-imposed grind?" It just doesn't make sense to me. But hey, maybe I'm just not looking at it the same way. :)

I guess thats what I mean. I love seeing new zones and doing new quests, and before I knew it myself and two other guild members had flown past everyone.

I looked at the player rankings and realized I was the 4th highest defiler on the server. To some I guess that's a mark of status. To me, it means I need to slow down so I can play with my friends.

I have had this game since November 22nd (had video card problems otherwise would have been the 9th like everybody else Smiley: oyvey) and I am only level 9. I have been exploring Qeynos and the outlying area. I have taken a bunch of quests too. I have like 20s already from doing quests.

I came from FFXI and am so anti-exp grind its not even funny. This game is so different than what I am used to in the fact that alot of the quests not only are easy to do by yourself, but give you equipment/items worth having.

I love this game! I can't wait to become a crusader! I just unlocked that quest last night and am really exicted about moving up from a fighter.

well, they want as many AA's as soon as possible Smiley: jester

most of the driving factor is competition I guess. but so what? let them run to 50. everybody his/her own pace.

I'm about to hit shadowknight, and have done a good number of quests, (getting close to 100). I think I am moving at a decent pace, and still catching a good chunk of content. I will probably go back and do a lot of the more simple quests just to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Sometimes it's nice not to be first. They blaze a trail, figure out where and how to get important things, fill out the databases on sites like Allakhazam, and often help out lower level players with quests, gear, advice, etc.

It's impossible to tell what portion of the higher level community is cool like that, and what portion are the "others", because all you hear are the "others". You know who I'm talking about. Those pathetic "elitists" who burst into tears over the fact that they got there first when the game was still bugged and imbalanced and too hard, and how we had it sooo much easier. Happens in every MMO. Let me find the world's smallest violin and see if I can shrink it down a bit to play for you guys.

At least the high level elitists aren't as bad as people who keep mentioning their "RL GF" in odd contexts, as if to fend off the implication that they are a dork who can't get laid, since they play this. Now that's sad. Worrying someone might think you're a dork when you're surrounded by men pretending to be women with big swords (I think a lot of people work out their complexes about having control over women via MMOs).

I think I'm a competitive player, I leveled pretty fast in EQ1. My guild in EQ1 wasn't the highest on the server but we weren't far behind. I've seen zones and encounters probably 60% of my old server will never see through the eyes of their toons. They can read about them on sites like this one or other guild sites. But, they'll never actually get to those encounters. I did and it was a rush to be some of the first.

I loved being first to get the newest AAs and have all the new toys before anyone else. Running around a populated zone with the newest weapon or armor was awesome. People would send you tells asking where that came from. You'd tell them and you could just see them grow green with envy. It's just a status some people want. Doesn't matter if there is no end game. They will be the first ones on your server to see it.

I started EQ2 like that. I've since slowed down and started doing more quests and checking out the zones. Access quests are alot of fun. (Plus I couldn't keep up with my friends.)

Seriously, what does it matter to you if someone is beating on the door of the level cap while you're still doing FedEx quests in Qeynos? Does it interfer with your game play? Nope.. If you don't want to know what's ahead of you, I suggest not reading spoilers. Personally I don't want to know, my guild and I are having a blast figuring out encounters and the game as a team.

I'm only lvl 22 about to level to 23. I've been in game since Nov 9th. I'll get there soon enough. Just enjoy the ride that is Everquest. There is no end to it, that's why it's called Everquest. Once you think you can reach the carrot, SOE will move the reward just far enough out of your reach, that you'll have to keep moving forward. You were so close, yet so far away. Maybe if you keep grinding you'll finally reach the Golden Ring.

Also consider this, Beta players. These could be people who had made it far into the game during beta and now they only want to pick up from where they left off. Don't hate someone who just wants to continue his game.

I thought they deleted beta characters after the beta trial ended?

I play 30% leveling, 30% crafting, 40% questing and I think everything is moving at a reasonable rate.
#12 Dec 02 2004 at 12:07 PM Rating: Decent
They did, which means those people need to redo the first 30 or so levels and will probably want to do it quickly so they'll be back where they were.
#13 Dec 02 2004 at 12:17 PM Rating: Decent
as you can see from my sig.. I'm not leveling quickly..

honestly I've had my personal "first", on Toxxulia there's a barrel that says "Nerris was here" nifty.. but I enjoy the exploration.. what I find isn't new to a level 30+.. but it's new to me. ^_^

