Morning everyone,

Are characters in EQ2 gaining levels as fast, slower, or faster then when EQ1 came out???

I am just curious since many servers have characters approaching the 30th level and I wondered if the same had been accomplished when EQ1 had only been out for a month!

BTW - I dinged level 10 with my Crusader last night and also and 38% away from dinging level 10 artisan (haven't talked with Ironforge yet) and, alas, have no idea which path to take.

BTW II - I love this game!

My first ever MMORPG was Everquest and I remember taking about 6 months to get to level 20. Whether that was because of the game or because of my casual way of playing I don't know. I have played EQ2 since day one, about 3 hours a day on average, soloing about 90% of the time, completing every quest I could get my hands on and am now level 18 (70% to 19) and am finding it much easier to level as I did in EQ. There seemed to be not much to do for low level characters to gain XP in EQ, but I am genuinely finding there is more than enough for any level I have been and it's always satisfying to finish off a few quests in one go and get enough XP to get that last 25% you need to DING! I am not actively trying to level but it does seem to come more naturally in this game.

I can only imagine it gets a lot harder!

Cheers

Well in EQ1 soloing was impossible with most classes soyou could say that leveling in EQ2 is actually a bit faster since you can actually do some dmg on your own ;-)

In my opinion leveling in EQ2 is alot faster than when EQ1 was first relseased.

I played Eq1 from the beginning where they didnt really give you any help with getting started what so ever. There was no in game tutorial, it was just a case of wandering around finding out things for yourself. The quest system wassnt anywhere near as user friendly as it is in EQ2.

Eq1 is also very group dependable. Only certain classes can solo effectively so you can spend a lot of time looking for a grp.

Obviously in todays EQ1 its possible to level up to lvl 10 in about 30mins with the right equipment and if you know where your going, but of course for the new player this wont be the case.

I think another factor to consider in eq2 is the overwhelming amount of people tradeskilling their hearts out for that exp rather than the adventure exp.

If you want to Level really fast, then do all the Quests you can. Even ones that seem below you. Not only will you end up with really great gear, a load of coin, you will also be leveling faster than just about anyone. Compared to grinding mobs, questing really rocks the block. Just go to a start town, talk to *everyone* and gather all the quests there. Then, go do em. When you complete a quest, be sure to talk to the NPC again to see if he/she has another one for you. By the time you have finished, you will have really nice gear, multiple Gold, and a deep, deep knowledge of the adventure side of things. If you just want to quest for the gear, check the site here for those quests. But, know that the info here is not yet complete and some of the very best gear (like the Celestial Weapon quest), is not detailed. Heck, its fun to clear a town of quests; you get to help lots of other folks too. :) Then, on to the next town. Good Hunting and Good Luck.

Side note: buy all the language primers you can find, or many quests will be hidden from you.

A caveat to quests~

If you rely on them solely to level, your grouping skills will be lacking. Heroic Opportunities are not easily understood without some practice, not to mention your defense and melee skills will be subpar at best.

Quests are the best way to grab some coin, and get some xp and gear, but don't forsake grouping. In fact, doing the xp grind is the ONLY way to get some quests (an example is the "kill 10 centaurs" quest in Thundering Steppes).

As far as levelling speed though, I think people are levelling much faster because a majority of players are EQ1 veterans. There isn't the steep learning curve like there was during the release of EQ1. Level 50 is a short goal, and I am sure an expansion is well into beta testing at this point.

Expansions are already in the offing Im certain.
But aye, leveling is much, much easier, and infinately more rewarding on EQ2 than it's dated predecessor. Largely I think, because the design team kept us solo players in mind for a change. This provides VAST improvements in game versatility and makes it a great deal more interesting. I love the idea of a quest that is begun and completed solo, but then leads to a group quest with a "mission impossible" feel to it. Sneaking into a place and doing the objective, then sneaking out again is a time tested great quest that EQ2 has maximized on. All that gives you the solo and social training to play well, and provides great experience for your toon at the same time. They really did do a great job with this.

thegreat the problem you are having is you are playing far too much at once doing the same thing.

If you don't like the grind, don't grind.

If you are playing 6 hours + at a time of course you are going to burn out in a few weeks.

Take it slow and just explore, don't grind.

what are you doing? i got my toon up too lvl 13 in no time what so ever. i have to admit it seams to take about to lvl up to 12 but once you hit 12 its easy as pie. i dont play all that much and sumthimes i am only able to play 50 min at a time. but i do alot of quests. i have 17 quests on the board right now and i have only started about 5 of them. the xp and cash and equipment from quests is the best in eny other game out there. it certenly beats the pulp about eq1. grinding is not a good idea from the start and sony knows this. i they learned that it makes alot of people leave and go play another game. so they added this awsome quest system in this new one. go to starcrest and talk to every single persaon you meet. then go to other zones and get all the quests you can till your questque is filled. and if you need equipment then look under the quest section here. they even tell you what the rewarrds are for quests.

So far I like how they have it set up!

