Technical Advice for EQ2 UpgradeFollow

#1 Nov 29 2004 at 10:32 PM Rating: Decent
Ok, 3 years of computer maintance(sp) and building my own little super computer, but I'm now hitting an area I need some advice in.

Memory.

I haven't done much with the RAM and I got a peculiar question. We all know EQ2 "recommends" a gig of Ram, but I'm lookin beyond that.

Couple questions:
1) Does more memory = faster?
Can I just get 2 gigs of regular single channel DDR ram and it'll run faster and smoother then a gig of RAM? As in...are their any limitations to the game won't run any smoother after this ammount of memory.

2) Lets say I have two 512MB of single channel DDR ram. Can I put in an additional 2 x 512MB Dual Channel Ram and still get the dual channel properties? Or do the other two mess it up?

Hope I cut enough jargon out here for someone to help me. Until I get my other stick back from warrrenty, EQ is lagging like hell for me with only 512. Would love to explore new possibilities here.

Grats on the super computer =)

I'll break down what I can remember (I always keep notes on my research for these things) BUT it's at home.

More memory = Faster?

That all depends

I personally have a gig of ram. While the game is Windowed and I’m surfing the net while in game I'm currently using 670mb of memory. Now if I needed to open up a program that required a lot of memory while playing the game I would need more memory.

I don't see it making the computer faster in this case, but more could never hurt.

Some computer manufactures only include a small amount of memory say 128mb. If you’re running Windows XP with 128mb of ram, I don’t care what you’re doing its going to run slow despite the processor you have. In that case more memory would make the computer faster. I always recommend 512mb as a base. For what were doing, oh yeah a gig is suggested.

I don’t believe you can mix Dual channel with a single channel memory. If you could the memory would only run at single channel. Also you have to buy memory in pairs with Dual channel. In my configuration (1 GB) I have 2 512 Dual Channel dimms. With single channel it doesn’t matter.

Hope that helps

Oh something I forgot two answer. Dual Channel is 5%-7% faster then single channel. If you have a P4 I would recommend it, if you’re running an AMD it doesn’t utilize the dual channel as much as a P4. I don't have the exact numbers here and I researched that in April thus the AMD comment now may be inaccurate.

My friend has pretty much the same setup as my PC with 512mb. I have 1GB we do see a diffrence in performance. Crowded zone's you can notice the diffrence greatly.

That's not to say I dont get lag tho. I have a great PC setup and 3meg connection down 384k up (very stable connection) But i've lagged out before.

Let me say one simple thing.

I had 512 MB of RAM. Things were okay.

I upgraded to a gig. EQ2 is kicking some major butt now. It's so much more of an improvement I wish I had forked over the cash for an upgrade to 2 gigs. :(

So be sure to have at least a gig of RAM, you WILL need it if you some good performance.

Dual only being 5-7% better? And possibly not even so on an AMD (which I use a AMD 3000+)? Hell, it sounds almost like I should just drop all the potential problems with trying to hook up a dual kit and just stock my channels with 512 sticks.

I'm thinking of trying to get at least 1.5 gig ram cause I multitask...alot...on this comp.
Scripting MUDs, EQ2, 2+ messenger services, and a web browser all at the same time...with hopefully being able to play in the city in EQ, thats my goal.

Right now, I just can't move when I'm in the city, no matter how much I limit my other activiites on the comp. If Dual ram is only so marginally better, it just doesn't sound worth it to me. Plus with regular DDR, I can just stock it up whenever I get the free cash.

I'd go for the 2 gigs, LOL.

With 1 Gig I run Adobe Acrobat (for the PDF version of the Prima Strat guide -- perfect for some nice maps) and Firefox with EQ2 running and I have no problems at all.

But for what your describing I'd get at least 2 gigs.

Ok little story for yall, maybe get me some sympathy here. About 2 months ago, my comp got fried when I tried to put in my GeForce 6800. I swear I've popped vid cards in an out without unpluggin the power but this time it decided to fritz the computer and the card. After all the warrenty work was back and a new motherboard was in, had a small mishap on setting up the BIOS again when I changed the FSB too high. When a friend of mine was looking at it, he accidently, not sure how, fried one of my two 512MB RAM sticks.

Ok down to 512MB now which kinda lags for EQ right? So I had this broken chip, laying around, pretty useless and just decoration. That was until I happened across the fact that Kingston offers lifetime warrenty on my memory when I was shopping for a new one. So I call them up and they say "We discontinued that brand, but we can repair it to honor our warrenty."

Well thats all fine and dandy...the problem is I get a little obsessive about chewing on things sometimes. (Don't chew on processor pins guy, it'll damn near kill you). Anything laying around I'll chew on...and since their was a nice stick of 512 memory laying around, it got chewed on, alot. Not 10 minutes before I called in for RMA work I chewed off like two chips on the stick.

Anyone wanta make some wagers if they'll be able to repair it and "honor their warrenty?"

ROFL!!!! Great story, that had me going for a bit =) So good I read is twice lol.

I agree your going to be the Ram master or Diva with all those apps running. 2GB sounds like a plan.

I did want to say when I built my pc I just ordered a gig of dual channel.

I wouldnt count out Dual Channle yet. As I said before That's from April when I researched it for my PC. I mean 5%-7% could mean a lot. As an example sound is measured in DB (Decimals) 100db compared two 102db is a great difference. This could apply here. It's getting close to the end of the day for me, i'll try to look in to that later =)

Info I found on Dual Channel.

Didn't see anyone mention it yet. I too have an AMD system, and am in the process of slowly buying ram (it's damn expensive for that ram I want...)

When you're looking for memory for an AMD system, look for something with 2-2-2 latency (the lowest you can get.) I have no idea what those numbers mean, but I've had multiple people tell me that on multiple forums.

This is the RAM I'm getting, and it runs like a dream. I'm in the process of saving up for another stick now. Supposedly the algorightm that PQI uses is miliseconds faster than even Corsair ram (yeah, it may not seem like much, but I think it's noticable...)

Anyway, not exactly what you were looking for in the way of answers, but hopefully this'll point you in the right direction for buying some nice fast ram.

$130 for one stick of 512 is a bit much in my book...could almost get two sticks of Kingston for that much.
