Cleric+ soloability questions (vs pal?)Follow

#1 Dec 01 2004 at 2:04 AM Rating: Decent
EDIT: It's hard to keep something on track in this forum ;) ... So I've heard from some priest classes about their experiences soloing, but I haven't heard much for comparisons. I want to be a solo fighter/healer. It sounds like my best bet is between a paladin and a cleric. Which solos better and why? Has anyone even tried pal? Is it too early to ask? Also, I'm wondering about temp/inqs, because I want to know about the armor. People are saying not to worry about str, etc., but about wisdom, but I'm interested in being a *fighter*/healer. I know EQ has never been very customizable, but that won't stop me from doing what I can ;)
Does anyone know the stat bonuses for pal, or where I can find them?

Basically, how are people faring soloing as a cleric, especially relative to other classes. How about next to paladins? It seems that they might be able to fight a bit better, and still be able to heal themselves. Of course, missing out on group heals/buffs won't hurt if it's soloing.
I want to know about people's impressions of clerics, especially in fighting. How good are they with weapons? How good are they with damage spells? Should a person go for str or int? How much does heavy armor help once you go tem/inq? Does AC mitigate damage or make a char harder to hit? I know the stat increases for templars, what are they for pals? Is the paladin fighting damage really much higher than the templar's? Can the templar make up for it with spells?

If I want a self-buffing, self-healing, soloable, fighting-capable, tanking-capable character, should I go templar or paladin?

Clerics can solo VERY WELL. I solo'ed easily up to 16.5. We can take on mobs that are generally too tough for many other classes because of spells like Bestowal of Vitae, and of course just plain healing spells. Still... you have to know your spells well and your limits too.

Melee? Eh, we don't do much damage with weapons. Our best damage comes from the few damage spells we get, and some Mastery spells... and using them for chains.

STR or INT? Neither for Cleric. You want WISDOM and + Energy (mana pool)

Str is for fighter classes. Int is for mages. Wis is for Priest jobs.

I have to say that the soloability of my Fury comes not from the ultra high damage nukes or hard hitting weapons but from my regen spells. All I have to do is survive the mobs unloading their POWER bar on me and I win.

Most mobs don't do enough melee damage to really hurt anyone once their POW is depleted. Casters are the easiest since they have low armor rating and very low strength and hit in the 10's.

Nuking is just a waste of POWER and I only do it on the last mob that is low health already. I save my POWER bar for Nettleshield (you should see how much damage this baby does to groups of greens) and Regrowth. I may have to Bloom every once in a while, especially against caster mobs, but usually Regrowth is more than enough to keep me in the yellow/green.

Also, since my damage shield and regen do all the work, I am able to take on 2 groups of greens (they were around 10 mobs) and really not have any fear of dying. With groups of 10 I try to stick to melee mobs mostly.

Most of my deaths to casters (even greens) have come from Silence. Without the ability to Regrowth and Bloom as needed, I'm toast. I usually don't notice the "You can't cast" message until my life is too low and I have no way of healing. Seeing that Queue message appear under Bloom when I am in the red is already too late to run. At that point I just make sure that my shard is not within aggro range to the mobs starting spot.

Whenever I solo something I start with all my self buffs on obviously then: Debuff----DoT----Regrowth--Master Debuff (if applies) I swing my club just fo rthe minor damage and just maintain my DoT and Health regen at that point.

I can dig it Druids and Clerics are a bit tougher than they appear.

My 2 cents,

Any shaman out their that can comment on soloability? I am thinking about going shaman, but I'm not sure what their specialty in healing magic is.

I personally never bother with debuffs when soloing. I feel its wasted POW that could be better used as a regen. Besides, when you have 3-10 mobs on you, its a waste of time to try and debuff them all. I don't even debuff double up arrow ^^ blues or oranges.

I do debuff double up arrow ^^ oranges when are are taking them as a group. I guess I just don't feel that the POW and time to cast justifies the little benefit I get. Or am I just not seeing how great debuffs are? Would mobs really hit that much softer if I were to debuff them when solo? I must admit, I cast debuff while in groups so I can feel more useful to them instead of just a healing machine.

Edit: As to the Shamans, they get runes that absorb a certain amount of damage. I have heard of Shamans that can actually solo without taking any damage. This would have to beat out my regens.

Shaman is also good to solo with. I have been able to take green and blue cons with double chevrons solo. Just keep Spectral Ward on yourself and it will absorb the damage. Plus as Shaman you get some good DOT spells. It makes it easy when fighting a group, just cast some DOT's on each one. That way by the time you kill one and move on to the next mob in the group he will already be hurting. As far as armor, You will be able to wear up to medium upon becoming Shaman. Mele damage is ok, but when solo'n you will definately have to use self HO's.

priests are good to solo but you need to know how to use HOs - if not them it would be really hard for me to solo my cleric...

Wow!! Priests must be better at soloing then. My lvl 16 assasin would get hammered by a ^^orange mob.

The last part of that sentence reads "when are are taking them as a group". Change one ARE to WE. I do not fight anything above blue with chevrons (thanks TheDebo, I had forgotten the name >_<) and blues only if they are barely blues and not greens. I can take out oranges but they have to be Solo oranges (not grapes). Any group mob above blue will kill me in seconds... they just hit too hard for me to keep up with healing. I apologize if the double ARE in my sentence confused you.

I ocassionally get beat down by ^^ Green named mobs. I have taken down some solo regular yellow mobs, but I've never tried an orange.

Personally, I like to switch between solo yellows/whites and groups of green. It can be a lot of fun just slamming a group of Green mobs.

Well I think we all agree it's quite possible to solo as any Priest job, as long as you keep your head about you and know your limits. OP .... good luck ^^

I agree with Ivven. I'd say the most important thing to know is how to spam your HO effectively, and when to turn tail and run. Soloing slows down after a while. I almost got smashed by a white con wolf yesterday. Quite a shock as I had been taking yellow con solo mobs with ease up until this point. Not too shabby, though, considering I come from FFXI (and I'm not afraid to admit it) where no job can solo anything at all past level 20.
