If ye wanted to upgrade, why go for 256 MB? Why not go to the 512? MUCH better for these games...

Well Here is the answer mates: WOW...
hehe no but honestly - Upgrade is worth the money.
I used to play on custom settings, all effects(flroa water) turned off shadows as well, and character detils/textures on medium. It was smooth and all but cities were unbearable.
Then I took my friends geforce fx 128mb to see a litle improvement, but cities were still as bad as before.

Now - on 256MB geforce with slightly overclocked clock I changed the settings to - flora, water minimal, textures to high and particles and models to maxiumum !!! I didnt realize the game wasso beatiful *grins*
And cities? Well I can run through longshadow alley
(my high settings) without any lag with decent fps
(would say 15-18 but hard to guess ) I went to the bank turnedaround - no lag, so I finished my banking and went back to other part of town.
Everythign was sooo SMOOTH ;-)
Now there is only ONE thing that worries me most. Although it helped a lot and my game runs smoother?looks better, my CPU still works at around 70-80% while video card doesnt heat up too much. I hope this will change with one of the patches in the future.
Right now iwould advise anyone who can afford to spend a little bit of money to upgrade to 256mb version(even 5700 like mine) and you will see the inprovement. I cant sayanything about ATI because honestly I am not an expert but upgrading to 256mb card with cinefx 2.0 sure helps a lot !!!
Hope this helps mates, if you want me to run some additional tests/settings then let me know.
Good hunting

ack i hate it when people refer to their slow comp speed as lag =P that's not what lag is.

Could you link to the card your using? Is it self overclocked or factory overclocked?

Heya
My card is BFG Geforce fx 5700 256mb version, and yes it is factory overclocked (465mhz from 425mhz base)

Oh and regarding lag - well lag low fps makes no difference to me they both prevent me from enjoying the game ;-)

Well I just bought a new computer with an ATI Radeon 128mb X800SE PCI-Express vid card and it totally rocks. I have all settings on card maxed to quality and in game to quality and have no lag and superb picture. The Pci-Express cards are overtaking AGP such as AGP took over PCI. Of course you have to have a motherboard that has a pci-express slot.
Check it out here.

well I agree about pci Express but Iwill wait a lil longer - at least 6 months till it gets more stable and till AMD actually has full support of it ;-)

Hey guys, let it be known that the better cards usually only help smooth the game when set on a higher graphics setting.

If your jerky altogether, its probably your RAM.

I have a geforce 256MB 6800 (its pretty top of the line right now), but I can't move in the cities, and jerk around occasionally even in open areas like the Commonlands. Its all cause I don't have the RAM I need cause sitting at 512mb of RAM.

I really was hopin my card would give me a smooth game, but I'm far far from it. Gotta have the RAM too.

hi

Could anyone verify whether or not this card will let me run smoothly on a higher setting... Even Balanced setting would be great... I have to run in Extreme Performance currently due to my WAAAYYY outdated card (radeon 9000 64mb!!)

ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256mb
or
ATI Radeon 9800 256mb

Thanks ahead of time!

ATI 9600 256MB card will help you out a bit, but the video modes take a few seconds to change and when particles get a little crazy, the VPU likes to reset itself...sometimes over and over and over..

If you're going ATI, go for a 9800 or higher...stay away from the 9600 unless you're on a budget. IMO, the 9800 128MB is still better than the 9600 256MB.

nVidia is still gonna be your best bet for EQ2...sucks because it makes me feel i've wasted a bunch of money on my ATI. I absolutely hate how long it takes to switch video modes.

I don't know a whole lot about video cards at all.
How is it that ati 9800 128mb is better than the 256mb?

And as far as Nvidia goes, could anyone recommend any cards for someone on a budget? Maximum I'd spend on a new card is $250 as I have other priorites...enhancing games isn't at the top of the list when it comes to where to place my money.

Thanks!

Ok the reason why the ati 9800 128mg is better than the 9600 256mg is because of the pipelines. 9800=6pipelines 9600=4 pl. If your going to spend the money and you dont care about pcix then go with the 9800 and if you can look for the pro or xt more money but well worth it

Is that only for switching resolutions, or also for applying changes to graphics settings? I don't have the game yet, but I will be getting it over the holiday break and will also be upgrading to an ATI card - likely an X800 Pro - in order for it to be playable it on higher settings. I'm set in my decision to go with ATI, so either way it's an issue I'll have to deal with, but I was curious anyway.

Here's a language I speak...I run identical systems, i.e. same RAM, Motherboards, CPU, case, etc...only difference is the 9800 PRO 128 MB in one and the 256 MB chip in the other. Let me say that both are beautiful. I bought and returned a 6800 (regular, the $300 version), crap compared to either of these two. Basically, the 256 MB allows you to never have video card lag, i.e. Raid with 20 toons and the GPU starts to flinch at processing all the cool effects, not so with the 256, no hiccups.

that's my 2cp
