Overheating Video CardFollow

#1 Dec 01 2004 at 10:37 AM Rating: Decent
Well, I have noticed alot of talk about this and I do not plan on paying anyone to work on my computer so I am wondering if the fact I am buying a new computer

P-4 2.8 before you ask =)

Will I need to actually be careful with what I buy? I know nothing of overclocking or any of that but I also do not want a Video Card that over heats too often. I want something I can do a 4-8 Hour Grind on without having to power down or reboot too often. I played EQ on an old Voodoo I believe and I probley have done up to a 10 hour grind than my brother would get on right after and I never had an "overheating" less I didnt know it. But Is it the mghz listed on the card ( 400 mghz ) that is considered the power it drains? I am wanting to make very sure that the card I end up getting is not so powerful that I have to install a nuclear reactor to run it...

And as to the fact you people are brighter than any Customer Service rep I have talked to...please...enlighten a fella?

Thanks for the info.

any geforce fx or ati radeon shouldn't overheat unless u overclock it. so as long as u don't overclock, you're fine.

Wouldn't even worry about it bud, unless you are worried about you fans not keeping up

Only suggestion I would make is make sure your fans all work, but that goes without saying for any computer these days.

I acutally have a Chaintec GeForce4 TI-4600 and had some problems with overheating when running FFXI last year. My case was fairly crowded (I need to upgrade to a larger case) and I was running it with the sides on. These are the steps I took, and I haven't had a problem since.

1. Took the sides off of my case and placed it in a well vented area. Taking the sides off makes a HUGE difference in the temperature of your case.

2. Bought this. It is a completely silent cooling system, unless you use the fan. It works beautifully! If you're really worried about it (or see problems and think that the single heat pipe will not be enough) you can get the upgraded model which includes two heat pipes (which means the heat is disapated 2x as much.)

Normally, however, the above posters are correct, and you shouldn't have to worry about heat buildup. However, if your case is not well vented or very crowded inside, it does happen.

Of course, to be completely fair, I am running an Athlon XP 2500+; and we all know how hot they get.