I don't level grind at all. I have yet to just go somewhere to get EXP. Everything I do has been for a quest. Even still I'm leveling fairly quickly (15% from 20) I'm keeping pace with most of my guild if not going faster than a number of them. Now there are the power gamers that level extremely fast and they are moving into their 30s. The biggest problem I see is the eq2players.com site focuses on firsts. So if you want to get your name on the site you have to power level to get there. The only real exception to this is number of quests completed. There are many many people that feel that have to be on the top of these lists and are rushing things to get there. I was disgusted when they posted the first to get their sub-class. That just reenforces the idea that you must level level level. My wife has a friend that is level 30 and is going on about we need to level and such. I'm a tank class and you know what from doing quests rather than leveling I have a good amount more AC than most tanks my level. He claims that drops are better than quested gear. I have yet to see a drop that is better than gear of the same quest level. There are quest items that are sub-par but there is always one quest that is better than the drops of equal level as far as I have found. So all you level grinders that want to do that have fun. I'll have a nice time going slowly and enjoying my time and getting gear that makes doing stuff around my level easier.
#15 Dec 02 2004 at 12:27 PM Rating: Decent
I think Sony has done a decent job of trying to minimalise the power gamer who just levels for the sake of being the biggest and the badest. these guys really miss alot of the involved gameplay and it shows when u group up with them in higher levels. i actually had a cleric in EQ1 around 55th lvt that i told him i couldnt succor him out on a pull gone wrong if he had divine intervention on and he asked me what that was....
EQ1 players should know that that is a cleric that isnt worth grouping with. needless to say i disbanded at the 1st opp i got w/o ******** the whole group.
but i digress....
personally i like to roleplay and explore, some like the power trip of being high level, and some spend there whole time doing low level chars on different severs for the challenge of starting from scratch etc. it takes all types in this game and we are all free to group with those we are comphy with - just be wary when you do get to higher levels as a group/guild member that doesnt know his wand or sword from his azz will get everyone killed - repetitively.
the only thing that chaps my hide is when power gamers talk down on other gamers.
Same person next morning is usually saying," hey anyone got any food? i'm out."

i was only shortly following Duna in the beginning of the level race on Antonia Bayle. I eventually took a step back and started working artisan and harvesting...and I can tell you one big reason (for me) for driving so hard.

it wasn't about being first or seeing the end, but avoiding the chaos. for the short time that i remained "ahead of the pack", it was really nice to hunt in zones that didn't have /ooc and /shout splattered with some idiot asking EVERY SINGLE STEP OF HIS/HER QUEST over and over and over.

sure, you can turn /ooc and /shout off, but then you end up missing things like that group request for the mob/mobs you are looking to take down, or some interesting /roleplaying conversation.

in my opinion, driving hard to be in a zone first just for the simple reason that you don't have to deal with half of the idiots that don't play but instead BEG their way through quests is enough satisfaction for me. Even Thundering Steppes is now being littered with idiots. Them and the madness that we call resource harvesting.

In my opinion, SOE needs to spawn more instanced versions of zones more frequently...there is nothing I hate more than being in a zone packed with schmucks, only to find out I only have one more choice of an instance to go into which is just as full of idiots.

I'm not being jaded, just realistic. I've asked a question here and there in /ooc, but its sickening when you see the same person asking "where is tower of vhalen?" then "where is flippys hill" the "where is ardent keep?", etc etc...you get the point.

I don't know why people race to get to high levels. In FFXI that's basically all there was to do besides tedious and very expensive crafting, fishing, or farming. So I'm very anti level grind as well. I like to explore. I like to do quests. I haven't crafted on this character yet...but I've got a mule I'm going to use for that to make money. I'm only lvl 19, a moderate level at this point. I want to hit Inquisitor tonight and then take a break and maybe farm some mobs for my new armor and stuff I want... but I don't feel rushed. I'm having fun taking my own time, and when I get to end game and do big raids, that'll be fun too.... and then expansions will come out and there'll be more levels and areas and quests. Maybe new jobs. I'm enjoying the ride on the way, and if I get bored of playing I log off without that burning anxiety I had in FFXI to just stay on and get to the next level and be uber.

Sad part is, I already feel more "uber" in this game than I ever did in FFXI. Partially because I can whip the tar out of solo mobs my level I think. You didn't ever get that satisfaction in FFXI after lvl 15 or so. Especially at mid and higher levels, when an Easy Prey could clean the floor with you. I think that really helps take away the burn to level, because you feel pretty tough for where you are at, and there's less of a desire to impress others because of it.

I like that aspect too. It was similar in EQ1, where if you werent a necro or druid, it was often difficult to solo. Granted ShadowKnights (as I was), if they were moderately equipped and knew how to play their class, could solo lb and db mobs all day long. Heck, I've soloed yellow mobs at lvl 62. But by the time your done with encounters like that, they just arent worth the tiny xp you got.

Right now in EQ2, yes we can mostly all solo and even or yellow (and the occasiona orange) mob, and I love it- I just hope it stays this way even up eventually into 50s and beyond.

I too leveled like crazy in those first few days. I literally hit 10 the day after launch (well, the 9th I hit 10. I was playing on the 8th) Smiley: tongue

I've since slowed down. School caught up and so did getting our guild started. Crafting also popped up, as well as exploration. Until two days ago (I think) I was the highest person in the guild. Now we have 4 level 24's and me, at 23 (which I just hit last night.)

I too am worried that the game will lose the magic for me. This is a huge game and I need to step back and experience it. Leveling is cool, but so is exploration so you don't get burnt out on said leveling.

At any rate, I've seen a few 37's on Befallen. I'm sure they'll be 40 by the end of the week (if not the end of the weekend.) To them, I say good for you. If their having fun, then so be it.

I start on 9th Nov. now Im lvl 22. if I didnt spent time on tradeskill, I think I can reach around 29 or so. since Im a bard/troubador. you can lvl even faster if you are a healer class. so I dont suprise ppl can reach lvl 40.

if you do nothing except grouping for exp. its reasonable to reach 40+ in 3 weeks. well, of couse u need to play 8-12 hours a day every day.

Lol I should be level 35ish but I restarted a level 14 Brawler, lvl 13 Summoner, and have ground to a halt on my 17 Crusader (burnt out. Need to take a day or 2 off). Rushing is kinda pointless if theirs no one at the top to share in the joy.
#23 Dec 03 2004 at 7:47 AM Rating: Decent
I'd rahter being playing with a group of people I enjoy playing with than be level 50