Do quests you get; but also group and hunt in the right places.
After I got lvl 10 I got into scarecrow groups in the fields. Near the North gate to qeynos got to lvl 13 in no time. bumped up to blackburrow till lvl 16. I soloed lvl 16 doing some quests guild writs and soloing young kodiaks and fenal wolves. At lvl 17 went back to grouping in Stormhold or scarecrow field near the Stepps station till I hit lvl 19 today. I play in the morning so i get alot of downtime due to servers being down. So i get about 4 hrs a day of play time and about 6hrs on weekend days. And i've been playing since it went live.

hope this helps whomever.

Where do we buy language primers in Qeynos? And how much do they cost?

People are already past 40 now. There was a level 39 a few days ago on Najena and a 35 Guardian on Unrest..

That being said - leveling is slow in EQ2. It takes me ~10 hours to level now at 26 and I imagine it isn't much better for those other people higher than me.

These people just have a LOT of playtime. They are not casual they are hardcore and have been playing nearly 24/7 since release probably.

If I really wanted to I could get to 50 in 4 weeks like them but I don't have the patience or time to grind that hard.

Overall the levels take longer then in EQlive on release from my personal experiences with both games.

Wow - I had no idea that players were approaching 40. Only Ten levels to go and then I guess they work on Tradeskills.

I played for 2 hours last night and dinged level 11 Crusader and a level 10 Craftsman. Then a buddy came over and showed me how to connect a headset and speak with other guildmates live! That was way cool. He spends a lot more time playing but since I am 30 years old, working long hours, a wife, and a dog, etc.... Just happy to be able to log on for a few minutes a day!

Thanks for all the responses!

Those players that are at 40 now, will no doubt be the ones crying the loudest on the Sony boards about lack of content or challenge.

Why?

Because they either a) cheated or b) played for 20 hours a day in solid grinds. They didn't stop to do tradeskills, they for sure didn't stop to do quests (or they found an exploit), all they did was grind, grind, grind, and grind some more.

I truly believe that the powergamers should really run back to EQ1. EQ2 isn't about xp grinds, there is literally 1000s of quests to do. And because they cry the loudest, Sony will change EQ2 to suit their needs, and the rest of us will suffer.

i'd have to say leveling in eq2 is faster than eq.

i've got 5 toons (if you know me you arent surprised), and had no trouble at all gettin the main to 13 in a short period of time, and all but 2 of the alts over 10, and without focusing at all on "getting there." having said that, i must attribute most of that to quests, but i tend to get shiny object syndrome and talk to every npc i see (had 44 active quests at one point on one toon), and then keep killing things for a tiny bit when a quest is drop-related and i've gotten the drops. i also stop and harvest every node i run across, but dont focus on any particular aspect or the game at all.

why? because it's an rpg, and IRL i tend toward balance, not doing one thing exclusively just to advance. well ok ... everyone that knows me would say i play eq2 a *lot* but that's beside the point /grin.

let me try that again: enjoy the game, and its immersive environment, and the xp will come. try not to focus too much on making a competition out of it, or on one aspect of it solely to advance, and you'll enjoy it more :). yes, the guild system lends itself to that, but the people that are interested in that whole status thing and being all "uber" sure-as-stuffin arent having as much fun as i am :D.

even tradeskillers dont have to grind... all of my toons are enjoying visiting different zones and helping people out while looking for things to forage, but when they get bored, they switch to running errands for npcs in town, or visiting a district they havent been to *just to see what's there*.

different people play rpg's for different reasons, you just need to find your reason to play this one, if you are truly interested in hanging onto it :).

EQ2 is far more n00b friendly then EQ ever was.

First week in EQ: Barbarian, lost in Everfrost, quests that made you want to smash your keyboard into tiny peices. Oh, and don't forget having to run backwards down that stupid tunnel to Blackburrow, naked, blind, gnolls beating on you! I didn't have a breastplate until I was like level 8. Then my looser friend finally mentioned to check out Everlore for maps and quest spoilers. Mad the game a bit easier.

4 months later in April, Kunark was released. I was level 35 at that time. Several of my friends and I had just spent a month in Cazic Thule leveling from 25-35.

Forget when Velious came out, but it was several months after around July that finally hit level 60. I remember killing dorfs in Icewell Castle for Blue Ice Armor for alts and to level.

1-60 in EQ - About a year and a half. And I was among the first to hit 60 in my guild.

-----

First 2 weeks in EQ2

Refugee Isle is awesome for learning basic game mechanics. No frustration of getting lost!
Quests are enjoyable, easy directions, easy turn in at end!
Know way around city and XP zones
Level to 15+ near solo
Finding groupies upon group invite is cake!
Find NPC, is sweet.
By level 8 or 9 had nice gear for a n00b in all my slots.

In all, EQ2 is FAR better then starting in Everquest. Especially if you played old school EQ, like within the first 2 years of it's release. Just the starting on the ship and Refugee Isle is 10x better what starting in EQ1 was like.
