Video Card problems--- Radeon 9800 ProFollow

#1 Nov 30 2004 at 2:17 AM Rating: Decent
This is not a question actually but my personal experience which may help someone else who might have or be thinking of getting this particular video card.

I replaced my video card over the weekend because of issues with the one i had -- minimal ability to handle 3d rendering and bad lag in city zones. It was also a Radeon product -- a 9000 I think.

Anyway, I went out and bought the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and installed it. What an improvement! I happily started playing. About an hour later I was by the Steppes Station tower in Antonica when my game froze and went to black screen of death and then to video scruff. Needless to say, I had to restart the computer. It told me that a serious error had occurred (thanks Microsoft; I wouldn't have known without your helpful popup =P).

Next time i zoned I froze up again same results. Checked my in game options when i logged back in. Lowered everything. Same result when I was about to engage a mob in Antonica (luckily non agro).

Now I removed all video drivers and reloaded from ATI's latest for the card. Did that solve it? Nooooo....

Tried Windows XP best match driver. Nope. Went back to driver that came with card. Searched online for answers. Changed settings in the ATI panel that were supposed to help. Nope. Changed a BIOS setting (RAM cache disabled). Nope. Removed and checked card. Reinstalled. Nope.

Went to another website to find that a LOT of people have this problem with VIA chipsets / SOYO motherboards and the Radeon 9800; it may be a compatibility issue with DirectX. I gave up and removed the video card to return it.

I bought an Nvidia GeForce 6800oc today and managed to shoehorn the enormous thing into the case. Loaded the drivers; went online to EQ2. No problems with locking up in 2 hours of play. Tried zoning over and over. No problems.

I posted this as information; I have no interest or holdings in either ATI or Nvidia and make no claims as to the quality of their products.

I have an 9700 and it works just fine. Did you try replacing the existing 9800 with a new one to make sure that particular card wasn't damaged? Many people here play with a 9800 and do not have your same problem.

Since it's a problem with VIA chipsets theres a shot that it could of been outdated motherboard drivers (or whatever the Hyperion things are called :) ) too. I used to have a 9700 Pro, but never played EQ2 with it. Reguardless, the 6800 will keep you gaming for quite some time to come :) I have a 6800 GT and it's become my most favorite graphics card of all time, and I've had quite a few.

I had a similar problem with my new computer, it ended up going back to the manufactor who claimed it was a fault in the driver then in windows.

To get a Nvidia GForce 6800 did you have to buy a new power supply? I heard it takes more power than a typical powersupply can offer.

I just bought radeon 9800pro (had 7500, haha, HUGE upgrade) and it runs without too much lag on high settings and balanced runs perfect but without the sharp detail of shine on walls and water, I love the card and havnt experienced the problem you state, or any problems at all. This game looks so damn good.

I installed the card some months ago in anticipation and to be able to play FF XI, never had any problems with it then and I don't have any now. EQI did have a pop-up just before login that I needed a more recent driver, but apart from that I have had no problems in EQ II. (ram problem, yes, but luckily not with the video card)

I have the exact same card and it not only looks gorgeous, but it hasn't ever had a single problem.

If you can't solve the issue with the proper drivers, send that bugger back and get a replacement.

i have the same problem with my 9800pro on a MSI motherboard within a half hour the graphic go spotty then breaks up so bad u cant see anything if i switch to windows mode everything clears up for awhile. but after a couple hours its usually so bad i reboot sometimes helps sometimes not. i have updated all motherboard and ati drivers to no effect. i have been playing with all the bios settings so much that i think i killed it. came home today press power and nothing no lights no fans, nothing. off to the shop hope it not too dead.

Same here.

I have the 9800 Pro and not had a bit of trouble with the game running at, I'd guess, 75% to 80% of full graphics. Excellent framerate and gorgeous graphics.

Thanks for the info=).
I run a radeon 9800 pro on my comp and it has the VIA chipset on the mobo, so far in 2 months no problems, could be bad drivers or just a lemon card

9800 Pro here as well, and it works great. Could have been any number of issues, most likely related to the motherboard as others have stated.

Glad you got a card working though!

I use a Radeon 9800 Pro and it runs like a champ. I have everything set to High or Very High quality and I've never had a problem.

Dude, I had the exact same probs when i first installed my 9800 (so it sounds anyway) It turns out that i may have borked it while installing it... or it may have been a lemon card that didn't evidence itself till a little later on... anyway, sent the card in to ATI and they sent it back good as new (better). Card works awesome and what makes it work a hogillion times better is slappin some moh RAM in that sumbiatch. ATI is a good company, and stands behind it's products. Smell that? that's right, a breath of fresh air, ah ... (hear that future shop, ya, i mean you)

Try to uninstall all the drivers completely. Then re-boot in safe mode. After that go to the Windows foldr and delete all the files in it that begin with ati, should be about 7 of them. Then restart and re-install the latested drivers.

That has worked for me before when switching between two products that use the same unified drivers.

Might also be a heat issue? Try going into the bios and checking hte options like Enable fast writes and stuff like that. Shut them off just for a test.
